The object of this article is the English-language multicultural prose of the late XX – early XXI centuries. The subject is the clash of cultures. The research material is based on individual short stories by the contemporary US-Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie published in the book “The Thing Around Your Neck” (2009). The goal of this article lies in determination and analysis of the peculiarities of artistic expression and functionality of the situation of clash of cultures in the writer’s short stories. The relevance is substantiated by the following factors: 1) clash of cultures is typical for the relationships in modern multipolar world during the globalization era, this it is relevant in literary works of the XX–XXI centuries;  2) literary studies currently indicate heightened interest in covering various aspects of fictional multicultural prose; 3) Adichie is a remarkable figure in modern literary process. The short stories by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie are unique in their reference to signal trends in the development of the English-language literature, and thus are a relevant in the context of studying the designated topic. Unlike the works of multicultural writers of the second half of the XX century, which have repeatedly been the object of scientific research, the multicultural prose of the late XX – early XXI centuries is poorly studied. The scientific novelty is defined by the fact that the analysis of short stories from the collection “The Thing Around Your Neck” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, which is not translated into the Russian language, is carried out for the first time within the Russian literally studies. The conclusion is made that the situation of clash of cultures in Adichie’s stories becomes the factor that induces mental crisis in the minds of the characters. There is no constructive dialogue of cultures, and their clash leads the characters to either the loss or substitution of identity.

The article discusses the main approaches to studying the modern Russian-language PR-discourse that represents a relatively new and actively developing sphere of communication. First of all, the researchers of the Russian-language PR-discourse analyze its lexical composition. In particular, they consider the ways of adapting the English-language PR-terms that play an important role in reflecting new objects of extralinguistic reality. Moreover, the linguistic means of this type of discourse are studied from the perspective of linguistic pragmatics. The works in this area emphasize the importance of such way of speech impact as suggestion and the corresponding pragmatic methods that is determined by the manipulative character of the Russian-language PR-discourse. In the light of this peculiarity, the linguists are also interested in the process of mythologization that consists in distorting the connections between the objects of reality and is aimed at creating the positive image of the subject of PR-communication.

Introduction: the article is devoted to the topical issue of cross-cultural relations of Kola Saami literature. The subject of the analysis is the interlinear translations of the Saami poets’ works into the Russian language. Objective: to identify the equivalence of translations of the Saami authors into the Russian language in the transmission of cultural meanings, values, and ethnic psychology. Research materials: the poetic works of the Saami authors and variants of their translations. Results and novelty of the research: the article analyzes Russian-Saami literary contacts for the first time. The focus of the work is on the accuracy and peculiarities of translations of the Saami poets into the Russian language. The analysis of the material allowed us to conclude that poetic translations of the Saami authors into the Russian language do not always accurately recreate the meanings and images of the interlinear translations, which is due to the complexity of the task in translating national literature. The Russian translators saturate the text with poetic liberties; adorn it with visual and expressive means that reflect the Russian national color; include Russian proverbs, sayings and stable phrases, religious and Christian notions; use translations as an excuse to create their own poem, which, in turn, distorts the general meaning of the original, deprives it of ethnicity, and makes poetic translations of Saami interlinear translations culturally adapted, authorized, and ethnocentric.

The subject of this research is the African paremiology. The object is the history of studying proverbs in the Swahili language. The author examines the chronology of studying this field of linguistics by Western European and African scholars, cites their major works, and describes the peculiarities of their scientific views. Special attention is given to the works of the founders of African paremiology, as well as the perspective of modern scholars of Tanzania and Kenya upon the scientific heritage of proverbs and sayings of the Swahili language. The article employs the theoretical research methods, namely the comparison of theoretical works in the Swahili and English languages. The analysis of a wide range of works in the Swahili language alongside the works of certain European authors, allows reconstructing the chronology of the process of studying Swahili paroemias, as well as highlighting most prominent African and European scholars in this field of linguistics. The novelty of this research lies in the fact that this topic is viewed in the domestic African Studies for the first time; foreign linguists also did not pay deliberate attention to this question. The author’s special contribution consists in translation of the previously inaccessible materials of the African and Western European into the Russian language, which helps the linguists-Africanists in their further research.

An overview of modern domestic and foreign linguistic studies of rap texts is presented. The features of rap as part of the global hip-hop culture are considered. The proof is given that rap text as a component of rap culture is the dominant of the subculture, and domestic rap is an authentic phenomenon. It is shown that over the past twenty years, the subject of research in the field of studying Russian-language rap texts has become more diverse. The main linguistic aspects of the study of rap texts (lexicon of rappers, slangisms, intertextual inclusions, gender characteristics, paronymic attraction) are revealed. The novelty of the research is seen in the fact that the status of rap text as an object of linguistic research has been clarified, and guidelines have been created for further practical analysis of this type of text. For the first time, a number of works by foreign scientists that have not previously been presented in the domestic scientific space and which define new perspectives in the study of the Russian-language rap text are highlighted. Particular attention is paid to debatable issues about the status of rap text, its genre features. The authors of the article argue that the leading mechanism of text generation in Russian-language rap is paronymic attraction, which gives reason to consider rap text as a literary text.

The subject of this article is meaning of the work “Ocean of Reasoning : a Great Commentary on the Nāgārjuna's Mūlamadhyamakakārikā” by Je Tsongkhapa for understanding the phenomenon of Nāgārjuna, his contribution to the development of the history of Buddhism overall and Buddhist philosophy in particular, essence of the explained by hum system of Madhyamaka – middle way, free from the extremes of reification and nihilism. The author establishes that false interpretations of Mūlamadhyamakakārikā as just logical-epistemological text and a guide for polemicizing, as well as such an improper understanding of the ontology of Nāgārjuna, when the doctrine of dependent origination is proclaimed higher teaching of the Buddha, can be overcome through the commentary of Je Tsongkhapa. The novelty of this study is defined by the fact that it involves original text of Tsongkhapa, which is translated into the Russian language for the first time, as well as introduced into the discourse on national Buddhology. Due the commentary of Tsongkhapa, it is established that the doctrine of emptiness is the “heart of teaching of the Buddha”, and the argument on the dependent origination is “superior to all arguments”, as it helps to cognize emptiness as the “dependently emerging suchness”. The doctrine of dependent origination and the view of emptiness comprise a semantic unity, although they are not identical. Therefore, translation from the Tibetan language and examination of the writings of Je Tsongkhapa, namely “A Great Commentary”, are relevant and essential for reconstruction of the authentic teaching of Nāgārjuna, as well as overall comprehension of Buddhist philosophy.

In modern linguistics, a branch of linguistics - translation studies - was formed, which aims at comprehensive study of the processes of translation from one language to other languages from different aspects. Based on the material of the Russian Finno-Ugric languages, this branch of science takes its first steps. The purpose of this paper is to consider lexical and semantic language errors in the text of the translation of P.A. Sorokin's autobiography into the Komi language, identified by systematic comparisons of text fragments in English, Russian and Komi. The material of the study was the texts of P. A. Sorokin's autobiography published in separate books in different years of publication. The language errors found in the text of the translation of the autobiography of the world-famous sociologist, a native of the Komi region, Pitirim A. Sorokin into the Komi language, published as a separate book in Syktyvkar in 2013, are considered for the first time. The errors considered are analyzed on the basis of subsequent comparisons with the English-language original and the translation of the same book into Russian, published in Syktyvkar in 1991. Analysis of the Komi language of the book (the first 40 pages of his autobiography) allowed to conclude that the translation into the Komi language was made not from the language of the original, as recorded in the bibliographic description, but from the Russian translation of the autobiography, as most translation errors from the Russian-language text moved to the Komi-language one.

The object of this article is the language game in its various manifestations. The subject of this research is the proverbs and sayings of the Swahili language, in which the author attempts to trace the linguistic phenomenon. Special attention is given to various means of language game at different language levels. The goal is to determine whether it is possible to interpret the term “language game” in a broad sense, as well as the extent of application of such linguistic tool in proverbs and sayings of the Swahili language. The article explores different perspectives upon the concept of language game. Analysis is conducted on the Swahili paroemias that demonstrate different ways of language game. The survey results carried out among the native speakers of Swahili are presented. This article is the first to analyze the ways of realization of language game in proverbs and sayings of the Swahili language on the various linguistic levels. The author demonstrates the examples from the corpus of Swahili paroemias, which were translated into the Russian language for the first time. The conclusion is made that language game takes place not only in the written texts, but also in folklore, which indicates that alongside a writer or a linguist, the author of the language game can also be a native speaker. It is underlined hat versatility is also characteristic to the Swahili language paroemias.

The article is devoted to the phenomenon of manipulative mass media discourse. The results of the analysis of Kazakhstani media with verbally expressed manipulative discursive practice are presented. The research material was the Russian-language texts of opposition newspapers and information and analytical portals of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The choice of the source of factual material is due to the fact that it is in such a mass media discourse that language markers of the manipulability of the text are most pronounced. Given the generalization of the results of modern research, the concept of the manipulative nature of mass media discourse is defined. As a result of the analysis of texts from the position of cognitive-discursive and linguistic approaches, the main lexical, morphological and syntactic markers of manipulativeness are identified. For the first time, syntactic tools are described and formalized in which predicates in collocation with lexical and morphological tools form lexical and grammatical markers - statistically valid indicators of computer diagnostics of manipulativeness as a factor of a certain information threat to society. The results of the study can be theoretically and practically significant in the fields of sociology, political science, pragmatic linguistics, journalism, and information technology.

The goal of this work became the identification of similarities and differences of peripheral conceptual attributes of clemency in the English and Russian languages. The subject of this research is the semantics of English and Russian lexemes representing the notional component of the concept of clemency in the compared languages, placed in the core and on the periphery of the concept. The concept of clemency was selected due to insufficient study of its verbalization in comparative linguistics. On the materials of lexicographic sources, the author determines the composition of nuclear lexemes and their synonyms that are capable of reflecting peripheral conceptual attributes of clemency in the English and Russian languages. The scientific novelty of this research consists in the fact that it is first to establish similarities and differences of peripheral conceptual attributes of clemency in the English and Russian languages. It is determined that core of the concept in English language is binominal and represented by the lexemes clemency and pardon; while in Russian language it is monomial. In conclusion, the author reveals that on the periphery of the concept in question in the English language are the lexemes grace, oblivion, allowance, indulgence, leniency, which are the synonyms of nuclear lexemes; and in the Russian language, there are  fewer synonyms of nuclear lexeme – apology, mercy, grace, remission. Comparison of the composition of peripheral conceptual attributes of clemency in the English and Russian languages demonstrated that they differ for the most part. Thus, the peripheral conceptual attributes of clemency in the English language is the comprehension of forgiveness as leniency with regards to a human being who committed the transgression, as a punishment, but in mitigated form. In the Russian language, the understanding of forgiveness as condescension to the transgression and aiding the one who transgressed.

The analysis of material presented in the media discourse demonstrates significant changes in the intentionality of the journalistic text, which are reflected in establishing contacts so as to grab and retain the reader's attention. This feature of modern media text is represented in changing genre preferences, speech tactics and strategies, and, consequently, selecting and combining linguistic means. One of the manifestations of this trend is the phenomenon of clickbait, which is a communicative act of promising to continue communication. This article is dedicated to the clickbait with the semantics of comicality. The collected from the Russian-language Internet research material includes clickbait headings that promise a certain funny content. The study revealed that a clickbait model includes the following semantic components: a stimulating utterance of the subject of speech seeking to involve the reader in the humorous nature of hypertext; the verbal and non-verbal markers of the object of laughter; markers, which reflect Internet user's involvement in the communicative act. The analysis of relationship between the components of a clickbait model resulted in specifying four types of clickbait headlines: 1) narrative headlines, which invite the reader to laugh what some other readers have already laughed at; 2) offering headlines suggesting some comic entertainment; 3) allusive clickbaits that hint on the possibility to continue amusing reading; 4) nominative clickbaits, which name the expected laughing reaction to the presentation of some objects.
