Objectives: Maxillary impacted canines have an important place in orthodontics for the reason of being a common anomaly and its treatment is time consuming and difficult. The aim of this study was to investigate the mandibular indexes and cephalometric parameters in adolescents with impacted maxillary canines. Materials and Methods: The radiographs of 4026 patients aged 12–19 years old were scanned and a total of 155 patients were included in the study. Subjects were divided into three groups according to the permanent maxillary canines: Bilateral impacted canine (BIC) (52 subjects; mean age 15.02 ± 1.74 years), unilaterally impacted canine (UIC) (51 subjects; mean age 14.89 ± 1.39 years), and the control (52 subjects; mean age 14.84 ± 1.65 years) groups. Skeletal, soft tissue and dental measurements were performed on cephalometric radiographs. Mandibular index analyzes including the panoramic mandibular index (PMI), mental index (MI), antegonial index (AI), and gonial index (GI) measurements and also angular measurements of impacted maxillary canines were performed on panoramic radiographs. Data were analyzed statistically and P < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Maxillary skeletal and dental measurements showed retrusive positioned maxillary dental arch in the sagittal direction in the impacted canine groups (P < 0.05). PMI and MI values were greater in the BIC and UIC groups than in control group (P < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in AI value among groups (P < 0.05). GI value of BIC group was found statistically lower than other groups (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Individuals with impacted maxillary canines have more retrusive maxillary dental arch and soft-tissue components. Furthermore, mandibular cortex was thicker in subjects with impacted maxillary canine than individuals with not and clinicians should keep in mind this when examine the panoramic radiographs in terms of early diagnosis of impacted maxillary canine teeth.

AbstractObjectivesObjective of the study is to investigate whether Soft tissue mobilization (STM) can assist with static stretching to improve hamstring flexibly.MethodsThe design of the study was repeated measure design. The study was conducted at the physical therapy laboratory of Jamia Hamdard University, New Delhi. Participants included 78 healthy males with hamstring tightness, randomly assigned to either the control group (static stretching) or the experimental group (STM and static stretching). The experimental group received five sets of four different STM techniques, followed by two sets of 30-s static stretches 3 days per week over the course of 12 weeks. The control group received 5 min of sham ultrasound with an inactive probe prior to static stretching. Active knee extension test (AKE) was the outcome measure.ResultsBoth groups showed significant improvement in AKE compared with the baseline measurements. With ingroup analysis showed a significant difference in AKE across all measured time periods (weeks 4, 8, and 12) with pre-test in both groups (p<0.05). No significant difference in AKE improvement was found between groups (p>0.05).ConclusionThe results of this study show that STM prior to static stretching does not significantly improve hamstring flexibility among healthy individuals. Although this study cannot be generalized, the results may be useful for evidence-based practice in the management of hamstring tightness.

Objectives: Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) provide a long-lasting anti-acidic effect by inhibiting the proton pump, and they are one of the most commonly prescribed drugs worldwide. PPIs adversely affect the bone structure via deficiency of vitamins and minerals. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible PPI-induced bone changes in the mandible on panoramic radiographs with the methods of fractal analysis and panoramic morphometric indices. Methods: Panoramic radiographs of 402 patients were used (201 PPI users, 201 control group). Fractal analysis was performed on 4 regions of interests (ROI): 1- upper part of the ramus, 2- angulus, 3- anterior of the mental foramen, 4- distal of the middle ramus. Also, the panoramic mandibular index (PMI), mandibular cortical width (MCW), and Klemetti index (KI) were performed on radiographs. Results: There were significant differences in terms of ROI3, MCW, and KI between the control and study groups (p < 0.05) while there was no significant difference for ROI1, ROI2, ROI4, and PMI (p > 0.05). Males were severely affected than females. Conclusions: Osteoporotic changes were detected in the trabecular and cortical bone in the mental foramen region in PPI users with fractal analysis and morphometric indices, while there were no differences for mandibular ramus and angulus regions according to fractal analysis.

Abstract Objective: To analyze the prevalence, distribution, clinical features, and relationship with dental anomalies of maxillary canine impaction. Materials and Methods: The complete pretreatment records of 1674 orthodontic patients were examined. Subjects with maxillary impacted canines were divided into two study groups: a palatally displaced canine (PDC) group (114 patients) and a buccally displaced canine (BDC) group (37 patients). These were compared to a control group of 151 patients who were randomly selected from the initial sample without maxillary canine impaction. The significance of associations between canine impaction and dental and clinical features and anomalies was examined with the chi-square test. Results: PDC patients presented with normal overjet and facial profile and a lower degree of dental arch crowding in comparison to the control patients. PDC patients showed a higher prevalence of impaction of other teeth, dental aplasia, transposition, and peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisors (odds ratios 3.3, 2.6, 8.3, and 5.8, respectively). Conclusion: PDC was frequently the only orthodontic problem of patients. BDC group patients did not present with notable differences in clinical and dental features or dental anomalies compared to control subjects.

The effect of implantation of poly-(L-lactic) acid membranes after palatal surgery on dentoalveolar development was investigated. Beagle dogs were randomly assigned to four experimental groups and a control group. In the experimental groups, a soft tissue defect was created in the medial region of the palate by excising a standardized elliptical mucoperlosteal flap at 12 weeks of age. This defect was closed according to the Von Langen beck technique, leaving two areas of denuded bone. Poly-(L-lactic) acid membranes were implanted on the denuded bony areas either directly or 3 weeks after surgery. Group L and LS served as sham groups. Dental casts were made at regular intervals until 25 weeks of age, and maxillary arch dimensions were studied. Dental arch dimensions in the deciduous dentition of the experimental groups were not markedly disturbed, but after transition of teeth, mainly transversal maxillary arch dimensions in the premolar region were reduced. It was concluded that implantation of poly-(L-lactic) acid membranes after palatal surgery in Beagle dogs did not prevent iatrogenic disturbances of dentoalveolar development under conditions used in this study.

ABSTRACT Objective: Evaluating the development of the permanent cuspids in children from Paraíba with cleft lip and palate applying the Nolla and the Demirjian methods. Methods: A cross-sectional study using an inductive approach and applying a comparative statistical procedure and direct documentation research technique. The universe of the study consisted of children assisted at the orthodontic practice of the Brazilian Association of Dentistry - Paraíba Section. The sample comprised 72 pairs of panoramic radiographs of children with and without cleft lip and palate from the same gender and, age difference of up to 30 days, ranging from 5 to 13 years of age. The study has evaluated the development of 576 cuspids. The images were evaluated by three duly calibrated examiners concomitantly, and the calcification stages were determined by a consensus. The stages of the cuspids calcification were evaluated in the panoramic radiographs according to Nolla and Demirjian classifications. Results: The average of the calcification stage of teeth was correspondingly higher in the control group than in the case group, showing a development delay of the cuspid teeth in the cleft lip and palate patients. The lower cuspids were significantly more developed than the upper cuspids (p <0.001). There were no significant differences between the sides. There was early tooth development in females but without significant difference. Conclusion: It was possible to note that patients with cleft lip and palate presented a delay in the development of the permanent cuspids when compared to non-cleft lip and palate patients, thus, reinforcing the importance of the individualization of the orthodontic planning.

Background: Recovery of dental arch defects, related to insertion of a foreign bodies into the oral cavity, and the impact of mechanical pressure, allergic-toxic effects, and the related inflammatory and degenerative processes is one of the most urgent problems in dentistry.The purpose of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of Georgian bean extract tincture as mouthwash for patients using a lever system to correct deformities of the jaw and teeth.Methods: Twenty-eight patients (aged 12-25 years) with deformities of the jaw and teeth were studied. Patients were examined 6-8 months after the bracket system was installed, and before and after the use of tincture mouthwash for 10 days. Patients were randomly divided into 2 groups: the control group for the mouthwash used standard tincture ("Octenidol" Schulke and Mayr -Germany); the patients of the experimental group used tincture made from the Georgian legume crop extracts (GLCE). Before and after the use of both types of tincture, the data were taken for calculation of Schiller Pisarev's test (SPT), Papillary-Marginal Alveolar (PMA) index, and the oral hygiene index (OHI). Saliva was collected in a glass tube without stimulation, on an empty stomach. The content of cytokines IL-1β, IL-10 in saliva was determined by the ELISA kit.Results: The study demonstrated significant positive clinical efficacy of the mouthwash tincture prepared from the GLCE which increases the resistance of dental tissue. This was revealed by significantly lower values of OHI, PMA index, SPT and increased content of IL-10 in saliva.This data indicates that tincture prepared from the Georgian legume crop extracts, which is designed to increase the stability of oral tissue, does promote an increase in resistance to the aggressive mechanical pressing.Conclusion: Tincture from the GLCE is characterized by a much stronger anti-inflammatory effect than standard tincture "Octenidol" (Schulke and Mayr -Germany) used against inflammation of the oral cavity soft tissue. This allows us to recommend the tincture from the GLCE for the treatment and prevention of inflammatory processes in the oral cavity soft tissue.Keywords: Georgian legumes crop extracts (GLCE), oral cavity soft tissue inflammation, Hygiene Index, PMA index, Schiller Pisarev's test.

ABSTRACTObjectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the short-term dentoalveolar and soft tissue changes in late adolescent patients treated with the ForsusTM FRD. Methods: A prospective study was carried out on 54 lateral cephalometric radiograms that were taken before placement and after removal of the appliance in the treatment group (15 subjects) and at the beginning and six months after in the control group (12 subjects). The patient selection criteria were as follows: skeletal and dental Class II malocclusion due to retrognatic mandible, normal or low-angle growth pattern, post-peak growth period, no extracted or congenitally missing permanent teeth, and minimum crowding in the lower dental arch. Results: The statistical assesment of the data suggested the following results: No sagital and vertical skeletal changes were induced. The mandibular incisors were protruded and intruded, while the maxillary incisors were retruded and extruded. The occlusal plane was rotated in clockwise direction as a result of these dentoalveolar changes. Overbite and overjet were reduced in all patients. Soft tissue profile slightly improved. Conclusions: The results revealed that, in late-adolescent patients ForsusTM FRD corrected Class II discrepancies through maxillary and mandibular dentoalveolar changes. (Eur J Dent 2011;5:423-432)

ABSTRACTObjectives: High intake of fluoride (>1.5 mg/L) for a prolonged period may lead to skeletal fluorosis as well as dental fluorosis. The aim of this study was to compare the craniofacial characteristics of children with dental fluorosis in early permanent dentition period to those without fluorosis.Methods: Two hundred and sixteen children in early permanent dentition (girls:121, boys:95) were included in the study. Study group was composed of 124 children with dental fluorosis who was born and grew up in Isparta (girls:75, boys:49) whereas control group of children (n=92: 46 girls and 46 boys) had no dental fluorosis. Dental fluorosis was classified using Thylstrup Fejerskov Fluorosis Index. Radiological evaluation was performed by cephalometric tracing using Björk analysis. Statistical evaluation in between study and control groups was done by Independent Samples T test and comparison with Björk’s standards was done by One Sample T test analysis. The association between two quantitative variables was evaluated with Pearson’s correlation coefficient (rho).Results: The mean dental fluorosis level was 4.6±1.8 for children with fluorosis. Systemic fluorosis affect girls no different than boys in the early permanent dentition period because none of the angular measurements show significant difference between boys and girls in the fluoridated group. Comparison of craniofacial angular values of boys with fluorosis show greater diversity compared to boys without fluorosis against Björk’s mean values for boys.Conclusions: Craniofacial morphology of children with fluorosis did not show great diversity than the ones without fluorosis in the early permanent dentition period. None of the angular measurements were significantly different between boys and girls in the fluoridated group which might imply that systemic fluorosis did not show gender difference in the early permanent dentition. Objective: To establish soft tissue facial profile norms for Coastal Andhra population by means of angular measurements and toevaluate the difference between male & female groups.Materials & Method: 90 individuals (45 males, 45 females) of age group 18-25 years of native coastal Andhra Pradesh, withacceptable pleasing profile, normal Class I occlusion having ideal anterior bite were selected for the study. Standard profilephotographs were taken and angular photogrammetric analysis was carried out through AutoCAD software.Result: There were significant difference in Naso-frontal angle (G–N–Nd; males: 130.64 ± 6.27o; females: 140.33o ± 6.85o; P = 0.000)and Mento-labial angle (Li–Sm–Pg: females: 127.38o ± 5.35o; males: 124.82o ± 6.57o; P = 0.043).Conclusion: The males of Coastal Andhra Pradesh have mild convex profile and prominent nose whereas females have mildconvex profile due to recessive chin. Abstract Background Protection of the palatal wound is an essential step following harvesting a palatal soft tissue graft. The aim of the current pilot randomized clinical study was to assess the efficacy of using propylene mesh as protective sheet when compared to conventional custom made acrylic stent after harvesting a palatal graft. The primary outcome of this study was bleeding postoperatively and secondary outcomes were pain, healing profile of the donor site as well as patient satisfaction. Methods Between 2018 and 2019 we conducted a prospective randomized controlled trial of 24 patients with palatal defects. Two groups of 12 patients with 24 sites were included in this study and were treated with soft tissue grafting technique using free grafts harvested from the hard palate. The palatal wounds were protected with propylene mesh (test group) or custom-made acrylic palatal stent (control group). Participants were assessed for the amount and duration of bleeding, pain duration, and the risk of infection 2, 4, 6, 8, 14 days post-operatively. The trial had been registered in clinical trials.gov (NCT04348279). Results Four sites were excluded from the study as dropouts. The polypropylene mesh was more effective at reducing bleeding by (2.4 ± 1.075) and pain by (1.600 ± 0.516), while the custom-made acrylic stent reduced the bleeding (5.8 ± 1.22) and pain (7.100 ± 0.316). The decline in amount of bleeding amount (P value = 0.021) and its duration (P value = 0.001) achieved by the propylene mesh was statistically significant. There was no statistical significant difference in patient satisfaction and the duration of healing process between the 2 groups. However, the healing profile of the test group was statistically significant when compared with the control group (P value = 0.002). Conclusions Propylene mesh is a promising material for protection of the palatal wound due to its light weight, limited bacterial wicking, tissue compatibility. Further studies are required to adequally assess the benefits of this material in periodontal plastic surgeries.
