<p>The electroanalytical field has exploited great advantages in using paper-based substrates, even if the word “paper” might be general. In fact, the mainly adopted paper-based substrates are often chromatographic and office ones. They are characterized by main features (and drawbacks): chromatographic paper is well-established for storing reagents/treating samples but the sensitivity compared to traditional screen-printed is lower (due to porosity), while office paper represents a sustainable alternative to plastic (with similar sensitivity) but its porosity is not enough to load reagents. To overcome the limitations that might arise due to the adoption of a type of individual paper-based substrate, herein we describe for the first time, the development of a 2D merged paper-based devices for electrochemical copper ions detection in serum. In this work we report a novel configuration to produce an integrated all-in-one electrochemical device, in which no additional working media has to be added by the end user and the sensitivity can be tuned by rapid pre-concentration on porous paper, with the advantage of making the platform adaptable to real matrix scenario. The novel architecture has been obtained by combining office paper to screen-print a sustainable and robust electrochemical strip, the printed electrochemical strips and chromatographic one to 1) store the reagents, 2) collect real sample and 3) pre-concentrate the analyte of interest. The novel sensing platform has allowed to obtain a detection limit for copper ions down to 5 ppb in all the solutions that have been interrogated, namely standard solution and serum, and a repeatability of ca. 10% has been obtained.</p>

Utilizing the novel User Interface (UI) technology of Augmented Reality (AR) in mobile phones provides significant advantages for Location Based Social Networks (LBSN) via powerful UI that allows the user to see the world through AR view rather than via a traditional map view. Compared to use of a map based interface, it is much easier for the user to understand where the nearby friends and points of interests are located when using a mobile AR interface to access the information of LBSN services. Recent development in the commercially available high end mobile phones has made it a viable device to use globally available AR services, but there still exist some limitations when it comes to LBSN services. Especially demanding is the need to include constantly moving friends reliably and accurately as annotated objects into the AR view of a user. In this article we show for the first time that mobile phones can be utilized to create mobile AR based LBSN services and create an experimental system to validate this. We present the most important use cases of the mobile AR based LBSN services, define the key requirements for the system, and analyze how the current high end mobile phones meet these. We point out the main challenges in position and orientation accuracy, data transfer and power consumption, as well as solutions to improve these. We present results from end-user studies and our experimental system we have created to study mobile AR interface for the LBSN services, and conclude that the mobile phones can be used for creation of these services when the key challenges are resolved

Initially, Oliver Twist (1839) might seem representative of the archetypal male social plot, following an orphan and finding him a place by discovering the father and settling the boy within his inheritance. But Agnes Fleming haunts this narrative, undoing its neat, linear transmission. This reconsideration of maternal inheritance and plot in the novel occurs against the backdrop of legal and social change. I extend the critical consideration of the novel's relationship to the New Poor Law by thinking about its reflection on the bastardy clauses. And here, of course, is where the mother enters. Under the bastardy clauses, the responsibility for economic maintenance of bastard children was, for the first time, legally assigned to the mother, relieving the father of any and all obligation. Oliver Twist manages to critique the bastardy clauses for their release of the father, while simultaneously embracing the placement of the mother at the head of the family line. Both Oliver and the novel thus suggest that it is the mother's story that matters, her name through which we find our own. And by containing both plots – that of the father and the mother – Oliver Twist reveals the violence implicit in traditional modes of inheritance in the novel and under the law.

Abstract Optical beam induced resistance change (OBIRCH) is a very well-adapted technique for static fault isolation in the semiconductor industry. Novel low current OBIRCH amplifier is used to facilitate safe test condition requirements for advanced nodes. This paper shows the differences between the earlier and novel generation OBIRCH amplifiers. Ring oscillator high standby leakage samples are analyzed using the novel generation amplifier. High signal to noise ratio at applied low bias and current levels on device under test are shown on various samples. Further, a metric to demonstrate the SNR to device performance is also discussed. OBIRCH analysis is performed on all the three samples for nanoprobing of, and physical characterization on, the leakage. The resulting spots were calibrated and classified. It is noted that the calibration metric can be successfully used for the first time to estimate the relative threshold voltage of individual transistors in advanced process nodes.

The chapter looks at the division between poetry and prose in ancient and other literatures, and shows the importance of rhythmic patterning in ancient prose. The development of rhythmic prose in Greek and Latin is sketched, the system explained and illustrated (from Latin). It is firmly established, for the first time, which of the main Greek non-Christian authors 31 BC–AD 300 write rhythmically. The method takes a substantial sample of random sentence-endings (usually 400) from each of a large number of Imperial authors; it compares that sample with one sample of the same size (400) drawn randomly from a range of authors earlier than the invention of this rhythmic system. A particular sort of X2-test is applied. Many Imperial authors, it emerges, write rhythmically; many do not. The genres most likely to offer rhythmic writing are, unexpectedly, narrative: historiography and the novel.

We previously constructed a Saccharomyces cerevisiae carotenoid producer BL03-D-4 which produced much more carotenoid in YPM (modified YPD) media than YPD media. In this study, the impacts of nutritional components on carotenoid accumulation of BL03-D-4 were investigated. When using YPM media, the carotenoid yield was increased 10-fold compared to using the YPD media. To elucidate the hidden mechanism, a transcriptome analysis was performed and showed that 464 genes changed significantly in YPM media. Furthermore, inspired by the differential gene expression analysis which indicated that ADY2, HES1, and CUP1 showed the most remarkable changes, we found that the improvement of carotenoid accumulation in YPM media was mainly due to the copper ions, since supplementation of 0.08 mM CuSO4 in YPD media could increase carotenoid yield 9.2-fold. Reverse engineering of target genes was performed and carotenoid yield could be increased 6.4-fold in YPD media through overexpression of ACE1. The present study revealed for the first time the prominent promotion of carotenoid yield by copper ions in engineered S. cerevisiae and provided a new target ACE1 for genetic engineering of S. cerevisiae for the bioproduction of carotenoids.

The paper presents the novel HF-GEN method for determining the characteristics of Electrical Appliance (EA) operating in the end-user environment. The method includes a measurement system that uses a pulse signal generator to improve the quality of EA identification. Its structure and the principles of operation are presented. A method for determining the characteristics of the current signals’ transients using the cross-correlation is described. Its result is the appliance signature with a set of features characterizing its state of operation. The quality of the obtained signature is evaluated in the standard classification task with the aim of identifying the particular appliance’s state based on the analysis of features by three independent algorithms. Experimental results for 15 EAs categories show the usefulness of the proposed approach.

Chemical investigations of Cadlinaluteomarginata skin extracts, egg masses, and dietary sponges have led to the identification of the novel terpenoids cadlinaldehyde (30), spongian 32, seco-spongian 35, 20-acetoxy-12-marginatone (38), and lutenolide (39) from the nudibranch skin extracts, the new drimane sesquiterpenoid 1α,2α-diacetoxyalbicanyl acetate (40) from the nudibranch's egg mass, and the new sesquiterpenoids O-methyl-9-oxofurodysininlactone (47), 2-oxomicro-cionin-2-lactone (48), and O-methyl-2-oxomicrocionin-2-lactone (49), from the dietary sponge Pleraplysilla sp. The known terpenoids furodysinin (1), furodysin (16), marginatafuran (21), and 9,11-dihydrogracillin A (37), which have been frequently isolated from C. luteomarginata skin extracts, were found for the first time in extracts of the dietary sponges Pleraplysilla sp. and Aplysilla sp. One of the new terpenoids, cadlinaldehyde (30), has an unprecedented degraded sesterterpenoid skeleton. Keywords: nudibranch, sponge, terpenoids, structure elucidation.

ABSTRACT A presumptive chromosomal cephalosporinase (pI, 9.0) from a clinical strain of Acinetobacter genomic species 3 (AG3) is reported. The nucleotide sequence of this β-lactamase shows for the first time the gene encoding an AmpC enzyme in AG3. In addition, the biochemical properties of the novel AG3 AmpC β-lactamase are reported
