The article aims at reconstructing philosophical ethics developed by Moritz Schlick and at outlining its relation to temporality. We analyze in greater detail Schlick's last work 'Problems Of Ethics', in which he addresses the problems of philosophical reflection on morality. We place Schlick's work into the historical context of the early twentieth century, which can be characterized by an increased interest in values because the 'old' values were dismantled by world war and major social transformations. Human life and its meaning required renewed forms of orientation and meaning in «liquid modernity». In this respect Schlick's ethical reflection originates in the Zeitgeist with its search for new meaning of human life. For Schlick, the key question is why human beings act morally. To answer this question, Schlick investigates central concepts of ethics from the perspective of human activity. He also distinguishes his ethics of the good which relies on human nature, from the rationalistic ethics of duty, which, in his view, causes but alienation from life. Morality does not have to hinge on selfabnegation, while true virtue can be based on pleasure principle and remain independent from social pressures. Virtue can evolve from human free will and involve both reason and feelings. Thus, we argue that Schlick's heightened sensitivity to the spirit of the times with its need to reimagine the foundations of our culture shaped his approach to and his main concerns in ethical reflection, which embraced both the ways we can know the world and the ways we should live and act in it.

ABSTRACTJung’sAnswer to Jobwas one of the most allusive, and yet elusive, texts he ever wrote. This article offers an interpretation of what Jung was intending to accomplish in writing this strange book. It places it in historical context in the aftermath of World War II, a time of widespread public shock at the Holocaust and fear of imminent global destruction. By outlining some notable theories about the nature of myth, the true significance of Jung’s achievement can be better understood. In this regard the insightful concepts of the Italian philosopher, Giambattista Vico, are particularly helpful. The myth that almost immediately began to grow up surrounding the writing of the book and its controversial public reception is also discussed.

In this essay, we debate the image of the Roman Empire represented in films produced by mainstream Hollywood cinema, whose Jewish-Christian ideological matrix placed Rome as the image of evil instead of an excellent idea in the North American version. In contrast, we will analyze Fellini's film Satyricon, which, distanced from the conventions of the historical film produced during the Cold War, created a dreamlike image of Rome and its Empire. Secondly, we will see the historical context of Petronius' work situated at the end of the reign of Emperor Nero. At the time, diversified sexuality presented man's power as a phallic power, which penetrates and rapes as a supremacy strategy. The Emperor is an actor-governor employing wiles and violence to reach the throne and maintain himself there. Petronius portrays the emergence of a new female sensuality whose morals oscillated between Vestal's virginal purity, the wife's pudititas, and sexual bestiality. At the same time, Fellini's film recreates the cultural environment of the classical world shaped by literature and the image of the city of Rome as Cosmopolis or Anthopolis. The ambiguous characters move freely and incessantly through the corners of the Roman Empire. The struggle for power and the representations of pagan religiosity show human beings surrendered to their cunning as a strategy for survival and overcoming existential evils. In conclusion, we will see that both works, Petronius' Satyrica and Fellini's Satyricon, present themselves with their independent and intertwined narratives, composing the account of a journey like the Odyssey, metaphor of the incompleteness of human life and the impermanence of the sexual pleasure and the transience of power.

The Department of Old Testament at the Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria, has been in existence since 1938 and this article is an attempt to highlight some aspects of its history. The article consists of two main sections. The first discusses the place of the Department in the world, in Africa and at the University. It is stated that the Department always moved with the times and re-invented itself in new contexts. It found a stronghold in the university context, addressed the problems of our times intellectually and consistently maintained international contacts. In the second section, the members of the Department are discussed individually. It will become clear that there is a strange mixture of synchrony and diachrony, of reading the text in its final form and of taking the historical context and growth seriously. Both approaches exist alongside each other and complement each other. It is concluded that the Departments future lies in its scholarly past in the intellectual traditions in which it is embedded, and in its ability to adapt to new contexts without losing its total devotion to critical scholarship, the students and the church.Like human beings, a university department can also have a biography. It has a life entrenched in real experiences and is subjected to the same socio-political realities as people. This article briefly tells the life story of one such department, that of the Department of Old Testament at the University of Pretoria. It describes the Departments academic endeavours, and of the scholars who devoted their lives to the pursuit of Old Testament scholarship and the teaching of theological students from their first year to doctorate level. Over the years the Department had to adjust and re-adjust, but in the end it survived all kinds of pressures and established its place both here and abroad. One of the reasons for its endurance and survival has been the commitment of the members of the Department to cutting-edge research, sound scholarship and excellent teaching. This story is told here by focusing on the physical contexts in which the Department had to exist, and then on the scholars who made things happen.

O elemento norteador é sempre a busca do bem integral do ser humano.Abstract: New technologies are mapping the genetic code and thus deciphering the information contained in the human DNA. With the emergence of a new therapeutic concept, biomedicine finds itself in the face of new paradigms. Bioethics, in its turn, is given a prominent role in this vast field, as it sets in motion the ethical reflection about life; defines protective limits that seek to guard human beings against difrent — and even threatening — detours; and it points to die fundamental need to act in the service of the welfare of Mankind. The Christian contribution bases itself on the incomparable value of human life to welcome the benefits of the new biotechnologies but also to prevent extrapolations in their application. Here, our North is, always, the good of the whole human being.

Human dignity has become a major moral directive in the contemporary ethical reflection on human rights and bio-ethics. This article examines the theological foundations laid by the reformer Calvin regarding the inherent dignity of people, and his influence on post-World War ethical reflection about the violations of human rights. In this article his views on the “imago dei” and common grace, the “lex naturae” and the obligations of the civil authority are investigated in order to illuminate his ideas about the dignity of human beings. The article then deals with the influence of these ideas in the influential works of the twentieth century’s reformed theologians Barth, Berkhouwer and Moltmann.

Nguyen Binh Khiem (1491 - 1585), a great thinker of Vietnam in the sixteenth century, contributed to the history of Vietnamese thought with many valuable ideas, including the “leisure” viewpoint. The thought “leisure” was originated from Vietnamese social characteristics in the the sixteenth century and inherited values in the traditions of national culture and the quintessence of human culture, especially under the profound and clear inuence of ideology on human life of Taoism and Lao-tzu. Nguyen Binh Khiem proposed a very profound and idyllic “leisure” viewpoint to deal with the uctuations of social history at that time through two issues, namely the thought on the category “leisure” and the content of the category “leisure” through human beings' relations with nature and dealing with themselves. His “leisure” viewpoint, due to objective and subjective circumstances, could not overcome the limitations of the times. However, in the current historical and social conditions, if we know how to inherit the values and overcome limitations, the “leisure” viewpoint still has modern meanings.
