Food and Health, previously referred to as Home Economics, is a mandatory school subject in Norway. It has the unique advantage of giving all students, regardless of their social background, practical skills and knowledge, life skills that are important for their future health. In the LifeLab Food and Health project, we have developed a research-based and innovative teaching programme and evaluated how it is perceived in a school setting in Norway. This teaching programme is for use in Food and Health teacher education, but also in the education of primary and lower secondary school students in the same subject. LifeLab Food and Health consists of learning tasks in which students in the sixth and ninth grades in school gain first-hand knowledge and an understanding of life skills that are important to manage everyday life. In this paper, we present the learning activities developed and how the students experienced them. Examples of such learning tasks are tasks revealing the science behind dietary guidelines and the promotion of a healthy diet through student active tasks. Our aim is to establish LifeLab Food and Health as a “best practice” within master’s education in Home Economics at the University of Agder in Norway.

Abstract Objectives To evaluate a monthly, modular delivery system for nutrition information in an elementary school setting. Methods A quazi- experimental design was used to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of a nutritional and activity intervention- Build Healthy Kids® in an elementary school in Guilford CT. All 330 students received a monthly newsletter in their backpacks with a specific theme, and 100 students and parents signed consent forms to take part in the study. At the beginning and end of each month, students were asked about nutrition knowledge, attitude and behavior pertaining to that month's theme (fruit, vegetable, whole grain for example). Parents were also asked about their knowledge, attitude and ease of their child making a dietary change. A two-tailed paired T-test was used to assess change. Results Student's knowledge of sodium, fruit, calcium, protein, sugary drinks, treats, vegetables, and healthy fat improved during the month when the topic was presented, whereas their knowledge of grains stayed the same (Table 1). Their reported behavior of intake of fruit improved (P < 0.05). Parents reported their child improved intake of calcium, protein, grains, treats, vegetables, and healthy fats, and the parent's knowledge of sodium, calcium, grains, and healthful fats improved before and after each monthly module (Table 2) Conclusions Breaking up dietary guidelines into discrete modules - fruit, vegetables, whole grains, sodium, treats, calcium, sweetened beverages, protein, and healthy fats improves parents and elementary school students knowledge, and student's behavior regarding healthy food choices. The study was designed to explore the effect of concept mapping as an innovative teaching method on senior school students‟ interest in chemistry. The pre -test post- test quasi experimental design was adopted for the study. The population for the study comprised 1425 senior secondary two (SS2) chemistry students in Agbani Education Zone. A total of 189 SS2 chemistry students were drawn from three secondary schools selected in the zone through purposive sampling method. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. In each of the schools used for the study, all the chemistry students in their intact classes were used. The experimental group was taught using concept mapping while the control group was taught using the lecture method of teaching. The treatment lasted for six weeks. The instrument for data collection was Chemistry Interest Scale (CIS). The CIS was validated by three experts. Before the treatment commenced, a pre- interest scale was administered and a reliability coefficient of 0.72 was established using Cronbach Alpha. The data collected was analyzed using analysis of co variance (ANCOVA). The result of the data analysis showed that there is a significant difference between the mean interest scores of students taught chemistry with concept mapping and those taught with lecture method. The study concludes by recommending that concept mapping method of teaching should be adopted in teaching of chemistry as this has helped to stimulate interest in chemistry which will help to enhance their achievement.

We verified the effectiveness of a life skills-based sexuality education program that involved applying learner-centered principles among South Korean upper elementary grade students. We developed an 8-session program to improve sexuality knowledge and the sexual behaviors of adolescents through gaining practical skills applicable to daily life. Participants were 68 students at a school located in Seoul and we analyzed their data using a 1-sample t test to determine the effectiveness of the proposed intervention program. The results showed that the proposed program increased the sexuality knowledge and interpersonal skills of the adolescents; however, the improvement in sexual attitude was not statistically significant. This study is significant as the program is the first life skills-based sexuality education course developed for use with elementary school students in Korea. Our program could be used in developing a learner-centered sexuality education program applicable to real-life situations.

The paper deals with issues connected with the motivation of high school students to participate in activities aimed at professional creative activity and, in this context, issues of environmental influences, especially from school and the family. It is responding to some of the growing efforts of neoliberalism to over individualize creative expression and activities and completely ignore social influences. It also takes into account the cultural legacy of past generations and the sources of creative power that have taken root in society and from which individuals draw and process their inspiration. Presented within are the results of an empirical probe focused on the influence of the social environment on the creative activity of teenagers. The paper follows the relations to the existing body of knowledge on the relationship between social environment and creativity, with an effort to capture the social conditionality of creative performances—to capture their roots. The results of the probe have confirmed the initial hypothesis that the creative efforts of secondary school students taking part in vocational training is based on the social background of the family and school. However, the family influence on the students’ creativity is not as significant as one would expect. It is the indirect effect of the family environment that has a larger influence.

Research comparing the adherence to food-based dietary guidelines (FBDGs) across countries with different socio-economic status is lacking, which may be a concern for developing nutrition policies. The aim was to report on the adherence to FBDGs in high-income (HIC) and low-and-middle-income countries (LMIC). A systematic review with searches in six databases was performed up to June 2020. English language articles were included if they investigated a population of healthy children and adults (7–65 years), using an observational or experimental design evaluating adherence to national FBDGs. Findings indicate that almost 40% of populations in both HIC and LMIC do not adhere to their national FBDGs. Fruit and vegetables (FV) were most adhered to and the prevalence of adhering FV guidelines was between 7% to 67.3%. HIC have higher consumption of discretionary foods, while results were mixed for LMIC. Grains and dairy were consumed below recommendations in both HIC and LMIC. Consumption of animal proteins (>30%), particularly red meat, exceeded the recommendations. Individuals from HIC and LMIC may be falling short of at least one dietary recommendation from their country’s guidelines. Future health policies, behavioral-change strategies, and dietary guidelines may consider these results in their development.

Abstract The use of mindfulness as a tool to improve mental health has received increased attention. Schools provide ideal environments for short-term prevention and skill development for mental health. Further, teachers can promote and reinforce students’ daily use of mindfulness. This study explored the effects of a short-term group mindfulness-based intervention on the mental health of adolescents who have experienced trauma. A total of 49 high school students received a mindfulness-based intervention session followed by homework and teacher reinforcement. The results suggest that a short-term group intervention for mindfulness can potentially improve mindfulness attention awareness and reduce depression and anxiety symptoms in adolescents. As there was no control group, additional research examining the effectiveness of the intervention is essential.

Very few studies have examined moral reasoning in students identified as having behavioral disorders and enrolled in a special education setting. Furthermore, little attention has been paid to the impact of alternative education programs designed for behaviorally disordered youth on moral reasoning development. This research examined the moral reasoning of behaviorally disordered adolescents enrolled in alternative and traditional high school settings. The results indicate that behaviorally disordered high school students enrolled in either an alternative or traditional school setting are significantly lower in moral reasoning compared to their non-behaviorally disordered peers. The moral reasoning of the behaviorally disordered students enrolled in an alternative setting is similar to that of like students enrolled in a traditional school setting. The correlation between time (months) spent in the alternative setting and moral reasoning is positive, but not significant.

The purpose of the present paper is to know the effectiveness of life-skills counseling intervention in enhancing self-sufficiency of high school students. Life-skills counseling is an educational approach, which is used to inculcate the essential life-skills in an individual to meet the challenges of everyday life.  It is also known to be very effective and appropriate for present day scenario.  It is easily adaptable for larger groups.  High School students are in the stage of adolescence.  High school students face a wide variety of problems out of which the major ones are lack of self-sufficiency, inability to manage emotions, decision-making skills etc.  The present study involves 300 high school students (150 Boys and 150 Girls) who are selected from various schools in Mysore city corporation limit. High School Personality Questionnaire (HSPQ) was administered to find out the personality problems of high school students.  Experimental design has been applied and Life-skills counseling intervention has been given for the experimental group.  Life-skills counseling was found to be very effective in enhancing the self-sufficiency of high school students.

This study endeavored to establish trends in the re-enforcing factor related to the consumption of alcoholic beverages among high school students in Liberia, using an experimental research design. A sample of 440 students from two selected schools was determined using Cochran’s formula. A sixteen item questionnaire with a reliability coefficient of 0.70 was administered to the 440 students to identify those who drink alcohol. Applying G Power formula, 84 students were randomly selected out of the 170 students who drink alcohol as participants. Another validated questionnaire with a reliability coefficient of 0.76 was used to collect data from the field. Descriptive statistics and t-test were used to analyze the data. The study concludes that the use of the Alcohol and Life Skills Training Model, which was employed to the experimental group is an effective educational tool to prepare students to make responsible decision about abstaining from drinking alcoholic beverages than the HIV/ AIDS Model which was employed to the control group. It is therefore recommended that the Government of Liberia should adopt the Alcohol and Life Skills Training Model into the National High School Curriculum in order to prevent and control the consumption of alcohol by students in high schools. Secondly, researchers and the Ministry of Education in conjunction with other Ministries such as Health and Youth should conduct further research on a wider scale on alcohol consumption among the youth, including the in-school and the out of school adolescents in Liberia.

Background Stigma and limited mental health literacy impede adolescents getting the help they need for depressive symptoms. A serious game coupled with a classroom session led by lived experience workers (LEWs) might help to overcome these barriers. The school-based Strong Teens and Resilient Minds (STORM) preventive program employed this strategy and offered a serious game, Moving Stories. The current study was carried out to assess inhibiting and promoting factors for scaling up Moving Stories once its effectiveness has been ascertained. Methods Moving Stories was offered in three steps: (1) introductory classroom session, (2) students playing the game for five days, (3) debriefing classroom session led by lived experience worker. Data was collected on the number of participating students, costs of offering Moving Stories, and was further based on the notes of the debriefing sessions to check if mental health first aid (MHFA) strategies were addressed. Results Moving Stories was offered in seven high-schools. Coverage was moderate with 982 participating students out of 1880 (52%). Most participating students (83%) played the Moving Stories app three out of the five days. Qualitative data showed that the MHFAs were discussed in all debriefing sessions. Students showed great interest in lived experience workers’ stories and shared their own experiences with depression. Conclusions Bringing Moving Stories to scale in the high-school setting appears feasible, but will remain logistically somewhat challenging. Future implementation and scale-up of Moving Stories could benefit from improved selection and training of LEWs that played such an important role in grabbing the full attention of students and were able to launch frank discussions about depressive disorder and stigma in classrooms.
