Abstract This research investigates a model for developing meta-cognitive tools to be used by pre-service teachers during apprenticeship (student teaching) experience to operationalise the epistemological model of Cook and Brown (2009). Meta-cognitive tools have proven to be effective for increasing performance and retention of undergraduate students. Postulating that the student teaching experience is a new type of learning ñ learning about practice (knowledge in action), instead of learning curriculum or pedagogy (knowledge possessed) ñ we suggest that a meta-cognitive tool set may prove similarly useful. Before studying the effectiveness of a tool set, however, a model which enables different programmes to evolve and develop appropriate tools is necessary. This case study research explores a model for the development of a context-specific tool set over 18 months, incorporating user feedback, researcher reflection and multiple-tool development. The model showed promise as a starting point for understanding and operationalising complex interactions with theory and practice.

The paper aims to throw light in what manner the theory of attachment can be applied in practice. The following applied studies act as intermediaries connecting theory and practice: (a) studies concerning the place and the role of attachment in partnership, parental and family functioning; (b) those concerning attachment and dysfunctional forms of behavior and (c) those concerning counseling and therapeutic applications of the attachment theory. In the paper these are illustrated by concrete research subjects and approaches. Main findings have been put in relation with the field of practical application. In the final part of the work, the author deals with the nature, the dynamics and the phases of relation between knowledge gained through theoretical research and its application in practical work. The author draws the conclusion that the relation between theory and practice, in the field of the attachment theory, is in the phase of early development characterized by asymmetric developmental levels and unidirectional influence. Highly developed theory enriches the practice by providing the basis for understanding the development and close relations; practice validates theory and its usability. However, the level of mutual influence where the practice of direct work with individuals would shape the theory has not been reached.

The original music conservatories were orphanages. Through innovative teaching methods the masters of these old institutions were able to transform poor and often illiterate castoffs into elite musicians, many of whom became famous in the history of classical music. The book tells the story of how this was done. It shows what the lessons were like, what a typical day was like for an orphan, and how children progressed from simple lessons to ones more advanced than any seen today in colleges and universities. Recent rediscoveries of thousands of the old lessons have allowed us to understand how children’s minds were systematically developed to be able to “think” in music. That is, the lessons slowly built up the mental ability to imagine the interplay of two or more voices or instruments. Today we think of Mozart as having a miraculous ability to imagine musical works in his head, but in truth many of the conservatory graduates of that era had attained a similar level of controlled musical imagination. They could improvise for hours at the keyboard, and they could quickly compose whole works for ensembles. The book is accompanied by 100 YouTube videos so that readers can hear what the lessons sounded like.
