An important stage in the formation of the future specialist is the independent work of the applicant, in particular the involvement of the best representatives in research work. Applicants are attracted to the GDR through a student research group. The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic and quarantine restrictions have forced almost all countries to reconsider educational strategies. Purpose — to evaluate student research group the role of the functioning in the higher medical educational institution at the Department of Pediatric Dentistry in the training of future highly qualified specialists and the peculiarities of its work during distance learning. Results. An important means of organizing the educational work of applicants for in-depth study of various aspects of pediatric dentistry is their research activities in independent work, in the process of which teachers are initiative and interested applicants who continue research within the student research group department, conducting research on selected topics. During distance learning IFNMU uses the site «Office 365 Cloud Services», which is accessible to all teachers and students. During the quarantine, student research group meetings are held in the format of online conferences in the Microsoft Teams program (previously created team with the type «Class» — student research group Department of Pediatric Dentistry, which added students of all courses of the Faculty of Dentistry and events in the program — in calendar according to the calendar-thematic plan student research group meetings, students and teachers are invited). Microsoft Teams is a teamroom for Office 365, which is a simpler version of learning management systems, but allows the learning team to communicate and share files. The program is convenient because it combines everything in a common work environment, which includes chat for discussion, file sharing and corporate programs. The student research group meeting was organized by video link. Conclusions. Thus, participation in the student research group Department of Pediatric Dentistry IFNMU gives applicants the opportunity to prepare a full-fledged scientific work that enhances the educational process, promotes their professional growth, helps to combine creativity, theoretical knowledge and practical skills. In addition, it increases the level of training of future specialists and the formation of research work skills as a component of professional training of applicants and the development of scientific potential of future scientists even during distance learning. The current state of the system of higher medical education is grounded on many factors including the growing volume of specialized information and the need to expand the level of students’ independent work as well as the conditions of certain restrictions independent of the educational system associated with quarantine measures, etc. This situation predetermines the model of blended learning and the search for both new and improvement of traditional methods and approaches for achieving a high-quality educational process, the purpose of which is to train a highly qualified future internship doctor. Relevant introduction of innovative methods along with the classic teaching “at the patient's bedside” both independently and together with the teacher is one of the motivating components for the student to master the discipline “Internal medicine”. There may be the following variants of interactive forms of learning: role play, work in small groups, case method, lesson-conference, creative tasks: thematic crosswords, quizzes; interactive video courses; methodology in the form “brainstorming”, “discussion”; research work), using different computer multimedia training programs, the department's website, electronic textbooks, online conferences, webinars and other high-tech tools. Of course, the model of distance learning introduced by higher education recently cannot replace traditional education, where the basic skills are formed in the field of practical improvement of the patient’s examination and treatment, but it can supplement it in the context of blended learning. In case of being properly applied and as a part of blended learning this model can really improve the interaction between a teacher and a student while preparing for the classroom lesson and during the student's independent work. In this case, the importance of independent theoretical training for a practical lesson becomes crucial with the growth of the motivational component in the conditions of organized interaction and control of academic performance making it possible to increase the volume of practical work with patients in the classroom. Conclusion. Using traditional, interactive and high-tech methods that complement each other in blended learning, the application of an integrated approach helps to improve the quality and effectiveness of education, expands the ability to form the experience of the student's creative and innovative activities which ultimately affects the future doctor’s competence

Purpose Wawasan Open University Library undertook a survey study, based on the Wilson’s revised model of information behaviour (1999), to profile information-seeking behaviour of their distance students in using library resources in their research and learning activities. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach Using random sampling method, samples were selected to ensure proper representation of the population across four schools of studies and five regional centres. A total of 550 questionnaires were sent to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and 435 completed questionnaires were returned with a success response rate of 79 per cent. Findings Findings indicated significant differences between undergraduate and postgraduate students in using the university’s MyDigital Library and physical library for their information needs. Findings also indicated significant difference between first-year and post-first-year students in using internet search engines as part of their information-seeking process. Practical implications Students improving on their information-seeking behaviour in the learning and research work paved way for them to better experience university vivacity and not isolate themselves from distance learning. Originality/value This paper acknowledges the importance of promoting good information-seeking behaviour among distance learners in the scholarship of learning and research work. The forced work of Russian universities remotely in the context of the pandemic (COVID-19) has generated a lot of discussion about the benefits of the new form of education. The first results were summed up and reports were presented, the materials of which showed that the main goal of online education — the prevention of the spread of infection, - has been achieved. Against this background, proposals and publications have appeared substantiating the effectiveness of the massive introduction of distance learning in Russia, including in higher education. However, the assessment of such training by the population and students in publications and in social networks was predominantly negative and showed that the number of emerging problems exceeds the possible benefits of the new educational technology. Based on the analysis of the materials of publications and personal experience of teaching online, the potential benefits and problems of distance learning in higher education in Russia are considered. It is proposed to consider the effects separately for the suppliers of new technology (government, universities) and consumers (students, teachers, society). It is substantiated that the massive introduction of online education allows not only to reduce the negative consequences of epidemics, but also to reduce budgetary funding for universities, optimize the age composition of teachers, and reduce the cost of maintaining educational buildings. However, there will be a leveling / averaging of the quality of education, and responsibility for the quality of training will shift from the state/universities to students. The critical shortcomings of online education are the low degree of readiness of the digital infrastructure, the lack of a mechanism for identifying and monitoring the work of students, information security problems, and the lack of trust in such training of the population. The massive use of online education creates a number of risks for the country, the most critical of which is the destruction of the higher education system and a drop in the effectiveness of personnel training. The consequences of this risk realization are not compensated by any possible budget savings.

Objective - This project sought to identify students’ strengths and weaknesses in locating, retrieving, and citing information in order to deliver information skills workshops more effectively. Methods - Bibliographies submitted from first-year engineering and second- and fourth-year chemical engineering students’ project reports were analysed for the number of items cited, the variety of items cited, and the correct use of citation style. The topics of the project reports were also reviewed to see the relationships between the topics and the items cited. Results - The results show that upper level students cited more items in total than did lower level students in their bibliographies. Second- and fourth-year engineering students cited more books and journal articles than first-year students cited. Web sites were used extensively by all three groups of students, and for some first-year students these were the most frequently used sources. Students from all three groups had difficulties with citation style. Conclusion - There was a clear difference in citation frequency between upper and lower level engineering students. Different strategies of information skills instruction are needed for different levels of students. Librarians and department faculty members need to include good quality Internet resources in their teaching and to change the emphasis from finding information to finding, interpreting, and citing accurately.
