scholarly journals Cross-cultural image in Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel “The Remains of the Day”

The article deals with the analysis of the image of the protagonist, depicted in the novel “The Remains of the Day” written by Kazuo Ishiguro. Created at the crossroads of various cultural paradigms, the novel belongs to the space of multicultural literature, which increasingly attracts the attention of the present-day researchers. A mention also should be made that multicultural authors are defined as carriers of the unique vision of the world, since the so-called intercultural sensibility, that appears to be a result of cultural accumulation, brings about a qualitatively new type of creativity. It is to this generation of writers that the creativity of the modern English writer of Japanese origin, Kazuo Ishiguro, belongs to. The special position of a hybrid writer, who cannot be credited neither to the generation of Japanese nor to the generation of English writers, gives rise to a unique style of narration. This style of narration combines the most prominent features of both cultures. It should be stressed that the image of the protagonist of the analysed novel makes it possible to identify a number of ethno-cultural units that are common to both the Japanese and the English. In addition to this, the author creates a cross-cultural image. The English nature of writing is manifested in the references to the characteristic features of the typical Englishman, whose image originates from the time of the Victorian novel. First and foremost, such features as loyalty, diligence and dedication should be noted as an example. The eastern element of the image of the protagonist is manifested in the appeal to the Eastern philosophy of Buddhism and the implementation of the basic principles of the samurai code of honour. However, it is difficult to distinguish different national components in the novel, because both nations have a common set of attributes that form the so-called “interspace” of the novel. Due to the successful manoeuvring of these attributes, certain ethno-cultural stereotypes are being eroded. However, the juggling of the stereotypes is not an end in itself. They rather serve as an auxiliary means of disclosing the author's philosophy. The above-named problems are studied on the example of the works devoted to the concept of Englishness and Japanesseness and well as the treatises “Hagakure: Book of the Samurai” by Yamamoto Tsunetomo and “Bushido: The Soul of Japan” by Inazo Nitobe.

The article deals with the issue of linguistic and cultural realia and their peculiarities in Tony Morrison’s novel «Jazz». The study is carried out in the multicultural aspect and begins with the detailed analysis of the terms ‘multiculturalism’ and ‘multicultural literature’. The theoretical background of the article is based on the works of Taylor, Sanders, Gutmann,Zverev, Tolkachev, Denisova, Tlostanova in which they defined the concept of multiculturalism and dwelled on the issues of ethnic literatures and their peculiarities. The article focuses on the specific features of the multicultural phenomenon in AfricanAmerican society, on the issues of the national identity and language identity of African-Americanpeople. The article outlines the major means of expression the national and cultural code in the artistic text, gives the definition of the term ‘realia’, emphasizes the importance of these linguistic means in conveying the authentic cultural atmosphere of the text. Characteristic features of the novel «Jazz» are analyzed in the research as well as the use of various linguo-cultural devices such as anthroponyms, toponyms, cultural and historical realia, symbols, allusions, cultural myths. The peculiarities of the language of the protagonists are also studied in detail, such as the use of African American Vernacular English. The article outlines the brightest examples of the combination of language and culture in the work of fiction in the multicultural aspect.

A new type of six-bar swaying machine was put forward, which is an ingenious combination of plane multi-bar mechanism and high pressure oil cylinder. Preliminary analysis shows that this machine has many advantages, such as the torque produced by its unit weight, its small size, its light deadweight, etc. Thus it can be applied to situations that need swaying mechanism with low rotational speed and great torque. Firstly, the mechanism composition and working principle of the swaying machine were introduced. Secondly, parameterized modeling of the mechanism was carried out by utilizing software ADAMS. Then kinematic analysis and kinetic analysis were completed by using ADAMS. Finally, key dimensions were adjusted according to kinetic analysis. These tasks are believed to be beneficial to the development of the novel transmission.

The design of mechanisms for use in practical machinery applications is often of a trial-and-error nature based on traditional practice. Much emphasis has been given to the theory of mechanisms in recent years but this has yet to find wide practical application. This paper is a case study of how a basic idea, conceived by University-based inventors and intended to improve a slow method of making a textile pile fabric, became a reality in the form of a completely new type of high-speed textile machine for making an improved textile product, all within a time scale of four years. It also shows how recent University researches are further advancing its potential from both the machinery manufacturing and textile technology aspects. Step-by-step from the early experimental stages, it illustrates how the challenges of developing the novel mechanisms required for this unconventional machine and process were met by combining practical experience of traditional machinery design with theoretical investigations based on the new techniques of mechanism analysis and synthesis.

Kazuo Ishiguro has suggested that his work of medieval fantasy, The Buried Giant (2015), draws on a “quasi-historical” King Arthur, in contrast to the Arthur of legend. This article reads Ishiguro’s novel against the medieval work that codified the notion of an historical King Arthur, Geoffrey of Monmouth’s History of the Kings of Britain (c. 1139). Geoffrey’s History offered a largely fictive account of the British past that became the most successful historiographical phenomenon of the English Middle Ages. The Buried Giant offers an interrogation of memory that calls such “useful” constructions of history into question. The novel deploys material deriving from Geoffrey’s work while laying bear its methodology; the two texts speak to each other in ways sometimes complementary, sometimes deconstructive. That Ishiguro’s critique can be applied to Geoffrey’s History points to recurrent strategies of history-making, past and present, whereby violence serves as a mechanism for the creation of historical form.

AbstractXiaolu Guo’s A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers is a novel in which language has a special protagonism. The main character, Z, is a Chinese girl who goes to London to improve her basic English. Her idiolect is thus characterised by a great quantity of linguistic errors of different types. This lack of proficiency in English makes cross-cultural communication really difficult. Therefore, language becomes in this novel not only a characterisation tool, but also an essential aspect of the plot. Moreover, it is also a paramount source of humour, since there is plenty of jokes based, for instance, on puns, many of which derive from Z’s lack of linguistic competence. The main objective of this paper is to analyse language representation in the source text as well as in the Spanish, Italian and French versions of the novel from the perspective of relevance theory. Out of the three versions, the Spanish one reflects the highest interpretive resemblance in this regard, whereas the Italian one occupies the opposite pole of the scale. With regard to the translation of wordplay, the pragmatic scenario is normally maintained in the TT, although there are statistically significant differences between the three versions and across different types of puns.

Reflection on the history of the novel usually begins with consideration of the social, political, and economic transformations within society that favored the “rise” of a new type of narrative. This remains true even with the numerous and important studies appearing during the past ten years, which relate the novel to an everbroadening spectrum of ideological issues—gender, class, race, and, most recently, nationalism. Yet a history of the genre might reflect not just on the novel’s national, but also its transnational, trajectory, its spread across the globe, away from its original points of emergence. Such a history would take into account the expansion of western markets—the growing exportation of goods and ideas, as well as of social, political, and cultural forms from the West—that promoted the novel’s importation by nonwestern societies. Furthermore, it could lead one to examine the very interesting inverse relationship between two kinds of migration, both of which are tied to the First World’s uneven “development” of the Third. In a world system that draws out natural resources in exchange for technologically mediated goods, the emigration of laborers and intellectuals from peripheral societies to the centers of power of the West and the immigration of a western literary genre into these same societies must be viewed as related phenomena.

Eduard Cuelenaere, Gertjan Willems & Stijn Joye Same same same, but different: a comparative film analysis of the Belgian, Dutch and American Loft Against the theoretical background of the concept ‘karaoke-Americanism’, this article compares the Belgian, Dutch and American version of the film Loft. Several (dis)similarities in the representation of sexuality, female characters, and ethnicity, as well as some formal changes, are observed. By combining these results with self-conducted, in-depth and press interviews with the filmmakers of these films, it is ascertained that, although the three versions share a similar use of specific Hollywood conventions, the changes in representation were motivated by perceived cultural differences. Building on known cultural stereotypes and clichés, filmmakers reinforce specific cultural (and national) identities, with the aim of enhancing the recognizability for their local audiences. In conclusion, the Dutch and Belgian filmmakers, in an attempt of localizing the universal, realized a hyperreal version of their own or another culture. Abstract: The danger of the novel coronavirus has not yet come to an end, and new variants have begun to attack the world. What philosophy should humankind’s strategy be based on when human society as a group is fighting against Covid-19, as the pandemic ravages the world? Unfortunately, political leaders of various countries have failed to achieve the overall awareness of attacking the pandemic for a shared future for mankind so far. In the face of the pandemic, mankind as a whole urgently needs to break through the narrow nation-oriented ideology of seeking only self-protection. The International Community should establish a new type of international cooperation featuring the concept of harmony of "all things under heaven as a unity". The international relations system dominated by the power ofwestern discourse is now in a bottleneck. The main aim of this article is to study the ancient Chinese wisdom of "the Unity of Man and Heaven" philosophy and build a global harmonious community. Synthesis of photoreactive solvent-free acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives in the recovered system The present paper discloses a novel photoreactive solvent-free acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) systems, especially suitable for the so much adhesive film applications as the double-sided, single-sided or carrier-free technical tapes, self-adhesive labels, protective films, marking and sign films and wide range of medical products. The novel photoreactive solvent-free pressure-sensitive adhesives contain no volatile organic compounds (residue monomers or organic solvent) and comply with the environment and legislation. The synthesis of this new type of acrylic PSA is conducted in common practice by solvent polymerisation. After the organic solvent are removed, there remains a non-volatile, solvent-free highly viscous material, which can be processed on a hot-melt coating machine at the temperatures of about 100 to 140°C.
