This article describes the epistemology of mathematical scholarship, the constructivism view of mathematics and how mathematical learning can achieve the goals of which one is by studying discovery with a philosophical approach that emphasizes its implications on the learning of mathematics. The world of educational research, especially mathematics has shown a shift, which is more emphasize the teaching and learning process and research methods that apply the concept that, in learning someone to construct his knowledge. Humans construct their knowledge through interaction with objects, phenomena, experiences, and the environment. A knowledge is assumed to be true if it can be useful to confront and solve appropriate problems or phenomena. On constructivism view, knowledge can not be transferred from one person to another, but must be interpreted by one person individually. Knowledge is not something that is finished, but a process that develops continuously. In the process that the activity of someone who wants to know, very instrumental in the development of knowledge. Some factors such as limited previous construction experience, and a person's cognitive structure may limit the establishment of the person's personality. Conversely, conflict situations or anomalies that make people forced to think more deeply and situations that require people to defend themselves and explain in more detail, will develop one's knowledge. Constructivism is divided into three levels: radical, hypothetical realism, and the usual. This difference is based on the relationship between knowledge and existing reality.

Writing is one of the English skills. Teaching writing is a process to improve students' ability to write in English correctly. Descriptive text is text used to describe a person, place or object. The difficulty experienced in teaching writing through descriptive text is the lack of attention of students towards the explanation given by the teacher. To overcome this, researchers applied VARK learning style to teaching writing. VARK learning style is a learning style using all five senses to get information or knowledge in the teaching and learning process. This study aims to explain the application of VARK learning style in teaching writing through descriptive text. The procedures for applying VARK learning style in teaching writing through descriptive text are: (1) The teacher explains the meaning, patterns and characteristics of descriptive text languages, (2) The teacher asks students to make small groups, (3) The teacher gives examples of descriptive texts, ( 4) The teacher gives questions in the form of pictures to students and asks to make descriptive texts, (5) The teacher asks students to show the results of students' work in front of the class. Based on this research, it can be seen that the advantages of VARK learning style is that it can increase student learning interest, student enthusiasm and reciprocity between teacher and students.

The result of this research indicates that the activities are divided into three activities. There are pre-activities, whilst-activities and post-activities. Pre-activities are greeting, asking condition, giving motivation and mentioning the materials. Whilst-activities are explaining materials, explaining the instruction of ICM, and giving exercise of ICM. Then, post-activities are asking the difficulties, summarizing materials and closing. From the result of the data observation cheek list, the researcher makes the class interesting and the students always pay attention in teaching reading. The advantages using ICM are that: 1)Index Card Match (ICM) the students are able to read descriptive text faster in limited time, 2) Index card match (ICM) makes teaching learning process exciting, 3)Index card match makes the subject matter presented be more attractive for students, 4)Index Card Match can make students have self confidence, enjoy, have good enthusiasm in the teaching and learning. This study was a case study which aimed to analyze the types of questions used by an English teacher, the purposes of questions asked by the teacher, and the strategy used to cope with non-responded questions. The subject of this study was an English teacher who taught seventh grade students at SMPN 1 Singaraja which is located in Singaraja, Buleleng regency, Bali, Indonesia. The data were collected through observation, interview, and video recording. The result of the analysis showed that from 241 questions, the teacher more frequently asked convergent, closed, and display questions rather than divergent, open, and referential questions. Procedural questions were also found. The teacher’s questions served several purposes such as to check students’ knowledge and understanding, to attract students’ activeness, to develop students’ interest and curiosity, and to stimulate students in stating information. It was also found that the teacher used seven strategies to cope with non-responded questions. This study suggested the teacher to balance the number of convergent, closed, and display with divergent, open, and referential questions to be used during teaching and learning process. In addition, the teacher should know more about the strategies for non-responded questions and the proper way to use those strategies to make the teaching and learning process runs smoothly.

Project-based learning (PBL) has gained popularity in education recently. This teaching method provides opportunities for students to learn independently by doing group works in the form of a project. It is seen as a suitable method to teach EFL to replace the traditional ways of teaching. Thus, this case study explores the students' and teachers' experience implementing PBL in the EFL class. Three EFL classes from three different high schools in Indonesia were observed to explore this issue. Six students and three teachers were interviewed to confirm the observation’s result and determine their perception of learning using PBL. The findings show that the class situation improved positively after implementing PBL. Furthermore, PBL was well perceived by both students and teachers. The teaching and learning process went smoothly and well-controlled. The students and teachers show positive perceptions toward PBL in EFL classes. However, some negative points of PBL were also pointed out. Thus, educational sectors may use this study's results to improve the educational quality, specifically for EFL classes.
