This study also discusses the journey of art, the factors behind his work attitude, and the aesthetic concepts contained in his paintings. To answer these problems, qualitative research methods are used which include observation, interviews, and literature study. The research was conducted in the City of Bukittinggi and Padang Pariaman district, West Sumatra province. Based on the research results, the beginning of Afianto Arifin's artistic career began in Jakarta. Apart from painting, Arifin also got a project to make sculptures and reliefs. After that, Arifin was diligent in making paintings. Arifin tends to raise objects of natural scenery and women's beauty. The idea of creating Arifin's paintings was influenced by artistic factors and cultural factors in his native area, namely Bukittinggi. The aesthetic concepts contained in Arifin's paintings are discussed from the point of view of art styles, art structures, as well as the interaction of media and meaning. Arifin is a person who tends to not want to be exposed and does not like to see exhibitions, this makes Arifin stick to his ideals and influences his artistic style until now.

The work examines the contemporary art scene of Novosibirsk from 2009–2019. In the first part of the article we carry out a sociological analysis of the artistic life of the city and highlight such features as: the prevalence of self-organized forms of art presentation over institutional forms, non-publicity and “diffusivity” of a significant part of art practices. We also analyse the influence of these factors on the perception of art and discuss what kinds of methodological challenges they provoke. Further we give a brief overview of some significant exhibitions of the past decade (such as “Siberian Underground. 20 Years Later”, “Repetition of the Untrodden” etc.), examine artistic circles of the city and their transformation from 1990 to our time, discuss principles of their formation and the nature of interactions among them. We also propose a schematic representation of the artistic circles under consideration, their interactions and attractions from a historical point of view. The second part of the article examines the aesthetic features of contemporary art in Novosibirsk from 2009-2019. The transition from the art of the 00s and early 10s to the art of younger generations of the late 10s is characterized by a change in the emotional tonality: from vitality and expressivity to fragile and melancholic sensitivity, from political irony and grotesque to ethical complexity and vulnerability. When considering art of individual artists of the specified period we outline two possible ways of their analysis based on the allocation of a common motive: neo-expressionist and post-conceptual. The first of these is united by the motive of “toys” as a way of working with corporeality and doubleness (for example, in the works of Konstantin Skotnikov, the Cosmonauts art group, Denis Efremov, Alexei Grishchenko, Mayana Nasybullova, etc.). The post-conceptual line is presented through the works of such artists as: Alexander Limarev, Mikhail Karlov, the BERTOLLO art group, Irca Solza. Here we propose a unifying motive of “a game” as a dichotomy of rule systems and their failure that is viewed as an opportunity to conceive another world. In the conclusion of the article, we suggest that such an integrated approach to the analysis of regional art of the last decade is promising.

The article examines the aesthetic category of “interesting” as a dominant of urban environment development. The authors try to comprehend this category from the point of view of cultural knowledge. The article includes a theoretical section, where, basing on well-known concepts, the authors outline the principles of embedding the “interesting”, as something aesthetics and artistic, in the postmodern fabric of modern megacities. The analytical part of the article is based on specific examples represented by urban cultural landscapes, by the postmodern clash of art and non-art in urban space, by event communications and other forms of urban culture representation. The study resulted in designation of one of the main problems of modern cities: as a result of their excessive saturation with “interesting”, there can be observed a growing cultural and aesthetic insensitivity to the “interesting” among their citizens. From the methodological point of view, the study revealed that, in interpretation of modern phenomena of socio-cultural reality, it is not enough to proceed from the basic principles of a particular science. So, the interdisciplinary approach, as a methodological resource in demand today, allows revealing, by the example of the concept of “interesting”, the interconnection and interdependence of the methodological approaches of aesthetics and culturology for studying the cultural environment of modern cities. The authors analyze the “interesting” as an instrument of influencing on the cultural environment of the city and the perception of its text. As a result, the “interesting” intensifies the nonlinearity and fractality of urban space. On the example of Russian cities development, the article reveals that the formation of a new cultural environment is always connected not only with changing of artistic design solutions or/and aesthetics trends. The authors prove that the need for “interesting” widens the frames of the subject field of aesthetics. The “interesting” is moving to the center of interdisciplinary cultural studies.

In contemporary development, the penjor is increasingly being used both as a means of religious rituals and as a profane means. This research focuses on 3 questions 1). What is the process of the emergence of penjor in the city of Mataram? 2). What are the types, functions, and meanings of penjor in the city of Mataram? 3). How is penjor a symbol of the self-image of Hindus in the city of Mataram? This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach that emphasizes the interpretation of denotative and connotative meanings by using the theory of symbolic and semiotic interactionism. Data collection techniques by observation, interview, literature study, and documentation. The results of the analysis include: 1) The appearance of penjor in the city of Mataram began with the history of the attack of the Karangasem kingdom to Lombok. The increasingly safe situation of Lombok encourages the transfer of the Karangasem community to Lombok which carries Balinese Hindu traditions, including penjor, 2) Penjor is divided into 2 types namely ceremonial penjor and ornamental penjor. Penjor ceremony is made from bamboo with curved edges, the trunk is decorated with Ambu (young palm leaves) or Busung (young coconut leaves) filled with accessories. Penjor ceremony functioned as a means of religious rituals (god yadnya) and Manusa yadnya. The meaning of penjor symbolizes the mountain and its contents where the gods come from, as a form of expression of gratitude for the gift given by God and the celebration of Galungan. The commodification of penjor in the city of Mataram is still in a standard form but has begun to use a combination of natural and synthetic ingredients. 3) Penjor is a symbol of the self-image of Hindus, showing internal solidarity with other Hindus and externally to present the front stage as a Hindu that refers to the aesthetic and artistic values of religious ritual symbols that contain the values of the Satyam, Siwam, Sundaram.

AbstractThe Book of Vows of the City Hall of Toledo is considered one of the most important codex kept in the Archive of the city. The studies regarding its content have been already analyzed for decades, but its artistic contribution has been neglected. The illuminated pages, beautifully framed, have fascinated all those who have approached the Toledo manuscript. Our main objective has been to analyze from the aesthetic, stylistic and iconographic point of view the set of illuminated repertoires. This article will stablish new relations with other codices that we have considered contemporary, according to the date of renewal of the book: the year 1594. We have been able to link this work stylistically and technically with the new formulas of illumination, started at the scriptorium of the monastery of El Escorial during the last quarter of the five hundred.

The article investigates the species streets and squares of Lviv, highlights the principles of their location and establishes their significance for the perception of the urban environment. Particular attention is paid to the formation of streets during the reconstruction. Emphasis is placed on the importance of viewing platforms for the formation of the city's silhouette and the perception of its image. Viewpoints are an integral part of the spatial composition of the city. With their professional location, the city acquires greater aesthetic perfection. The environment becomes more comfortable and attractive from an aesthetic point of view. Accordingly, the architectural value of the space grows, the city acquires compositional expressiveness, a unique image is created. At the beginning of the study, the viewpoints of the city were divided into two main groups: viewing streets and viewing platforms. Each of these groups is important for the formation of the overall composition of the city. Several viewing streets were explored and the focus was on their visual connections. Species sites in Lviv were analyzed in the following locations: Vysokyi Zamok mountain; the tower of the church of St. Olga-Elizabeth; Town Hall Tower; ferris wheel in B. Khmelnytsky Park. Their significance for the perception of the image of the city is determined. Lviv has a unique history and architecture. The location on a hilly terrain adds to the city's attractiveness and charm. For centuries, our architects have made sure that the city is perceived as a holistic compositional system with its dominants and visual connections. Now Lviv is being renewed and developing at a very fast pace as a European city. Therefore, it is very important that the new building does not distort what was created by many generations of architects, but only adds attractiveness and individuality. View points are important for the formation of the attractiveness of the image of the city, so special attention should be paid to the preservation of existing view streets and areas and the organization of new ones. During the formation of species points, the following features should be taken into account: 1) When forming new elements of the city it is necessary to take into account the location of existing viewing streets and areas. It is very important that the new objects do not obscure the existing visual connections that have been formed over the centuries and play the most important role in the perception of the image of the city. 2) When building the areas under inspection - to coordinate the form with the environment. So that the high-rise buildings of the new areas do not distort the view of the city from the historic environment. 3) When placing new observation decks, take into account the orientation relative to the sides of the world, so that the observer can inspect the color picture, not just the silhouette. The spatial organization of viewpoints will not only improve the aesthetic qualities of the city, highlight individual features, improve the perception of the image as a whole, but can also be used to attract tourists.

In this paper I am proposing to investigate some possible connecting points between art, aesthetics and the urban experience, more precisely how the perception and experience of the city as well as the features of urban life can inspire artists. At the same time, I am also curious how artworks can be used to understand this urban experience, as well as how they can be interpreted as not only simple descriptions and depictions, but also as active contributions and modes of suggesting solutions to the most pressing issues of contemporary cities and of city life. Hence my primary aim is discussing some approaches towards the aesthetic analyses of urbanity through modern and contemporary examples. In this way I am focusing less on how the city appears as a mere motive in artworks, or how it is used as main object or background element indicating the context in representations; and I am also not aiming to provide a survey analyses of the numerous ideas of the aesthetics of urbanity. Instead of these, here I am concentrating on how urbanity and the experiencing of the city(life) in itself as well as its multifaceted aspects can become a source of inspiration and at the same time a critically analysed subject, i.e. a concept that is examined through the work itself.

Place branding is a network of associations in the consumer’s mind, based on the visual, verbal, and behavioral expression of a place. Food can be an important tool to summarize it as it is part of the culture of a city and its symbolic capital. Food is imaginary, a ritual and a social construction. This paper aims to explore a ritual that has turned into one of the brands of Lisbon in the past few years. The fresh sardines barbecued out of doors, during Saint Anthony’s festival, has become a symbol that can be found on t-shirts, magnets and all kinds of souvenirs. Over the year, tourists can buy sardine shaped objects in very cheap stores to luxurious shops. There is even a whole boutique dedicated to the fish: “The Fantastic World of Portuguese Sardines” and an annual competition promoted by the city council to choose the five most emblematic designs of sardines. In order to analyze the Sardine phenomenon from a city branding point of view, the objective of this paper is to comprehend what associations are made by foreigners when they are outside of Lisbon. As a methodological procedure five design sardines, were used of last year to questioning to which city they relate them in interviews carried in Madrid, Lyon, Rome and London. Upon completion of the analysis, the results of the city branding strategy adopted by the city council to promote the sardines as the official symbol of Lisbon is seen as a Folkmarketing action. The effects are positive, but still quite local. On the other hand, significant participation of the Lisbon´s dwellers in the Sardine Contest was observed, which seems to be a good way to promote the city identity and pride in their best ambassador: the citizens.

Guwahati derives its name from the Assamese word “Guwa” means areca nut and “Haat” means market. However, the modern Guwahati had been known as the ancient Pragjyotishpura and was the capital of Assam under the Kamrupa kingdom. A beautiful city Guwahati is situated on the south bank of the river Bramhaputra. Moreover, It is known as the largest city in the Indian state of Assam and also the largest metropolis in North East India. It has also its importance as the gateway to the North- East India. Assamese and English are the spoken languages in Guwahati.  In 1667, the Mogul forces were defeated in the battle by the Ahom forces commanded by Lachut Barphukan. Thus, in a sense Guwahati became the bone of contention among the Ahoms, Kochas and the Moguls during the medieval period.  Guwahati the administrative headquarters of Lower Assam with a viceroy or Barbhukan was made by the Ahom king.  Since 1972 it has been the capital of Assam. The present paper will discuss the changes happened in Guwahati over the period of late 1970s till the present time. It will focus on the behavior of people, transformed temples, Panbazar of the city, river bank of Bramhaputra, old Fancy Bazaar, chaotic ways, festivals and seasons including a fifth man made season etc. It will also deal how over the years a city endowed with nature’s gifts and scenic views, has been changing as “a dirty city”. Furthermore, it will also present the insurgencies that have barged into the city. The occurrence of changes will be discussed through the perspective and point of view of Srutimala Duara as presented in her book Mindprints of Guwahati.
