The selection process for getting the perfect variety is continuous and always relevant. In the context of the development of domestic viticulture and winemaking, modern economic and environmental conditions require a wide range of grapes that have a set of various economically valuable qualities, including high adaptability, biological plasticity, combined with consistently high quality of the crop. It is especially important to develop competitive, highly profitable grape varieties that do not require a large pesticide load and are resistant to frost and fungal diseases. The paper presents the results of agrobiological study of the red Krasnostop Carpi wine grape variety. Agrobiological and morphological characteristics of the variety are given according to research data for 3 years. The authors carried out ampelometric screening of the leaf to certify the variety. The Krasnostop Carpi is a mid-late ripeness variety of grape. The weight of berry is 1.9–2.0 g.The skin is of medium thickness. The pulp is meaty and juicy. The taste is harmonious. Sugar content is 220–240 g/dm3, acidity – 6.3 g/dm3. The variety can withstand frost down to – 25–27°С, resistant to mildew and powdery mildew. The Krasnostop Carpi variety is promising for cultivation in the northern industrial viticulture of Russia. The variety passed State testing in 2018, it features high biological plasticity: resistance to thermal stress and fungal diseases. It is used for the production of dry wines of high quality. The authors recommend the variety for commercial growing in Region 6 using the uncovered growing technology with two preventive treatments against fungal diseases.

The article presents the results of studies of the physical-chemical and organoleptic characteristics of native red grape varieties of Crimea and Don in the system “grapes-wine material” from the Ampelographic collection of Magarach Institute (village Vilino, Bakhchisaray district). It was established that the activity of oxidizing enzymes (peroxidase and monophenol-monooxygenase) was low or absent in almost all varieties. The technological stock of phenolic substances in the studied grape varieties was in a rather wide range - from 2139 to 3865 mg/dm, including the technological reserve of coloring substances - from 149 (‘Kokur Krasnyi’) to 1232 mg/dm (‘Bezymyannyi’). Good foaming capacity (V more than 800 cm) was achieved in wine materials made of ‘Kefesiya’ grape variety. The ratio of mass concentrations of tartaric and malic acids was optimal (more than 1) in all varieties under study. High tasting evaluation gained the varieties ‘Tsimladar’, ‘Bezymyannyi’ and ‘Solnechnaya Dolina 58’. Basing on the combination of studies of essential and additional physical-chemical and organoleptic parameters in the system “grapes-wine material” and on the technological assessment of native red grapes of Crimea and Don that grow in the Ampelographic collection of the Magarach Institute, we can draw the following conclusion: wine materials made of native red grape varieties ‘Kefesiya’, ‘Solnechnaya Dolina 58’, ‘Tsimladar’, ‘Bezymyannyi’ are of interest to the production of sparkling wines.

Background. Resistance to the effects of plant biotic stressors is determined by a set of factors. Among them, the leading protective role is often assigned to the physiological and biochemical characteristics of the surface tissues. However, one cannot ignore the specificity of the microstructural organization of the plant surface, since the nature of interactions in phytopathogenic organisms is more complex than the chemical impact. Meanwhile, the information accumulated to date about the structure of the surface tissues of the vegetative and reproductive organs of plants, and the interface of mycobiota, is fragmentary.Objective. Mature leaves and fruits taken from representatives of the subfamily Maloideae Werber (Malus domestica Borkh., Pyrus communis L., Cydonia oblonga Mill. and Mespilus germanica L.) were selected for the study.Materials and methods. Samples for the research were taken from the middle part of the crown of model trees in 3 replications. In recent years, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with cryofixation is considered the most promising technique and is used to analyze the surface of biological organisms and identification of species. It is particularly informative in the case of organisms with complex surface micromorphology and for studying the biodiversity of pathogens. However, in this work we combined the methods of light, electron (SEM, TEM) and confocal microscopy. The samples were also studied using phytopathological and histochemical techniques. Condensed polyphenols were detected using K2Cr2O7 and FeCl3 as well as 4-(Dimethylamino)cinnamaldehyde (DMACA, Sigma-Aldrich).Results. On the basis of the obtained phytopathological materials and published data an overview of fungal diseases afflicting leaves and fruits of M. domestica, P. communis, C. oblonga and M. germanica was made. It has been established that a common feature of the Maloideae fruits is the accumulation of condensed polyphenols, which play an important protective role against biotic stressors, in the cells of the pericarp’s outer tissues. Anatomical and morphological characteristics of passive immunity, or horizontal resistance to fungal pathogens, include the specific nature of waxy and cuticular deposits, features of the formation of cuticular folds and peristomatic rings in the stomata area and microstrands at the base of trichomes, thickness of the cuticle and cork tissue, and the development of lenticels on fruits.Conclusion. The studied model plants suffer from a sufficiently wide range of diseases with different etiologies; among them, the most widespread and harmful are mycoses. In view of this, their resistance to fungal pathogens correlates with the specificity of the leaf and fruit surface microstructure and the content of phenolic substances (polyphenols) in the cells of the pericarp’s surface tissues.

This article presents experimental data on physicochemical parameters (humidity, density, bulk density, effective viscosity) of grape pomace of various white and red grape varieties, subject to the processing technology applied. It was established that pomace humidity varies across a wide range of values, subject to the grape variety, grape processing technology and pressure equipment. A study of Chardonnay pomace was used to note the influence of pressure equipment and processing technology upon pomace humidity. The values of density and bulk density had a strong invert correlation with the humidity index. With increase of humidity, the values of density and bulk density lowered both for white and red pomace. It was shown that the value of effective viscosity of pomace of white grape varieties varied from 8.8 (Chardonnay) to 12.8 (Gewürztraminer) Pa·s; that of red grape varieties varied from 13.2 (Pinot Noir) to 15.8 (Saperavi, fermented pomace) Pa·s. Such variation may have been related to the varietal peculiarities of grapes, pomace humidity, and concentrations of high-molecular compounds. The highest total of phenolic compounds was observed in extracts of fermented Saperavi pomace. The total of pectic substances in grape pomace varied from 5.5 to 7.2% of dry weight for the white grape varieties, and from 4.4 to 5.9% for the red grapes. As for the concentrations of pectic substances, Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc pomace were distinguished among the white grapes, and fermented Cabernet Sauvignon pomace – among the red grapes.

(1) Background: Both sensory quality and healthy attributes of Vitis vinifera grapes used for winemaking are closely related with the polyphenolic composition of their skins. (2) Methods: In this study, the polyphenolic characterization (flavan-3-ols, procyanidins, flavonols, stilbenes, anthocyanins) was investigated by ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled to a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (UPLC-QqQ-MS). Skins from Vitis vinifera Merlot, Tannat, and Syrah red grape varieties cultivated in the south of France at different stages of ripening in 2018 were used. The anti-inflammatory and the antioxidant potential of the extracts were evaluated by the measure of nitric oxide (NO) and the intracellular reactive oxygen species production (ROS) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages. (3) Results: 41 polyphenols were quantified in all samples. Generally, the flavan-3-ol and procyanidin content decreased during ripening whereas the anthocyanins and stilbenes increased. In addition, as a novelty of this work, a wide identification and characterization of monomeric and oligomeric stilbenes was assessed by using authentic standards isolated in our laboratory, some of them (parthenocissin A and miyabenol C) reported for the first time in Merlot, Tannat and Syrah cultivars. The before-veraison skin extracts of all studied varieties, exhibited higher NO and ROS productions inhibition (>50%) proving both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Satellite remote sensing is a valuable tool for coastal management, enabling the possibility to repeatedly observe nearshore sandbars. However, a lack of methodological approaches for sandbar detection prevents the wider use of satellite data in sandbar studies. In this paper, a novel fully automated approach to extract nearshore sandbars in high–medium-resolution satellite imagery using a GIS-based algorithm is proposed. The method is composed of a multi-step workflow providing a wide range of data with morphological nearshore characteristics, which include nearshore local relief, extracted sandbars, their crests and shoreline. The proposed processing chain involves a combination of spectral indices, ISODATA unsupervised classification, multi-scale Relative Bathymetric Position Index (RBPI), criteria-based selection operations, spatial statistics and filtering. The algorithm has been tested with 145 dates of PlanetScope and RapidEye imagery using a case study of the complex multiple sandbar system on the Curonian Spit coast, Baltic Sea. The comparison of results against 4 years of in situ bathymetric surveys shows a strong agreement between measured and derived sandbar crest positions (R2 = 0.999 and 0.997) with an average RMSE of 5.8 and 7 m for PlanetScope and RapidEye sensors, respectively. The accuracy of the proposed approach implies its feasibility to study inter-annual and seasonal sandbar behaviour and short-term changes related to high-impact events. Algorithm-provided outputs enable the possibility to evaluate a range of sandbar characteristics such as distance from shoreline, length, width, count or shape at a relevant spatiotemporal scale. The design of the method determines its compatibility with most sandbar morphologies and suitability to other sandy nearshores. Tests of the described technique with Sentinel-2 MSI and Landsat-8 OLI data show that it can be applied to publicly available medium resolution satellite imagery of other sensors.

The purpose of this paper was to establish the sensory characteristics of wines made from old and newly introduced red grape varieties. To attain this objective, 16 Brazilian red varietal wines were evaluated by a sensory panel of enologists who assessed wines according to their aroma and flavor descriptors. A 90 mm unstructured scale was used to quantify the intensity of 26 descriptors, which were analyzed by means of the Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The PCA showed that three important components represented 74.11% of the total variation. PC 1 discriminated Tempranillo, Marselan and Ruby Cabernet wines, with Tempranillo being characterized by its equilibrium, quality, harmony, persistence and body, as well as by, fruity, spicy and oaky characters. The other two varietals were defined by vegetal, oaky and salty characteristics; PC 2 discriminated Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Arinarnoa, where Pinot Noir was characterized by its floral flavor; PC 3 discriminated only Malbec, which had weak, floral and fruity characteristics. The other varietal wines did not show important discriminating effects.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the relationships between morphological characteristics and fresh matter yield of cactus pear and identify their direct and indirect effects. Nineteen accessions were evaluated for the following traits: number (NCl), thickness (ThCl), length (LCl) and width (WCl) of cladodes, plant height (PH) and plant width (PW), and green matter yield (GMY), dry matter yield (DMY) and dry matter percentage (DM). The correlations were estimated, and path analysis was performed by the method proposed by Wright. GMY was strongly correlated with DMY, allowing indirect selection for this trait. NCl and ThCl had a direct effect on GMY and can be used for indirect selection or as secondary traits in the selection process. Given the lack of significant correlations between MS and DMY, it is possible to select a palm variety with high DMY and DM.

Marigolds have an important economic value which let to an increase production and cultivation being thus used in a wide range of fields. One of the basic elements regarding marigolds production is represented by anthodia with flowers and seeds determined by the blossom and the number of anthodium on the plant. The plant’s blossom is determined by the n umber of lingulate flowers from the external side of the anthodium where seeds grow. Calendula is a polymorphic species, forming during its evolution not only flowering, but also semi-flowering anthodia and simple flowers. In the experimental field of UASVM Timisoara we performed a series of research regarding the morphological features of six local population of marigold from the western part of the country. Flowers’ blooming proved to have a different evolution due to the influence manifested by the local population and also by the harvest results. This blooming phenomenon proved to highly influence the production elements. Blooming influence upon anthodia mass of seeds proved to be as similar as in case of anthodia with flowers. At the beginning of the harvest period, the anthodia mass of seeds proved to be maxim. According to the information collected during research, anthodia flowering fails to reestablish during harvest. The flowering process influences the number and the size of the seeds. Moreover, flowers blooming process may lead to the formation of homogenous seeds, not only in size, but also as regards their morphological aspect. The seeds from the flowering anthodia proved to be homogenous in comparison with other anthodia and had even better technological qualities.

Aim: Epidemiologic studies support the assumption (French paradox hypothesis) that drinking red wine is beneficial in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Our recent works however cast doubt on such claim. Earlier we have shown that the antithrombotic activity of various fruits and vegetables mainly depends on their varieties. For this reason, several varieties of red and white grapes were tested for antithrombotic effect in animal experiments. Results: Antithrombotic effect of 45 red and white grape varieties were assessed in the present study. Out of the 45, one red grape variety showed antithrombotic effect, while the majority of red and white grape varieties enhanced thrombosis. Conclusion: Most red and white grape varieties enhanced thrombotic activity of blood.
