The study of the propensity of young people to react aggressively (readiness for aggression) is relevant because it affects everyone and is the cause of many disasters, crimes, and the growth of aggressive behavior of young people, which are reflected in the statistics of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Scientists are trying to identify the reasons, factors contributing to the manifestation of aggressive forms of behavior among young people. However, no Russian research was found in which the influence of parenting practices (styles of education, methods of education) on the development of readiness for aggression among young people was studied in a comprehensive manner. The purpose of this research was to study the influence of family education practice on the development of readiness for aggression among young people. The experiment involved 237 people aged 18-24, who were randomly selected. Of these, 110 were girls and 127 were boys. All respondents were from complete families. The survey was carried out using the following methods: ‘The interpersonal behaviors inventory’, ‘Retrospective inventory of child rearing practices’, ‘Retrospective questionnaire of parenting styles’. The authors identified what forms of readiness for aggression are expressed among Russian youth, as well as gender characteristics. Emotional-Impulsive Readiness was found for girls and Habitual- Cognitive Readiness for boys. Mothers are perceived by young people as being more democratic while fathers, in the opinion of their children, used more often authoritarian and liberal (dismissive) parenting styles. The results of the study showed that mothers most often used positive and punitive parenting methods. College-educated fathers used positive parenting methods. The results obtained will be of interest for specialists working with families.

Family is the main pillar of child’s personality development. Elements of family life such as parenting style and parental attitudes profoundly affect the psychosocial and personality development of adolescents. Parenting style is a psychological construct representing standard strategies that parents use in child rearing. The quality of the relationship between parents and children are considered as the determining factor of adjustment, interpersonal interaction. Psychological and emotional atmosphere dominant on the family form the behavioral and personality characteristics of children. (Sarmast, 2006). Identity and personality formation during adolescence is profoundly influenced by the dyadic parent–child relationship. When parenting is dysfunctional, internalization and continuity of parental values become problematic. Various studies indicate that one of the most effective factors on the development and formation of adolescent personality is their parent’s parenting practices. (Belsky & Barrendz 2008; Prinzich et. al. 2004). The present study investigates two dimensions of parental style, “Care & overprotection” on adolescent personality.  Personality development Index by K.V. Kaliappan & S. Karithikeyan and parental bonding instrument by Gordon Parker, Hilary Tupling are the tools used.  The relationship and outcome of each dimension of parenting style will be discussed with personality of adolescent.  SPSS package will be used for statistical analysis.

The purpose of the study was to examine the relations between authoritative and authoritarian parenting styles and social and school adjustment in Chinese children. A sample of second grade children, aged eight years, and their parents in Beijing, People’s Republic of China, participated in this study. The children were group administered a peer assessment measure of social behaviour and a sociometric nomination measure. Teachers completed a rating scale on school-related social competence and problems for each child. Data concerning child-rearing practices were obtained from parents. In addition, information on children’s academic and social competence was obtained from school records. It was found that authoritarian parenting was associated positively with aggression and negatively with peer acceptance, sociability-competence, distinguished studentship and school academic achievement. In contrast, parental authoritative style was associated positively with indices of social and school adjustment and negatively with adjustment problems. The results indicated that, inconsistent with the argument in the literature (e.g. Steinberg, Dornbusch, & Brown, 1992), authoritative and authoritarian parenting practices were relevant to social and academic performance in Chinese children.

A large body of empirical work has shown the role that parenting plays in the development of prosocial behaviors of children. Parenting styles (e.g., democratic versus authoritarian) and parenting practices (e.g., inductive discipline versus guilt-shame induction) in particular have been empirically linked to prosocial behaviors as well as numerous other well-being indicators in children. What is less understood is the role that culture and cultural context might play in the parenting-prosocial nexus. This chapter explores the contributions of culture comparative and in-depth cultural studies of parenting and children’s prosocial behaviors. These studies extend the range of variability of parenting dimensions and contexts as they relate to children’s prosocial outcomes – providing a means of testing the generalizability of theory in a wider range of settings, as well as in identifying facets of parenting and family life that may otherwise be neglected in current scholarship. Collectively, studies support traditional socialization theories and show how numerous parenting dimensions are linked to prosocial outcomes in children in several cultural communities. Nonetheless, emerging research suggests culturally embedded processes that impact upon the parenting and prosocial link - meriting closer attention for future scholarship.

Positive parenting programs are a key strategy to promote the development of parental competence. We designed a pilot study based on parental self-efficacy to promote healthy lifestyles in their children aged between 2 to 5 years old. In this pilot study, we aimed to assess the effects of a parenting program on parental self-efficacy and parenting styles. Twenty-five parents were allocated into intervention (N = 15) and control group (N = 10). Parents from the intervention group received four group sessions (120 mi per session) to develop a positive parenting, parenting styles and parenting skills regarding to children’s diet, exercise, and screen time, and two additional sessions about child development and family games. Parents from the control group received these two latter sessions. Parental self-efficacy, parenting styles, and meal-related parenting practices were measured before and after the intervention and at 3-month follow-up. Acceptability and feasibility of the program was also measured. Quantitative data were analyzed using the repeat measures ANOVA and ANCOVA tests and the effect size calculation. Content analysis was used to analyse open questions. Positive trends were found regarding parental self-efficacy and the use of authoritative parenting style. Parents also reported a great acceptability of the program getting high satisfaction. According to the feasibility barriers and facilitators aspects were identified. The positive trends founded in this study support the development of parenting programs to promote healthy lifestyle in children.

AbstractInternational studies have shown effects of family relations on Internet addiction in young people. This research aimed to outline a discriminant profile of young people classified as dependent and not dependent on the Internet regarding to socio-biodemographic variables to parenting practices, parent-child conflict and interparental conflict. The sample consisted of 200 students (152 girls and 48 boys), between 15 and 24 years of age, 85.5% reside in Rio Grande do Sul and 14.5% in other Brazilian states. Participants responded individually to the protocol available online. The results showed that interparental conflict, parent-child conflict and the educational practice of supervision of paternal behavior discriminate dependents on Internet. The educational practice of maternal emotional support was the only discriminating variable for non-dependents. These national findings corroborate the international context studies and reinforce the importance of including the family in promotion and prevention of mental health of young people.

Background: Families of children with disabilities otherwise experience higher stress; and relation between parenting styles and coping of children is well known. Parental factors and family functioning may play a role in shaping the child, especially having issues like SLD. The objective is to study was coping strategies of children with SLD, parenting styles of their parents, their family functioning and relation of these with each other.Methods: It is a cross-sectional study undertaken after Institutional Ethics Committee approval, parent’s consent and child’s assent. Participants were 100 consecutive children, diagnosed with SLD, 9-13 years of age. Tools used were: Semi-structured proforma, Parenting Practices Questionnaire, Family Assessment Device and Children’s Coping Strategies Checklist Revision 1.Results: Authoritarian parenting style was significantly was associated with less use of ‘active’ and ‘support seeking’; and increased use of ‘distraction’ and ‘avoidance’ strategies. High scores on Authoritative style was associated with ‘active’ and ‘support seeking’ strategies. Avoidance coping strategy was associated with poor (high scores) and active coping strategies with higher (low scores) on problem solving, communication, and general family functioning.Conclusions: Parenting practices and family functioning can be pivotal in determining child’s attitude and coping. Assessment of this can be routinely included in child evaluation.

As the internet becomes increasingly integrated into everyday life, there is a growing concern on the antecedents that contribute to some of the adverse effects such as internet addiction. Parents are important and influential agents, and their parenting practices may promote or prevent the development of internet-related problems. This chapter provides a review of family factors surrounding child internet addiction such as parental monitoring and parental guidance, parental mediation, internet parenting styles, parental norms and behaviors, parent and child characteristics, family functioning and parent marital conflict, quality of the parent-child and peer relationship and culture as highlighted in previous research. Common limitations on past research on family factors and child internet addiction are noted and future research directions are suggested. Finally, family-based solutions and recommendations to prevent children from developing internet addiction are provided in the light of previous findings.

Migrant families who settle in host cultures may find themselves in situations of vulnerability which hinder the exercise of their parental responsibilities. While there are many support programs targeted at these families, they are n ot always sensitive to the acculturation process. This article compares beliefs about child-rearing and development in Spain and Peru, with the aim of enabling interventions to be adapted to the cultural characteristics of Peruvian families living in Spain. To this end, 43 Spanish and 39 Peruvian professionals and parents participated in a Delphi process, in which they ranked issues corresponding to four topics: child and adolescent needs, functions of the family context, functions of the school context, and the value of childhood and adolescence for society. The results revealed many similarities and some differences between the cultural parenting knowledge of Spanish and Peruvian families. The implications of these results for adapting parenting support programs to migrant Peruvian families are discussed. Specifically, the article concludes that Peruvian families require special support in two areas: establishing rules and limits for children and parental involvement in the school, both of which are key aspects for promoting parenting practices which are better adapted to the families’ new cultural context.

This chapter poses the question of how young people can be engaged politically both during and between elections. It begins with a discussion of the role of contact and interactions between citizens and policymakers in contemporary democracies, which spring from civic republican conceptions of good and active citizens. It asserts that the civic republican models of citizen-to-state relations are unlikely to work without the intensification of policy engagement at a local level. While small-scale, everyday democracy is a promising pathway to political engagement, contact with politicians and public officials has been overwhelmingly the preserve of those who are predominantly middle-aged, college-educated and financially well-off. To raise the involvement of young people, any localized approach to youth engagement must be scaffolded by political and social institutions: primarily, local government, schools and universities. The chapter goes on to consider the performance of a number of local and national initiatives to engage younger citizens in the policy process and reflect upon the lessons from these experiences.

The chapter introduces the reader to the book's argument, themes, broader context, and methodological considerations. It discusses the central thesis, which is in two parts. First, between the 1920s and the late 1960s the culture of parenting progressed away from being characterized mainly by disciplinary attitudes towards one that was increasingly psychoanalytically informed and, particularly from the 1940s through to the early 1970s, also began to emphasize liberal social democratic ideals. Second, from the 1970s to the present, under the influence of neoliberalism, feminism, social liberation (permissiveness and identity politics), and structural economic/political reconfigurations, the social democratic ideal declined and popular child-rearing came to be represented by 'authoritative' ('tough love') parenting styles reflecting neoliberal and narcissistic values expressed through a form of adult-child relations governed by childism - 'a prejudice against children.’
