Nowadays, information technology on planting calendar and fertilizer dosage remains research challenges, in Indonesia, especially for end user farmers. Integration of the planting calendar (then called as KATAM – ‘Kalender Tanam’), has raised many benefits for users since it provides the basic recommendations for seed and fertilizer needs. This research aims to validate the benefit of using Integrated KATAM as guidance for rice planting and fertilizing in Bangak Village, Banyudono Sub-district, with an area of around 6,100 m2. Two different approaches was performed: (i) interviewing farmers about planting date, variety, growth phase, water resource, and their technology to anticipate climate change, and (ii) calculating the rice productivity under different planting date, planting pattern, fertilizer dosage, and variety. Two treatments were used simultaneously on the field within the same planting calendar based on KATAM. The first treatment was a combination of planting date and fertilizer dosage for Situ Bagendit variety, while the second was two fertilizer dosages applied on two rice varieties (Ciherang and Situ Bagendit).  Field activity was held on May-August and June-September 2016. The results found that around 60% of the farmers in Banyudono Sub-district did not applied the integrated KATAM recommendation on planting time. During a year of validation period (2016), 80% of the farmers applied the rice-rice-rice pattern, and the remaining applied rice-rice-palawija. Our findings revealed that most farmers preferred to use Situ Bagendit variety as its higher tolerance to drought and higher potential yield. By applying KATAM recommendation, Situ Bagendit rice variety gave the highest productivity up to 8.89 ton/ha compared to other rice varieties. Further the research highlights the use of KATAM recommendation may increase rice productivity especially when Situ Bagendit is applied.

Photosensitive rice varieties have higher advantages in delayed planting. The present study was undertaken to figure out the degrees of delayed planting and evaluate the performance of six modern Aman rice varieties (BR11, BR22, BR23, BRRI dhan46, BRRI dhan54) against three sets of delayed planting. Each rice variety showed considerable variations for plant height, days to panicle initiation, flowering and maturity. BR22, BR23, and BRRI dhan54 showed a drastic reduction in days to panicle initiation and varied from 65 to 58 days, 69 to 60 days, and 62 to 55 days respectively, while it varied from 76 to 80 days for the control variety BR11. Similarly, days to flowering of BR22 and BRRI dhan54 showed a gradual decrease following different planting time and varied from 92 to 86 days, and 83 to 77 days respectively, while it varied from 109 to 107 days for the control variety BR11. For the above traits, BRRI dhan44 and BRRI dhan46 showed a moderate reduction depending on the three sets of planting time. Grain yield of BR22, BR23 reduced at the third set with a value ranging from 5.8 to 5.0 t/ha, 6.1 to 5.1 t/ha respectively, while BRRI dhan54 showed consistency in grain yield with a range from 5.3 to 5.2 t/ha. In contrast, grain yield of remaining rice varieties ranged between 5.7 to 4.5 t/ha for BRRI dhan46, 6.2 to 3.9 t/ha for BRRI dhan46 while severe reduction for the control variety BR11 with a range from 4.4 to 2.0 t/ha was observed. In conclusion, BRRI dhan54 was found more suitable rice variety in delayed planting compared with other photosensitive rice varieties. In future, BRRI dhan54 could be used as benchmark rice variety in a special rice breeding programme designed for delayed planting. Bangladesh Rice j. 2019, 23(1): 65-72

<p><strong>Morphology Performances and Yield of New Superior</strong><strong> Rice Variety with Integrated Crop Management in Rainfedland Jepara District</strong>. One constraint for increasing rice production in rainfedland Jepara District is the availability of adaptive improved rice varieties with high yield. The purpose of this assessment are: (1) to analyze the morphological performance and yield potential of some new superior varieties in rainfedland Jepara District (2) to assess the level of main rice pest and diseases attack and the presence of natural pest’s enemies, and (3) to assess the responses and perceptions of farmers towards integrated crop management applications in rice production. The assessment was conducted in ranfedland Mayong Kidul Village, Mayong Sub-district, Jepara District by involving Lestari Farmer’s Group on the second planting season of 2015. The assessment also employed A Randomized Block Design with three replications and rice variety as treament: Inpari-30, Inpari-31, Inpari-10, Conde, mekongga and varietas Ciherang as the control variety.  The collected data of morphology and rice yield were analyzed using analysis of variance,  then the mean difference values between treatments was further tested using the least significant difference test at p = 0.05. The results showed that there were influences of rice varieties on plant height, number of tillers, pests and diseaces as well as yield and yield component of the five rice varieties. The Mekongga variety is the most suitable rice variety that could be used in rainfedland in order to improve rice productivity in rainfedland of Jepara District. This variety could produce dry rice grain up to 6.8 tons/ha, with 105.5 cm plant height, 14.1 productive tillers, 23.7 cm panicle length 566 and 176 number of filled and empty grains 5 panicles respectively, 4.5 pest and diceases attack level, and is able to increase grain yield up to 30.7% compared to that of control variety. Respondent farmers have a positive perception to the concept of integrated crop management with a value of 68.3%. Tujuan pengkajian ini adalah (1) mengkaji keragaan morfologi dan potensi hasil beberapa VUB padi di lahan sawah tadah hujan (2) mengkaji tingkat serangan hama dan penyakit utama padi serta keberadaan musuh alami hama, dan (3) mengkaji respon dan persepsi petani terhadap penerapan PTT padi. Pengkajian dilakukan di lahan sawah tadah hujan Desa Mayong Kidul Kecamatan Mayong Kabupaten Jepara, Kelompok Tani Lestari pada musim tanam ke-2 tahun 2015<em>. </em>Pengkajian ini menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok dengan tiga ulangan dan sebagai perlakuan adalah varietas padi: Inpari-30, Inpari-31, Inpari-10, Conde dan mekongga serta varietas Ciherang sebagai pembanding. Data yang terkumpul dianalisis menggunakan analisis varian (anova), selanjutnya perbedaan nilai tengah antar perlakuan diuji lanjut menggunakan uji beda nyata terkecil (BNT) pada p=0.05. Hasil pengkajian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat pengaruh nyata varietas padi terhadap tinggi tanaman, jumlah anakan, perkembangan OPT, hasil dan komponen hasil gabah dari kelima varietas tanaman padi yang diuji. Varietas Mekongga merupakan VUB padi yang paling sesuai ditanam di lokasi pengkajian dalam rangka meningkatkan produktivitas padi. Varietas ini menghasilkan gabah kering giling hingga 6.8 ton/ha, tinggi tanaman 105.5 cm, jumlah anakan produktif 14.1, panjang malai  23.7 cm, jumlah gabah bernas 566 butir  per 5 malai, jumlah gabah hampa 176 gabah hampa per 5 malai dan tingkat serangan OPT 4,5%, serta  mampu meningkatkan hasil gabah hingga 30.7% dibanding kontrol. Petani juga memiliki persepsi positif terhadap konsep PTT dengan nilai mencapai 68.3%. Implikasi hasil kajian ini adalah pemanfaatan VUB padi terutama Mekongga memiliki potensi tinggi dalam meningkatkan produktivitas padi di lahan sawah tadah hujan Kabupaten Jepara.</p><p><strong> </strong><strong>Kata kunci</strong>: <em>VUB padi, tadah hujan, PTT, Jepara</em></p><p> </p>

The most effective method to increase rice productivity in one location is to adapt the best combination between the high yielding rice variety and the optimum plant spacing. The objectives of this experiment to observe plant growth characteristic of each high yielding rice variety under each plant spacing to increase rice productivity. Field experiment was conducted at Toroh Regency, Grobogan District, Central Java during 2014 dry season. Treatments were arranged according to a split plot design, with three replications. The main plots (Plant spacings), namely T1- Equal spacing/Tegel 25 cm x 25 cm; T2- Legowo 2:1 (25---50) cm x 12,5 cm; T3- legowo 4:1 empty (25 – 50) cm x 12,5 cm dan T4- legowo 4:1 full (25 – 50) cm x 12,5 cm. The sub plots (variety): Ciherang, Inpari 10, Inpari 15 and Inpari 16.<br />The yields of the rice varieties in this experiment are highly significantly different. It was found one introduced variety produced higher yield than Ciherang, namely Inpari 16 (5.93 + 0.43 ton 14% dry grain/ha). The two other introduced varieties (Inpari 10 and Inpari 15), produced 5.03 + 0.19 and 5.00 + 0.22 ton 14% dry grain/ha, the same or slightly lower than Ciherang. The highest yield occurred when Inpari 16 planted using Legowo 4 : 1 empty, namely 6.57 ton 14% dry grain/ha, consistently produces higher yield than the other varieties do at each plant spacing treatment. Rice yields of Ciherang were relatively more stable under different plant spacings compared with the other varieties. Inpari 10 at harvest stage having 19 tillers per hill under equal spacing 25 cm x 25 cm, decreased to 12 tillers per hill under Legowo 4 : 1 full. Ciherang with the medium size of grains have 1000 grain weight of 23.9 gram, and Inpari 10 25.3 gram. Based on the results of this experiment it is concluded that Inpari 16 planted under Jajar Legowo 4 : 1 empty (25 – 50) cm x 12.5 cm is the best. However, it is suggested to be evaluated acceptability by the local farmers.

An experiment was conducted at Jessore to observe the effect of planting date and variety on the yield of late planting tomato. The potentiality of fruiting in the late season were evaluated for BARI tomato 4, 5, 6 and 12 by planting December 01, December 16, January 01, January 16 and February 01. A combination of December 01 planting with BARI Tomato 5 variety performed better in respect of yield (57.07 t/ha). The variety BARI Tomato 5 also showed potential fruiting capability during late winter season and February 01 planting produced 11 ton/ha of potential yield. Advancement in agricultural technologies is seen to result in the shift in production functions. The study was conducted to establish the impact of the improved rice variety on productivity in the Ejura-Sekyedumase and Atebubu-Amantin Municipalities of Ghana. The study was based on the survey of 208 rice farmers using a three-stage stratified sampling method. The study used a structured questionnaire to collect input-output data from the rice farmers. Data were analysed using the Cobb-Douglas production function. The study found that the technical change associated with the introduction of the improved rice variety was of the non-neutral type. Further, the adoption of the improved rice variety has increased rice productivity by about 46% for the adopters. The main determinants of productivity for the adopters were seed, land, fertiliser, herbicide, and education. Productivity among the non-adopters was positively influenced by seed, land, herbicide, and fertiliser. The study concluded that the improved rice variety has superior yield advantage. The study recommends for the simultaneous promotion of improved rice varieties and their recommended inputs to increase rice productivity.

Aims: Diabetes rates are especially high in China. Risk of Type 2 diabetes increases with high intakes of white rice, a staple food of Chinese people. Ethnic differences in postprandial glycaemia have been reported. We compared glycaemic responses to glucose and five rice varieties in people of European and Chinese ethnicity and examined possible determinants of ethnic differences in postprandial glycaemia. Methods: Self-identified Chinese (n = 32) and European (n = 31) healthy volunteers attended on eight occasions for studies following ingestion of glucose and jasmine, basmati, brown, Doongara® and parboiled rice. In addition to measuring glycaemic response, we investigated physical activity levels, extent of chewing of rice and salivary α-amylase activity to determine whether these measures explained any differences in postprandial glycaemia. Results: Glycaemic response, measured by incremental area under the glucose curve, was over 60% greater for the five rice varieties (P < 0.001) and 39% greater for glucose (P < 0.004) amongst Chinese compared with Europeans. The calculated glycaemic index was approximately 20% greater for rice varieties other than basmati (P = 0.01 to 0.05). Ethnicity [adjusted risk ratio 1.4 (1.2-1.8) P < 0.001] and rice variety were the only important determinants of incremental area under the glucose curve. Conclusions: Glycaemic responses following ingestion of glucose and several rice varieties are appreciably greater in Chinese compared with Europeans, suggesting the need to review recommendations regarding dietary carbohydrate amongst rice-eating populations at high risk of diabetes. © 2012 Diabetes UK.

Rice breeding priorities in Africa often focus on agronomic gains. However, being a net importer of rice, the continent’s varietal replacement success also crucially hinges on new varieties’ market competitiveness vis-à-vis imports. Markets have been profoundly shaped by cultural and colonial heritage. Indigenous preferences for African rice can be traced back to ancient rice domestication and have been subsequently influenced by Asian rice import standards as a result of colonial import substitution policies. New Rice for Africa (NERICA) crosses between African and Asian rice species have the potential to reconcile these dual indigenous/import preferences, but little is known about their market competitiveness. We use auction market data to assess the intrinsic and extrinsic consumer value of NERICA in The Gambia relative to two market standards: branded, Asian rice imports and the most popular locally grown Asian rice variety. We categorize rice consumers into four market segments, based on their heritage as evidenced by their preferences and genealogical lineages. NERICA outperforms both Asian rice standards in terms of market competitiveness, and its value is further reinforced by colonial heritage and labeling, but somewhat weakened by cultural heritage. Consumers were found to pay price premiums for NERICA in the range of 5% to 22% relative to Asian rice imports, with the highest premiums offered by consumers with colonial heritage, representing 86% of the sample. Maintaining and expanding this market will require breeders to incorporate trait mixes that reconcile agronomic gains and consumer preferences induced by cultural and colonial heritage.

Pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) severely reduces rice grain yield, significantly affects grain quality, and leads to substantial economic loss. In this study, we aimed to characterize the physicochemical properties and processing quality of the Garumi 2 flour rice variety under PHS conditions and compare them with those of the Seolgaeng, Hangaru, Shingil, and Ilpum rice varieties and the Keumkang wheat variety. Analysis of the molecular structure of starch revealed uniform starch granules, increased proportions of short-chain amylopectin in DP 6–12 (51.0–55.3%), and enhanced crystallinity (30.7–35.7%) in rice varieties for flour compared with the Ilpum cooking rice variety. PHS significantly altered the starch structure and gelatinization properties of Garumi 2. It also caused surface pitting and roughness in Garumi 2 starch granules and decreased their crystallinity. Collectively, the findings of this study provide important novel insights into the effects of PHS on the physicochemical properties of Garumi 2 floury rice for flour.

Rice consumed as white cooked polished grain has been considered a high glycemic index (GI) food, particularly compared with other starchy foods. However, the GI levels of rice based food can vary among different rice types and food processing technologies. Rice GI variation can be affected by several factors, such as rice variety, the genetic background of rice as well as due to crop edaphoclimatic conditions. The main difference in rice starch composition that influences GI is the amylose content. Besides the chemical composition of rice, the gelatinization characteristics and food processing can also contribute to starch retrogradation, thus increasing the level of resistant starch with a great influence on GI. To understand the glycemic response of rice types differing in amylose and viscosity profiles, four rice samples were analyzed and compared with standard and resistant HI-MAIZE corn starches. An in vitro enzymatic starch hydrolysis procedure was applied to estimate GI. The results indicate substantial differences in the starch hydrolysis of the two corn starches. Starch hydrolysis tended to be more rapid and efficient for ‘Waxy’ and ‘Ceres’ (intermediate-amylose) rice types than for ‘Maçarico’ (high-amylose rice). In addition, the data show that the Maçarico variety has the lowest estimated GI and the highest retrogradation rate compared with ‘Waxy’, ‘Ceres’ and ‘Basmati’ type. The results obtained reinforce the importance of knowing amylose content and viscosity profiles for the prediction of rice glycemic responses.
