This article seeks to explore the discourse-semantics of two selected excerpts from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah with a focus on reference chains study. The choice to focus on studying reference chains in the selected excerpts aims at first appraising the way Adichie has used them to realize texture within her studied texts. It second aims at finding the extent to which references have contributed to the encoding of underlying meanings therein. To arrive at this, the research has appealed to the mixed quantitative and qualitative methodology. Through the quantitative methodology, the data obtained after analyses have been summarized organized and presented statistically in an informative way. The qualitative methodology ensued has allowed to give sense to the most interpretable data collected. Indeed, the research has interestingly arrived at impressive results. Among several others, the research has revealed that the studied texts are highly cohesive with endophoric references largely predominating over the other reference types. Using such cohesive ties as Adichie has done, has allowed her texts not only to stick together but also to be highly readable and flow logically. Moreover, the extensive use of endophoric references, as witnessed in the studied texts, is revelatory of their mode which is archetypal of a monologic written text. In other respects, the considerable number of exophoric references in the first excerpt reveals its tenor dimension. Such a linguistic feature indicates that it was produced in a context of immediate face-to-face feedbacks with language accompanying action. On the other hand, the fewer number of the same reference type in the second excerpt reveals its field and unveils that it is a written reflective text reconstructing an experience. Drawing upon the theoretically founded analysis of the selected excerpts and the interpretation of the collected data arrived at, the research opens up to such further investigation areas of the systemic functional linguistics as the interpersonal meaning, the experiential meaning, and the textual meaning.

<p>My name is Salma Meléndez and I am currently a graduate in Agrogenomic Sciences. In March 2020, when COVID-19 was detected in Mexico, I was in my eighth semester of my undergraduate degree. At that time, he had an experiment of overexpression of a gene in bean roots, in order to explore its function during symbiosis with rhizobial bacteria. Unfortunately, the laboratory and the entire campus canceled their face-to-face activities in order to reduce the risk of contagion. An alternative was to take the experimental plants to my house to give the proper care, however, the situation became difficult as I did not have the space or the required conditions at home. On the other hand, other research centers with which we had collaboration agreements also canceled access, such is the case of the Optical Research Center, where we used the confocal microscope to detect subcellular location of proteins. The closure of institutions allowed me to write theoretical parts of my thesis, however, the experimental phase was definitely affected for at least six months. The experiment with the plants was almost completely lost. In the subsequent months I had the opportunity to re-enter my institution; however, under strict conditions and on staggered days, which made certain measurements that require daily continuity difficult. Currently, the laboratory is not as it used to look, full of colleagues sharing results and difficulties, exchanging advice and even certain materials. I think the pandemic has pushed us to do our work more individually and slowly. Consequently, my degree was delayed and transferred from 2020 to 2021. There are still many challenges to overcome, although activities have not been fully restored, science does not stop and we have found a way to face it, slowly but surely.</p>

My aim in this article is to develop a possible understanding of Adorno’s thoughts on musical interpretation as they appear in a collection of fragments posthumously published in 2001 under the title of Zu einer Theorie der musikalischen Reproduktion [Towards a Theory of Musical Reproduction]. I do this by using an actual sounding example, with emphasis on the dialectical relationship between the written text and the sounding realization. On the one hand, I use a passage by Beethoven (Symphony No. 1, First Movement) that is characterized by some philological uncertainties regarding articulation, explained in slightly different ways in three so-called Urtext-editions of the score. On the other hand, I use a recorded interpretation of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Austrian Nikolaus Harnoncourt. I will argue that, in this performance, Harnoncourt’s articulation of the actual passage provides a useful illustration of the tension between text and sound. Moreover, as the interpretation is also musically intriguing, it seems to function as a thought-provoking example of the dialectical relationship which for Adorno characterizes a successful musical interpretation. Thus, the article aims to shed light on both Adorno’s somewhat intricate speculations and Harnoncourt’s personal practice of interpretation.

This study aimed at exploring the reality of  communication between parents and the schools of their children in addition to investigating the parents’ attitudes towards using the Internet services  to  communicate with the schools at the basic elementary stage in Nablus Directorate /Palestine. Furthermore, the study aimed at examining the effect of  some variables on these attitudes. To achieve these objectives, the descriptive method was employed by means of a questionnaire used to collect data. The sample of the study consisted of 120 parents chosen through the cluster-regional-randomized design. Results indicated that all parents support the importance of communication with the schools of  their children, and that (61.7%) of them strongly support this communication, while (42.5%) of the parents’ responses showed that they “sometimes “ communicate with the schools because of  some obstacles revealed in this study. The study results also showed that the most common way of communication with school was the personal face-to –face visit which scored (84.2%) among the parents . Only (1.7%) of the parents  revealed that they do not communicate with the school. On the other hand, (93.3%) indicated that they want to increase the extent of their communication with the schools through providing more effective and easier means of communication. The results also revealed that parents’ attitudes towards using the Internet services  to  communicate with the schools of their children were high (82.4%),  and there were no statistically significant differences  in their attitudes due to the variables of  gender, age and the daily use of  Internet services among the parents, while there were statistically significant differences  in these attitudes that can be attributed to the differences between the parents with regard to their estimation of the importance of communication with schools in addition to the differences between them with regard to their desire to increase the extent of their communication by using more effective and easier means.

TRUMP VS JOKOWI: EXPLORING THE LEXICOGRAMMATICAL VARIATION OF HEAD OF STATES’ TWITTER COMMUNICATION Putu Nur AyomiUniversitas Mahasaraswati Denpasaremail: [email protected] Abstract Unlike other social media such as Facebook or Instagram, which is usually used to connect people and maintain relationships, Twitter focuses on information sharing. This makes Twitter an ideal platform to discuss ideas and generate conversations around particular issues. This article explores and compares the lexicogrammatical choices made by President Donald Trump and Joko Widodo in a selection of their tweets. Guided by Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), this article explains the stylistic differences and their implications in the three metafunctions: ideational, interpersonal, and textual, including the language used for evaluation drawn from the Appraisal system network. The study reveals that Trump’s language is more spoken-like than that of Jokowi’s. Trump also employs various appraisal strategies to negatively evaluate his opponents and counter various adverse accusations addressed to him. Jokowi, on the other hand, uses more abstract written-like language and use more positive appraisal strategies mainly addressed to his government programs and plans amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The result of the study reveals that different individual lexicogrammatical choices can generate diverse representations and images.

NMIJ / AIST has been disseminating the national torque standard to Japanese industry by using deadweight type torque standard machines (DWTSMs). In general, DWTSMs can generate more precise torque than other types of TSMs. On the other hand, the calibration takes much longer time than others. One possible solution is to use a reference type torque calibration machine (RTCM). RTCMs have been developed in some national metrology institutes (NMIs). We have started the development of the first RTCM in the range of 100 mN · m to 10 N · m. In this study, we developed the automatic calibration system of the RTCM and investigated the calibration procedures for a low nominal capacity torque measuring device (TMD). It was found that the calibration could be realised by the RTCM, compared with the reliable DWTSM of rated capacity of 10 N · m at NMIJ.

<p>The present paper analyses which strategies are used in order to express the personal/inanimate pronoun contrast that serves the function of (de)humanizing zombies, when passages containing this linguistic feature in English are translated into Spanish. English has two sets of pronouns/adjectives, the ones that express personhood (he/his/him, she/her), and the inanimate ones (it/its). The explicit use of these pronouns is obligatory. Spanish on the other hand, has one set of pronouns (él, ella, su, lo, la) that are used both to express personhood as well as with inanimate references. The Spanish subject pronouns are normally used only when there is a need to highlight the subject or contrast it with another subject. Consequently, translators from English to Spanish face a challenge with regard to the translation of the (de)humanizing effect the pronoun contrast adds to the texts in English. The corpus contains examples of the English pronouns being translated with noun phrases, verb phrases, noun clauses, and pronouns, while in some cases the pronoun contrast is omitted, and therefore lost in the translation.</p>

Complementary and alternative medicine refers to the use and benefit of non-allopathic medicines, which is presently increasing in Western societies. This study, on one hand, shows the presence and the form that this new fashion among the population adopts. On the other hand, it shows the spatial distribution of the tendency in CAM. This refers to its distribution according to neighborhoods and metropolitan territories. For this purpose, the city of Seville, Spain, a middle European city present in the network of global cities, has been selected for this study. To show this sociological reality, quantitative methodology has been conducted within two years beginning from 2013 to 2014. The database that was created provided information about the offer of the CAM, specifically 100 different practices related with the complementary and alternative medicine of 450 Centers and professionals. This is with a total of 1338 number of answers.

It is well known that if a Leyden jar be discharged through a vacuum-tube, the discharge generally takes the form of an unbroken column of light, extending from the point of the positive terminal to the hilt of the negative, i. e. to the extreme negative end of the tube, and that it shows no trace of either negative glow or intervening dark space. On the other hand I have found, by experiments with a large Leyden battery, that if a tube have one terminal connected with the negatively charged coating of the battery and the other held beyond striking-distance from the positively charged coating, the discharge in the tube will show a separation of the positive from the negative part by a dark intervening space. Under suitable circumstances of exhaustion it will also show striae, in the same manner as when the discharge is effected directly with a Holtz machine, having the conductors either closed or open beyond striking-distance (see Roy. Soc. Proceedings, vol. xxiii. p. 460). Again, I have found, with the same battery, that if the tube be connected otherwise as before, and held at a distance less than at first, but a little greater than striking-distance, a stratified discharge much more brilliant and more like that produced by a coil will be exhibited. It should be remarked that the latter form of discharge appears to the unassisted eye, in the cases which I have examined, as an unbroken column of light, but with a negative glow and dark space. A revolving mirror, however, resolves the column into a regular array of striae, having a rapid proper motion towards the positive terminal. The transition from the first to the second of these forms, and from the second to the jar-discharge proper when the tube was brought within striking-distance, was, if not absolutely abrupt, at all events so rapid that this form of experiment gave no prospect of following one form into the other. "With a view to examining the transition as closely as possible a Holtz machine was employed, and the jars having been taken off, a pair of mica plates partially covered with tinfoil was used in their stead. By sliding one plate over the other, so that more or less of the covered parts were brought face to face, a jar was formed the size of which could be varied at pleasure. An air-spark of adjustable length was also introduced into the circuit between the machine and the tube.

This paper will explore the tropical exotic in relation to the widespread European fascination with tropical animals exhibited in zoos throughout the long nineteenth century. Zoos became places where human animals could experience the chill of a backbone shiver as they came face to face with the animal/other. It will examine the establishment of the first zoos in relation to Harriet Ritvo’s argument that their major imperative was one of classification and control. On the one hand, the zoo fulfilled the public’s desire for wild, exotic creatures while, on the other hand, the zoo reassured the public that its major purpose was control of the natural world encapsulated by the stereotype of tropical excess. I will argue that these various places of exhibition created an uncanny zone in which the European subject was able to encounter its animal self while reaffirming an anthropocentric world view.
