The traditional medicinal plants are believed to be an impotent source of phytochemicals with potential therapeutic effects, and caring for different diseases. The plant Solanum surattense has active phytochemicals like saponins, alkaloid, phenols, solamargine, solasurine, solasonine, gum, ascorbic acid, sterols, torvoside K, torvoside L, khasianine, glycosides, flavonoids, aculeatiside A, solamargine, glycoalkaloid, steroidal compound, steroidal alkaloids, polyphenol (caffeic acid), coumarins (esculentin and aesculin), steroids (carpesterol, campesterol, daucosterol, stigmasterol, cycloortanol, and cholesterol), triterpinins, and sapogenin. This medicinal plant is widespread in pharmaceutics and still presents a large source of active phytochemicals with different activity such as antimicrobial, anti-larvicidal, anthelmintic, antimalarial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-asthmatic, and anti-cancerous. This review of the literature revealed new researches on the phytochemicals of S. surattense that how the active phytochemicals are performed different activities on the molecular level in vital aspects.

The indigenous knowledge of the Basotho makes it simple for this speech community to name their traditional medicinal plants in such a way that they are meaningful; this could also be viewed as an empowerment technique, especially in the economic sphere. Their medicinal plants names seem to be idiomatic and to express certain philosophies of the Basotho society. Creativity is observable in this kind of naming, and many names allude to the kind of remedy that is associated with the medicinal plant. It is therefore the interest of this paper to consider the names of medical plants among the Basotho whose names allude to the remedy they provide. The names of Sesotho medicinal plants and the reasoning of the Basotho in general behind the name and the use of each medicinal plant will be discussed in this article. This paper will further preserve and promote the use of Basotho traditional medicines for the future generation.

This study was carried out to investigate the indigenous use and pharmacological activity of traditional medicinal plants of Mount Taibai, China. Pharmacological data were collected by conducting informal interviews with local experienced doctors practicing traditional Chinese medicine and via open-ended questionnaires on villagers. We conclude that the residents of Mt. Taibai possess rich pharmacological knowledge. This study may help identify high-value traditional medicinal plant species, promote economic development associated with local medicinal plants, and increase awareness from government departments.

Abstract Background In Ethiopia, traditional medicine based mainly on medicinal plants, has been used for centuries for the treatment of human and animal health problems. The objective of this study was to document medicinal plants used to treat human and domestic animals ailments as well as the associate indigenous knowledge and conservation methods in Raya Alamata District in Northern Ethiopia. Methods Ethno-botanical data were collected through semi-structured interviews, guided field walks, group discussions, field observations, preference ranking, paired comparison and direct matrix. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, informant consensus factor, and various ranking methods. Results The results showed 47 medicinal plant species belonging to 44 genera and 31 families. The plants were used to treat 27 human and 8 livestock diseases. Among others, members of Fabaceae were leading in terms of the number of medicinal plant species composition, consisting of 9 species. Of these species, the majority (53.19%) grew naturally in the wild. Herbs took the lead in terms of the number of plants used in the preparation of remedies, constituting 46.81% of the species, followed by shrubs that instituted 27.66%. Leaves were the most commonly used plant part, constituting 41.94% of the total uses, followed by roots, constituting 20.97%. Dermal route of administration was the most commonly used route of administration (43.55%), followed by oral route of administration (38.71%). Direct matrix ranking showed Balanites aegyptiaca L. as the most preferred multipurpose species in the community. Paired ranking indicated that Aloe megalacantha Bak. as the most commonly used medicinal plants for healing external wounds. Agricultural activity for new agricultural lands became seriously threatened medicinal plant resources. Many of the local communities with traditional medicinal knowledge gave priority to the immediate use of medicinal plants than to the sustainable uses. Particularly, the collection method of plants or plant parts for medicinal use is mostly destructive. Conclusion local communities heavily depend on traditional medicinal plants and associated knowledge for treating human and livestock ailments. However, medicinal plants and the associated knowledge are eroding mainly due to agricultural expansion, deforestation and land degradation for seeking new agricultural lands and firewood, as well as the unsustainable practices of plant or plant part sampling for medicinal values. Thus, public awareness needs to be raised among local communities and all other stakeholders on sustainable utilization and management of medicinal plant resources and associated knowledge. On the top of that ex-situ and in-situ conservation measures in particular should be taken for the sustainable management of medicinal plants and the indigenous knowledge.

ABSTRACTClerodenrum volubile is an important locally used medicinal plant. It is one of the essential herbs nature has provided for mankind to be consumed as spices, vegetable and also used in the treatment of diseases. Qualitative phytoconstituent screening of the plant revealed the presence of steroids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and phenolic compound while chalcones, alkaloid and anthraquinone were absent. Quantitative phytochemical evaluation showed values of 8.29±1.26mg/g rutin equivalent for flavonoids, 3.53±0.05mg/g gallic acid equivalent for phenol, 3.97±0.03mg/g tannic acid equivalent for tannins and 13.67±1.27% for saponin per dry weight. As it is imperative to extend research work on therapeutic effects of the arsenal of plants nature has given to us in Africa so as to obtain a cure for various diseases attacking human’s health, antioxidant properties of the plant was evaluated. Antioxidant models used include iron chelating, DPPH radical, superoxide ion, hydrogen peroxide, ABTS radical, hydroxyl radical scavenging activities and ferric ion reducing properties. The obtained IC50 values against DPPH radical were 141.342 and 120.349µg/mL for Clerodendrum volubile and trolox respectively. The chelating effect of the plant extract at 50% inhibition was close to that of ascorbic acid (standard) with 134.34 and 131.19µg/mL concentration respectively. Overall, the aqueous extract of the plant showed antioxidant potential which was close to the effects exerted by known standard antioxidants (ascorbic acid, trolox and EDTA). The plant could hence provide natural antioxidants which are needed to combat numerous free radical-mediated diseases and complications such as aging, cancer, atherosclerosis, which are linked with oxidative stress.

Most of the information regarding traditional medicinal plants are still in the hands of traditional vendors, and knowledge of vendors is either lost or passed orally from generation to next generation. This study aimed to survey and document the currently used plants by herbalists in Jeldu Woreda and record their medicinal usage and mode of preparation. Due to most of the vendors of traditional medicinal plants in Jeldu Woreda are alliterated, the data was gathered by supported questionnaire from both vendors and the users of this traditional medicinal plants. The study was limited to traditional medicinal plants which used to treat diseases related to skin, digestive system and circulatory system. The technique used to select the sample from the traditional medicinal plant venders was available sampling since the number of venders in the selected site is not large in number. Thus all the traditional medicinal plant venders in Jeldu Woreda were the respondents of the study. From selected research site about 21 medicinal plants vendorsand 47 users were participated in the study. The finding of the study concluded that there were some plants used to treat some human disease in Jeldu Woreda. Therefore, this research tried to document some medicinal plants used to treat human gastrointestinal, skin and other diseases by including the mode of preparation and how to apply. In this research about 68 respondents have participated. Out of those respondents, 21 were vendors of medicinal plants while 47 were users of medicinal plants. According to data from the medicinal plant vendors and users total of 26 plant species were identified with an identification of the plants’ part with medicinal value. Also, the modes of preparation and mode of application were described in this research. Among this plants species, more than half of them used to treat digestive system disease. From the 26 plant species about half of those plants were recorded for their ability to treat skin disease. The application of the prepared medicine on the skin is mostly by painting the liquidified medicine from plant on infected skin.

ABSTRACT Medicinal plants are plants that can be used as raw materials for traditional medicine, which if it consumed will increase immunity. Indonesian medicinal plants have a high contribution to world drug production. North Sumatra is one of the provinces producing a variety of traditional medicinal plants. There are 63.10% of Indonesian people choose self-medication and there are 21.41% of them take traditional medicine and 3.96% do other treatments. In less than 6 years from 2000 to 2006 there was an increase of the traditional medicine utilization reach of 23.10%.  This fact shows that traditional medicinal plants have a strong potential in improving the economy of North Sumatra Province. This study aims to determine (1) the development of traditional medicinal plant production, (2) the form of consumption of traditional medicinal plants, (3) the trade of traditional medicinal plants in North Sumatra, (4) the relationship between the exchange rate and the amount of exports of traditional medicinal plants. The research was carried out by literature study and quantitative approach study. The population and sample study was the people who use medicinal plant and traditional medicine in the province of Sumatra. The study also used secondary data from various sources about the use of traditional medicinal plants. The results of the study revealed that (1) Production of traditional medicinal plants (ginger, galangal, kencur, turmeric, lempuyang, temulawak, temuireng, temulawak, temukunci, cucumber, cardamom, Noni, crown of the gods, kejibeling, bitter and aloe vera) in North Sumatra Province from 2013-2017 were very fluctuatif (2) Consumption of traditional medicinal plants in the North Sumatra province from 2013-2017 has increased and the consumption was vary as follows of: traditional medicine ingredients and as raw material for the pharmaceutical industry, industry of traditional medicinal plants and microbusiness of medicinal plants traditional, (3) trade in traditional medicinal plants in the province of North Sumatra carried out between districts, provinces and international (export) (4) There is no relationship between international trade in medicinal plants with the exchange rate of the rupiah. Tanaman obat Indonesia memiliki kontribusi yang tinggi terhadap produksi obat dunia. Sumatera Utara merupakan salah satu provinsi penghasil aneka ragam tanaman obat tradisional. Data menyebutkan bahwa 63,10% masyarakat Indonesia memilih pengobatan sendiri, sebanyak 21,41% melakukan pengobatan tradisional dan 3,96% melakukan pengobatan lain. Dalam kurun waktu 6 tahun dari tahun 2000 sampai 2006 terjadi peningkatan penggunaan obat tradisional sebanyak 23,10%. Kondisi tersebut menunjukkan bahwa tanaman obat tradisional memiliki potensi yang kuat dalam meningkatkan perekonomian Provinsi Sumatera Utara. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui (1) perkembangan produksi tanaman obat tradisional, (2) bentuk konsumsi tanaman obat tradisional, (3) perdagangan tanaman obat tradisional di Sumatera Utara dan (4) hubungan antara nilai kurs dengan jumlah ekspor tanaman obat tradisional. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah studi literatur dan kuantitatif.  Populasi dan sampel penelitian merupakan masyarakat yang melakukan pengobatan secara tradisional di berbagai kabupaten yang ada di Provinsi Sumatera Utara dan juga menggunakan data sekunder dari berbagai sumber terkait penggunaan tanaman obat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) Produksi tanaman obat tradisional (jahe, lengkuas, kencur, kunyit, lempuyang, temulawak, temuireng, temulawak, temukunci, dringgo, kapulaga, mengkudu, mahkota dewa, kejibeling, sambiloto dan lidah buaya) di Provinsi Sumatera Utara mengalami fluktuasi dari tahun 2013-2017 (2) Konsumsi tanaman obat tradisional di Provinsi Sumatera Utara mengalami peningkatan dari tahun 2013-2017 dan konsumsi dilakukan dalam bentuk ramuan oleh masyarakat serta dijadikan sebagai bahan baku untuk industri farmasi, industri tanaman obat tradisional dan usaha mikro tanaman obat tradisional, (3) perdagangan tanaman obat tradisional di provinsi Sumatera Utara dilakukan antar kabupaten, provinsi dan internasional (ekspor) (4) Tidak ada hubungan antara perdagangan tanaman obat secara internasional dengan nilai kurs rupiah. Ethnobotanical study of traditional medicinal plants used by local people of Kondala Woreda was conducted from September 2016 to June 2017. The aim of the study was to collect, identify, describe, compile and document medicinal plant species used by the local people for the treatments of human and livestock ailments. A total of 49 informants from seven kebeles were selected. A total of 64 plant species were collected. Out of these, 78% of medicinal plant species were used as cure for human ailments, 12% of species for livestock and 10% of species for the treatment of both human and livestock. The most frequently used plant parts were leaves and roots. In the study area, there are threats to medicinal plants and firewood was ranked first by selected key informant followed by, agricultural expansion. Results indicated that Viciafaba is most effective in treating stomach ache while Cordia africana is used as multipurpose medicinal plants. Majority of the 64 medicinal plants that were cited by informants, (57.8%) were used to treat a specific ailment. Thus, the community should conserve and manage these medicinal plant species before they become extinct.

Akar kuning (Fibraurea chloroleuca Miers) merupakah salah satu tumbuhan obat tradisional yang digunakan oleh masyarakat untuk mengobati berbagai penyakit. Untuk menjadikan akar kuning sebagai tumbuhan obat yang sesuai standar, perlu dilakukan standardisasi. Salah satu standardisasi sediaan obat tradisional adalah penetapan kadar salah satu kandungan senyawa aktif dalam akar kuning. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi kandungan flavonoid dan menentukan kadar flavonoid total ekstrak akar kuning. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode maserasi untuk memperoleh ekstrak kental akar kuning dengan pelarut etanol 70%. Untuk menetapkan kadar flavonoid total dari ekstrak akar kuning dilakukan uji kualitatif dan pengukuran absorbansi melalui spektrofotometri UV-Vis dengan larutan standar kuersetin. Hasil penelitian secara kualitatif menunjukkan bahwa akar kuning mengandung flavonoid setelah penambahan AlCl3 1% dengan kadar flavonoid total yang terkandung dalam ekstrak akar kuning melalui pengukuran spektrofotometri Uv-Vis pada panjang gelombang maksimum 442 nm adalah 0,31031 ± 0,013607%. Berdasarkan hasil di atas, maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa ekstrak akar kuning mengandung flavonoid dengan kadar sebesar 0,31031 ± 0,013607%.   Akar kuning (Fibraurea chloroleuca Miers) is one of the traditional medicinal plants to treat various diseases. To prepare akar kuning as a medicinal plant according to the standard, standardization needs to be done. One of  standardization parameter of traditional medicine is the determination of the content of one of the active compounds in akar kuning. This research aimed to identify flavonoid content and determine the total flavonoid content of akar kuning ekstrak. The study used maceration method with ethanol 70% to prepare crude extract of akar kuning. To determine the total flavonoid content of akar kuning extract, the qualitative study and absorbance measurement using UV-Vis Spectrophotometer with quercetin as standard were performed. The results of qualitative study showed that akar kuning contained flavonoids which evaluated by the addition of 1% AlCl3,  with the total flavonoid content of akar kuning extract by UV-Vis spectrophotometry measurements at a maximum wavelength of 442 nm was 0.31031 ± 0.013607%. Based on the results above, it can be concluded that yellow root extract contains flavonoids with levels of 0.31031 ± 0.013607%

<italic>Bacopa monnieri</italic>, Family: Plantaginaceae, known as water hyssop, herb of grace or Indian penny wort, is one of the traditional medicinal plants in Ayurveda medicine, where it is also called Brahmi, a name derived from Brahma, the creator God of the Hindu Pantheon. It is now being widely promoted to enhance memory, learning and concentration and also to treat anxiety, depression, and systemic disorders like cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, hepatic, neurological and also respiratory problems. Further, Brahmi has been shown to possess anticancer, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Its phytochemical substances are alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, and the important constituents such as bacosides, bacopasides, and bacopasaponins, which all of these contribute to its remedial properties. This article provides a brief overview of the memory boosting activity of brahmi, (<italic>B. monnieri</italic>), to further provide an upto-date review showing its importance especially, memory boosting.

This paper shows the results of asurvey on use of traditional medicinal plants of K’ho people who living in the buffer zone of Chu Yang Sin National Park, Central Highlands, Vietnam. Total of 66 medicinal plant species belonging to 61 genera, 40 families were recorded through semi-structured interviews, group discussions and from guides of field trips who are knowledgeable about medicinal plants. These medicinal plants used by K’ho people are documented with latin name, family, local name, parts used and medicinal uses. In generally, fresh medicinal plants are mainly boiled or decocted for drinking and leaves are parts most commonly used. The results of this study showed that K’ho people still depend heavily on medicinal plants to treat diseases such as headache, fever, malaria, diarrhea, fractures, sprains and arthritis. Bài báo này đề cập kết quả khảo sát cách sử dụng cây thuốc truyền thống của người K’ho sống ở vùng đệm Vườn quốc gia Chư Yang Sin, Việt Nam. Tổng số 66 loài cây thuốc thuộc 61 chi, 40 họ đã được ghi nhận thông qua quá trình phỏng vấn bán cấu trúc, thảo luận nhóm và từ những người dẫn đường đi thu mẫu có am hiểu về cây thuốc. Những cây thuốc truyền thống của dân tộc K’ho được tư liệu hóa gồm tên latin, tên phổ thông, bộ phận sử dụng và cộng dụng. Nhìn chung, dược liệu tươi được dùng đun hoặc sắc để uống là chủ yếu và lá là bộ phận được sử dụng phổ biến nhất. Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy cộng đồng K’ho vẫn phụ thuộc vào cây thuốc để chữa trị một số bệnh như đâu đầu, sốt, sốt rét, ỉa chảy, lị, gãy xương, bong gân và thấp khớp.
