Guizotia abyssinica (L.F.) Cass. is one of the important oilseed crops cultivated in India. The seed of the plant is used by the tribal and rural people of our country as a source of edible oil. The present investigation of the Niger plant deals with the study of the back cross-program and improvement in the variety. Unknown local variety (A) of niger was selected as a non-recurrent parent because of having some desirable characters like less vegetative growth (dwarf), resistance to waterlogged condition, and large seed grains while IGP-76 variety (B) was selected as a recurrent parent and used as a female having characters like small black grains, resistant to leaf-eating cater Piller and powdery mildew result shows successfully transfer of the characters in the F1 generation. The average number of capitulum/plant shows very good and positive results in F1 as well as BC1 generation. As compared to the recurrent parent (B) an average number of capitulum per plant was increased in F1 generation by 14.28% and in BC1 generation by 28.5%. The table indicates that there is incensement in the average number of seeds per capitulum. The average number of seeds per capitulum was increased by 8.3% in the F1 generation and by 11.11 % in the BC1 generation as compared to the recurrent parent. Average weights of 1000 seeds were also increased in F1 generation by 31.78% and in BC1 generation by 47.28% along with the total yield per plant.

Developments in plant cell and tissue culture, and in gene manipulation techniques, have provided new tools for generating novel plant phenotypes not attainable solely by traditional selection breeding. Driven by the industrial potential, advances in fundamental plant biotechnology are now being directed to the development of new crops with seed oil compositions targeted towards specific applications. The targets encompass both the edible oil and chemical industries, the latter emphasizing those oils which contain unusual fatty acids with functionalities applicable to specific industrial uses. Traditional concepts of the compositions of plant seed oils must be set aside to embrace a new reality in which a high oleic acid oil can be produced in several current oilseed crops.

A field experiment was conducted at the research field of Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources Management, Ebonyi State University Abakaliki during the 2018 farming season to determine the effect of plant density on growth, yield and yield components of groundnut varieties. The experiment was conducted in a 3x4 factorial laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD). The treatments comprised three groundnut varieties (SAMNUT 24, 25 and 26) and four planting densities (40,000, 80,000, 120,000, and 160,000 plants ha-1). Each treatment was replicated four times. The parameters measured were plant height, number of leaves per plant, number of branches per plant, days to 50% flowering, shoot dry weight, leaf area index, crop growth rate, relative growth rate, net assimilation rate, number of pod per plant, pod weight per plant, hundred seed weight, number of seeds per plant, shelling percentage and total yield per hectare. The results showed that groundnut varieties were significant in all growth and yield parameters assessed except number of days to 50% flowering, Relative Growth Rate, number of pod per plant, and hundred seed weight while planting density recorded significant effect on all the growth and yield parameters. There were also significant interaction effects of varieties and plant density on plant height, number of branches per plant, leaf area index, relative growth rate, pod weight per plant, number of seeds per plant, and total yield per hectare. This result indicated that SAMNUT 26 and plant density of 160,000 plants ha-1 recorded the highest yield of groundnut and can be recommended for the farmers in the study area.

Paddy is one of the important cereal crops as food a main  food for a third of the world's population, including Asia. Production of paddy rice plants can be improved through plant genetic improvement. The ebjective of this study was examine the genetic diversity, heritability, and correlation between the characteristics of several local upland rice cultivars. This study was carried out in Tamarenja Village, Sindue District, Donggala Regency, Central Sulawesi Province. It was began in May to October 2018. A Randomized Block Design with eight cultivars as a genotypic treatment and reapeted three times was used in this study. There were 24 trial plots in total. Variables observed included plant height, number of leaves, length of leaves, number of tillers, number of productive tillers, age of panicle exit, panicle length, harvest age, number of seeds per panicle, seed length, seed diameter, weight of 100 seeds, and total yield. The results showed that the genetic influences were more dominant than the environment on all observed variables except the weight of 100 seeds and seed diameter. The number of seeds per panicle, the number of tillers and the number of productive tillers were traits that have a high value on heritability and genetic progress. Panicle length, seed diameter and weight of 100 seeds were characteristics that have a high genetic correlation coefficient on upland rice yields. The weight of 100 seeds has a direct influence and high genetic correlation to the results so that it can be used as a direct selection criterion to increase upland rice yields.

A field experiment was conducted during 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 to study the effect of foliar sprays of ethrel or ethephon (2- chloroethyl phosphonic acid) on pollen sterility and yield parameters in Capsicum annuum var. Pusa jwala. Effect of treatments was also studied in F1 hybrids raised from treated male sterile plants crossed with the control plants. Plants sprayed with 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3% (v/v) ethrel exhibited 93.1-100% pollen sterility. This was associated with significant reduction in yield parameters (number of flowers, fruits/plant, fruit size, number of seeds/fruit and total yield/plant). However, the plants sprayed only once with 0.1% ethrel at pre-meiotic stage showed 93.1% pollen sterility without any significant reduction in yield parameter. The F1 hybrids obtained by crossing the 100% male sterile treated plants with the pollen of untreated (control) plants exhibited only insignificant reduction in the number of flowers/ plant, fruits/plant, fruit size, number of seeds/fruit and total yield/plant. However, these parameters in F1 hybrids were significantly higher over the treated plants.

This study aimed to estimate the general and specific combining ability of partial soybean diallel crossings. The parents were divided in two groups contrasting for the characteristics of mass of thousand seeds, maturity group, flowers’ color, lodging and growth aspect. The scheme of partial diallel followed the Griffing model, where it were included the parents and the F1 generation. There was predominance of additive genic effects for the characteristics number of seeds per pods, number of seeds per plant and plants height. For number of pods per plant, seeds per plant and mass of hundred seeds the dominance effects were expressed by the superiority of specific combining ability in the determination of these characters. The parents G3 and G7 were the ones that contributed the most to the increase in yield in function of general combining ability for the characters number of pods per plant, seeds per plant, plant yield and mass of hundred seeds. The hybrids from the crossings between G3 x G5 and G3 x G4 are more promising for the characteristics related to yield, since they present elevated heterosis effect and high specific combining ability associated to increase general combining ability presented by the parent G3.

High heritability estimates were observed for days to maturity, number of siliquae per plant, number of seeds per siliquae, seed yield per plant and oil content in both the generations and number of secondary branches and plant height only F1 generation In F2 generation, high heritability was observed for plant height, number of seeds per siliqua and number of secondary branches. The maximum genetic advance coupled with high heritability was observed for number of siliquae per plant in F2 generation. Correlation study indicated that Seed yield per plant showed a positive and highly significant association with 1000-seed weight.

AbstractNiger (Guizotia abyssinicaCass) is an important minor oilseed crop of hilly and tribal regions and it is used for oil as well as for various other purposes only by the tribal people. Therefore, a systematic study was arranged to document about the increase in the seed yield of niger crop in relation to honeybees (Aphis mellifera), as a pollinator in niger crop with paired plot technique at the Niger Research Station (NRS) at Navsari Agricultural University (NAU) and at farmer’s field, Vanarasi, Navsari, Gujarat (India) and also studied its relation in terms of cost benefit ratio (CB). The trial was conducted at Niger Research Station (NRS), Vanarasi for 3 years (2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16) and also at farmer's field to ascertain the role and involvement of honey bees (Aphis mellifera) in swelling the seed yield of niger crop (due to pollination) and its effect on income due to increase in the niger seed yield. Significant differences were observed for number of capitula/plant, number of seeds/capitula, 1000 seed weight and seed yield in both the location for the consecutive 3 years. However, the seed yield and gross returns were considerably higher in first location of T1Natural plot/open pollinated with beehive (Aphis mellifera)in all the 3 years data with the maximum seed yield with the gross return was obtained in this treatment.

The degree of heterosis in the genus Capsicum spp. is considered high; however, most of the studies refer to the species Capsicum annuum L. In spite of the potential use of F1 hybrids in pungent peppers of the species Capsicum chinense, few studies are available which assess the magnitude of heterosis in this species . This study was carried out to assess heterosis and its components in F1 hybrids from a diallel cross between hot pepper lines (Capsicum chinense) and to obtain data on the allelic interaction between the parents involved in the crosses. Trials were made in Rio Branco-Acre, Brazil, from March through October 1997. A randomized complete block design with fifteen treatments and three replications was used. The treatments were five C. chinense accessions (from the Vegetable Germplasm Bank of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa - BGH/UFV) and 10 F1 hybrids derived from single crosses between them (reciprocals excluded). Diallel analyses were performed for total yield, fruit length/diameter ratio, fruit dry matter per plant, Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria incidence, capsaicin yield per plant and number of seeds per fruit. Non-additive genetic effects were larger than additive effects for all the traits assessed. Epistasis was detected for fruit dry matter per plant, capsaicin yield per plant and number of seeds per fruit. In these cases, epistasis seemed to be largely responsible for heterosis expression. Dominant gene action, ranging from incomplete dominance to probable overdominance, was responsible for heterosis in those traits where no epistatic genetic action was detected.

The aim of this study was to find the effect of planting distances and spraying with different concentrations of leaf fertilizer with micronate15 on some vegetative growth traits and yield of pea variety Green Canada in non-heated greenhouses, by using three planting distance (factor A) which includes:  A1:20, A2: 30, and A3:40 cm and four spray concentrations as foliar application (factor B) which includes: B0: zero, B1: 0.5, b2: 1.5 and b3: 2.5 liter of water). According to the results of this study the highest plant (124.82cm), number of branches (4.58), fresh weight,(95.94 g) and the total yield (142.41 g)were observed in the distance of planting (30 cm), while the highest value of the pod length was observed from the distance planting in 40 cm which is 8.39 cm. The concentration of 1.5 mL / liter of micronate15 gave the highest values of branches 4.53 branches, fresh weight 97.47 g, number of pods 36.73 pods, number of seeds 8.55 oats, length of the pod 8.83 cm and the total yield 150.78 g. The highest values of the number of branches 5.14 branch, fresh weight 105.72 g, the number of seeds 8.90 seed and the total yield 159.78 g were observed from the interaction between the planting distance of 30 cm and 1.5 mL / liter of nutrient micronate15. Also, the interaction between   20 cm distance and foliar application with 2.5 mL l of micronate15 gave the highest value in the number of leaves which is 53.36.

Noug (Guizotia abyssinica) is an outcrossing oilseed crop that serves as a source of edible oil and other nutrients although its seed yield is generally low. The analysis of agro-morphological traits in relation to seed and oil yields is important for improving the productivity of this crop. The present study aimed at assessing the variation and heritability of quantitative (10) and qualitative (6) traits in noug based on 60 landrace accessions collected from wide geographic area in Ethiopia. The field trial was conducted at two sites in Ethiopia using a square lattice design. The analysis of variance revealed significant variation (p < 0.05) among these accessions. The highest broad-sense heritability (H2) was recorded for days to 10% flowering (DTF10; 85.4%), whereas number of capitula per plant (NCPP) and number of seeds per capitulum (NSPC) showed medium heritability (H2 = 38.5% and 31.6%, respectively). NCPP and NSPC showed a highly significant (p < 0.01) positive and negative genotypic correlation with days to flowering, respectively. These three traits showed very low genotypic coefficient of variation (<1%). In the case of qualitative traits, small capitulum, large flower, green leaf, green stem and course leaf margin showed significant association with higher number of seeds per plant (NSPP). Euclidean distance-based cluster analysis revealed that the clustering pattern of the accessions poorly correlates with the geographic distance between sample collecting sites. Similarly, no clear clustering pattern of accessions was revealed by principal component analysis (PCA) that explained 66.3% and 53.6% of the total variation of quantitative traits and qualitative traits, respectively. The oil content of these accessions was previously investigated and accessions with high oil content show large differences in terms of days to flowering, NSPP and thousand seed weight (TSW). Among the accessions included in this research, Hr_B21; Gj_C17, Sh_I4 and Gr_F15 Gj_G18 and Tg-R13 are top ranking, as they have at least one the following highly desirable traits: early maturity, high oil content, NSPP and TSW. Hence, crossbreeding of their selected genotypes would lead to the development of new cultivars that combine early maturity and both high seed and oil yields.
