The current article aims to explore corruption at the local level. There are two main discourses that set the background for this study. First, corruption is considered a result of decentralization, which opened up the local political structure. Second, corruption happened as a result of a societal shift along the prismatic continuum. These two main discourses serve as the theoretical background in research to find the meanings behind the reality of perpetual corruption occurring at the local level. The research employed the theory of decentralization and a prismatic society approach as analytical tools along with a phenomenological approach. The study found linkages in decentralization as a new reason for the growth and development of corruption at the local level on account of the prismatic structure empowering elite rulers to replicate corrupt practices.

We discuss findings from a survey of sociology students in Germany and consequences for teaching. We focus on the de facto formation of a sociological canon, the relation between theories and methods, and effects of social and political characteristics on student’s scientific preferences. Our findings suggest that irrespective of an agreement of the sociological professionals on a common definition of a core, a de facto canon of theories and methods exists in teaching practices. Moreover, specific relations between sociological theories and methods occur in the data. Both should be recognized in the discussion about curricula design, especially concerning teaching research methods. Finally, we discovered effects of gender and political attitude on students’ preferences for theories and methods. Such differences might be associated with different motivations for studying sociology and labor market orientation. This should be considered in curricula design as well, especially at the local level of departments.

The paper presents a phenomenological approach to the study of socio-cultural subject matters, which are viewed as the transcendental foundations of the social and ontological status of the objects of culture – in post-Husserlian Phenomenology (in the works of such followers of E. Husserl’s as A. Schutz and R. Ingarden). The authors show that in the process of elaboration of the ideas of “late” Husserl Schutz and Ingraden introduce original principles of socio-cultural analysis for phenomenological sociology, phenomenological ontology and aesthetics. In its analysis of the meaningful structure of the social world, social phenomenology develops analytical tools that can be used in an investigation of the transcendental foundations of sociality as well as cognitive background of communicative practices. Furthermore, within his “phenomenological ontology” R. Ingarden creates an original system of categories for socio-cultural objects investigations and reveals the specific character of the intentional component of the ideal subject matter of culture. It is shown that the phenomenological ontology of culture as an intentionally constituted reality is transcendental with respect to human consciousness as well as its own material foundations. The socio-cultural reality is generated by the creative activity of the human mind. Despite its contingent nature, it transcends the boundaries of the natural world transforming it into a meaningful human-created reality.

This article gives a survey of a blended learning approach called Vienna E-Lecturing (VEL), implemented in the course Research Methods and Evaluation, which is required by the psychology program at the University of Vienna, Austria. VEL replaces a main lecture and has been designed to teach methodological issues more effectively as well as to strengthen students' learning competences in this field. The program's conceptualization is based on instructional and motivational findings yielding the program's two main teaching principles: (1) networking and (2) optimal instructions. The Internet-based course lasts two semesters and is composed of 10 online learning modules and 11 face-to-face meetings (including tutorials). The modules, which are available successively via a learning platform, systematically instruct students to learn more effectively by cooperating and fulfilling different tasks within small groups. The current article describes the program's principles and theoretical background and outlines the 10 online modules. In addition, some module examples are given for illustration.

This study aims to describe the background and experience of parents, as well as perform a typology on the views of parents in sending their children to school at an early age. Lately, there has been a lot of discussion about the pros and cons of enrolling early childhood children into PAUD (KB) level schools. Pro parents argue that at school, children can socialize with their friends, can learn by playing, can be independent, and much more. This research is a qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. The results of this study indicate that parents who send their children to school at an early age are motivated by the fact that children do not have friends, for the sake of children's independence, lack of educational games at home, children's desires, for children's growth and development, basic Islamic education, and reasons for adequate school facilities. Then, the experience felt by parents in sending their children to school at an early age is the number of positive changes in children. While the view of parents in sending their children to school at an early age is the need for optimizing children's growth and development; school preparation in the next stage; educational playground; and familiarity with the rules.

The development of agriculture allowed humans to congregate in settlements which developed into the modern urban societies. This urbanization process caused profound habitat changes, giving rise to urban ecosystems where the structure, functioning and the dynamics of the ecosystem are determined by human activities. Despite the increasing rates of urbanization worldwide, the ecology of urban ecosystems is poorly known. In this chapter, we focus on urban stream ecosystems to expose the current advances in urban fish ecology. We explore topics concerning urban fish biodiversity, ecological interactions and adaptation to urban systems. We also explore different approaches and methodologies for the study of urban fish. Our goal is to introduce the theoretical background and analytical tools to study urban fishes with the intent of facilitating future research

Islamic boarding school (pesantren) is the oldest Islamic educational institution in Indonesia. Pesantren is recognized as one of the institutions that can encourage the realization of multiculturalism amongst Muslims. However, recently pesantren has been alleged to be one of the centers for the spread of religious radicalism. This study is aimed at analyzing multicultural education in salaf (traditional) pesantren, that is appropriate and be able to prevent the growth and development of religious radicalism in Indonesia. The study is a qualitative research with a phenomenological approach involving four salaf pesantrens in Java; namely Al-Qadir Pesantren of Sleman Yogyakarta, Dar al-Tauhid of Cirebon, Roudlatuth Thalibin of Rembang, and Tebuireng of Jombang. The research data were collected by observation, interviews, documentation, and focus-group discussions (FGD). Data were analyzed using an interactive technique. Findings showed that the forms of multicultural education at the four salaf pesantrens generally have similarities in the application of multiculturalism core values. However, each pesantren has its own specific peculiarities. The various cultures built up by the four caregivers of the salaf pesantrens have been effective to prevent the growth and development of religious radicalism at the  pesantren, particularly, and in the society, more generally.

This contribution discusses the demolished, Palestinian villageof Lubya as memory place. Lubya was attacked and occupied byIsraeli military forces in 1948 and its inhabitants had to abandon thevillage. Instead they became part of a world-wide Palestinian diaspora. In Edward Said’s terms, like other Palestinian refugees, they became“nowhere people”, who exploited memories about their village of originin order to construct an identity in the diaspora. This memory workis a problem as memories of individual villages become integrated inthe broader discourse of the Palestinian nakba (catastrophe). Thus, aforceful counter-narrative is emerging, which negates the dominant,Zionist master commemorative narrative on which the state of Israel isbased. The theoretical background of the contribution includes PierreNora’s notion of lieux de mémoire, Paul Connerton’s ideas about bodymemory, as well as a phenomenological approach to landscape, place, and space.
