Bungli (Oroxylum indicum) has been used for generations in Asia as traditional medicine. The seeds of the bungli are commonly used as traditional medicine to treat typhoid, cough, hypertension, internal fever, fever and diarrhea. The active compounds in this plant are known to have anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, antifungal and antibacterial activities. Our research on methanol extract of bungli fruit seeds showed its potential to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria that causes diarrhea. Bungli seed extract samples with a concentration of 25% showed an inhibition zone with a diameter of 9.22 mm, while at a concentration of 50% the diameter was 11.16 mm and 75% had a diameter of 12.88 mm. This size is indeed smaller than chloramphenicol (26 mm), but this potential can be greater if the extraction is carried out more intensively to extract the active compound, the sample concentration is increased, and the part or age of the plant with the highest content of the active compound is used; so that the Bungli plant is expected to be an alternative in overcoming Escherichia coli infection.

Abstract: Sambiloto is plant one of the natural resources that be come important to used as medicine. Sambiloto effcacy had been known since long time ago. Based on it’s pharmacological properties, Sambiloto leaves provide antidiarrheal activity against bacteria that causing diarehea in humans especially Eacherichia coli and Shigella dysentriae bacteria. The main content of Sambiloto leaves are diterpenoid lactones (andrographolide), paniculides, farnesols and flavonoids. The purpose of this research was to study the effect of the methanol extract concentration of Sambiloto leaves toward the sensitivity of Escherichia coli and Shigella dysentriae bacteria by using diffusion method. Research design using quasi experimental research. Sample used were leaf extract of Sambiloto with concentration of 100%, 75%, 50% and 25% with six times repetition. Data was collected and analyzed by using Spearman analysis. Based on the reseach fnding, the measurement of inhibition zone on Escherichia coli bacteria test found that the average value were 14.67 mm at 100% concentration, 13.67 mm at 75% concentration, 12.17 mm at concentration 50% and 10.00 mm at 25% concentration. The antibacterial activity of methanol, ethanol, chloroform, and hexane extracts of the leaves of Himalayan gymnospermous plantGinkgo bilobaL. was assessed against five animal and plant pathogenic strains (Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Erwinia chrysanthemi, and Xanthomonas phaseoli) employing disc-diffusion and broth-dilution assays. The methanol extract showed the highest activity (zone of inhibition of 15–21 mm) followed by ethanol (14–19 mm), chloroform (15–20 mm), and hexane (14–19 mm) extracts at 250 μg/mL. A minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 7.8 μg/mL was found for the methanol extract against most of the pathogens tested.

The antibacterial activity of functionalized zeolite NaY (CBV100) with different concentrations of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) (0.01, 0.05, 0.20 and 0.40 M) was studied against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 (Gram positive) and Escherichia coli ATCC 11229 (Gram negative) through disc diffusion technique (DDT). The characterization of functionalized zeolite NaY with fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy indicated the attachment of APTES on zeolite NaY. Through DDT, the inhibition zone of functionalized zeolite NaY increased proportionally to the amount of the amine-functional group attached onto zeolite NaY. Functionalized zeolite NaY showed higher antibacterial activity against Gram-positive compared to Gram-negative bacteria. It can be concluded from this study that amine-functionalized zeolite NaY shows evidence of antibacterial activities.

Some novel N-phenylpyrazolines were synthesized and investigated for their antibacterial activitiy. Chalcones 2-4 which were prepared from acetophenone and veratraldehyde derivatives were reacted with phenylhydrazine to give N-phenylpyrazolines 5-7. All of the synthesized compounds were characterized using FTIR, GC-MS, and NMR spectrometers. Further, antibacterial activity of N-phenylpyrazolines were evaluated by agar well-diffusion method against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Shigella flexneri. The highest activity (highest inhibition zone) of compound 5 was 2.6 mm (at 1000 ppm) against B. subtillis, compound 6 was 7.25 mm (at 1000 ppm) against S. aureus, and compound 7 was 6.75 mm (at 500 ppm) against S. aureus. The results indicated that compound 6 and 7 exhibited promising antibacterial activity.
