ABSTRACTThe The increasingly difficult economic conditions require educational institutions at the tertiary level to develop a model for collecting funds from the community, one of which is through cash waqf. Airlangga University already has a model of developing and utilizing campus-based cash waqf. So with this waqf solution the community can be helped especially by students to continue their education. Universities throughout the world contain people of Chinese heritage studying, researching or working in higher educational institutions. This paper offers a case study example from a higher education institution in China in analysing the fluctuating identity positions of Chinese heritage students. From a critical intercultural perspective, the study explores Chinese heritage students’ reflexivity about perceptions of their own Chineseness and foreignness. The paper argues against labeling or categorizing Chinese heritage students as local or international students as the notions are biased insofar that they negate the possibility for identity. Thus, a critical intercultural lens is used as a way to problematise a deeper engagement into dialogues about the self and the other. The paper also problematises the implications the study has for teacher education in terms of attempting to move beyond essentialist logics and practices in how Chinese heritage students are understood and researched.

Since the first generation of distance learning the format of distance education has changed a lot. Actually, with the increasing use of web technology to interact online the learning environments have been radically changed. The emergence of MOOC and its adoption by well-known universities has also influenced the change. Of course, the adoption of technology in education is not happening in the same way and at the same time and pace in all educational institutions. In fact, the success of adoption of technology depends on several factors related to the organization where it is implemented and with the individuals involved. In this chapter, the authors present the creation of a global and innovative higher education environment case study, the evolution of the solutions offered concerning distance learning, the actual offers, and the concerns for the future. They identify the factors that enabled or constrained this evolution as well as raise some questions that are still unanswered and point out some clues for future research in the field of creating a global learning environment.

Since 1994 and the coming of democracy to South Africa there has been a concerted attempt to develop a coherent, unified educational system that will redress the inequities of the apartheid systems. Significant to this ongoing process is the field of higher education, where relevant legislation has been enacted in order to bring coherence and consistency to the education system in the public and private sectors. Significant issues have arisen with regard to the provision made by private religious educational institutions, especially those who have experienced difficulties in being accredited by statutory bodies. This paper seeks to explore these issues and suggest ways forward that are appropriate within an emerging unitary system of education that is fit for purpose in Africa and particularly South Africa, taking as a case study the formation of the Association of Christian Religious Practitioners.

This article investigates problem representations of nationality diversity at higher education and research institutions in Norway and in the other Nordic countries. Nationality diversity refers to different nationalities among academic staff that increases language, value and information diversity in organizations. Employing a ‘What’s the problem represented to be’ approach, we uncover problem representations identified in previous Nordic research on nationality diversity in academia as well as in a recent case study on nationality diversity at Norwegian higher education and research institutions. While the literature review identifies different problem representations, explores their underlying conceptual logics and describes how these problem representations are formed, the Norwegian case study intends to address problem representations that seem to be left unproblematic both in previous research and organizational practices in Norwegian academia.

Abstract: The government has forced the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (KKNI) into the curriculum of every level of education, from basic education to higher education. Thus, the influence of the demands of society, political maps, social and economic conditions is far more dominant in determining the direction of education in Indonesia than the system of public trust that accumulates in its philosophical view. Important philosophical beliefs as a counterweight and also determine the direction of the pace of education, so that educational institutions do not necessarily only function as producers of labor. On the awareness of the importance of the philosophical dimension in determining the direction of education (Islam), there are still parties (Muslims) who are allergic to even consider sinful, in touch with philosophy with all its rules. This article will answer the question; How is the construction of epistemology of knowledge according to the Qur'an and what are the implications of the epistemology for Islamic education? Kata Kunci: Epistemologi, Pendidikan Islam, dan Al-Qur’an

This article explores the link between modes of funding, governance and performance in higher education with the help of a case study involving three engineering colleges in West Bengal, India. It examines the major factors driving performances in the selected higher education institutions. It explains how the ability to adopt and implement performative policies depends on the objective functions, mode of funding and the reputation of the institutions. The findings suggest that the obsession with performance and its linkage with funding may not necessarily lead to a sustained and inclusive improvement in quality in the higher education sector. On the other hand, institutions driven by an objective of maximising prestige may ensure quality without any performative governance policies in place. The findings are contextualised in the larger debate about implementing neo-liberal policies for the improvement of quality in the higher education sector at the national and global level.

The chapter draws on a case study method using factor and regression analysis to interpret the questionnaire responses about the uses of wireless handheld devices in higher education. The principal findings included that behavior and attitude contribute strongly to the perceived performance of using such devices in the chosen context, and that facilitating conditions have a more complex and mediated relationship with behavior and attitude on the one hand and perceived performance on the other. The authors elaborate the implications of those findings for increasing alignment across several different interfaces related to blended and mobile learning in the early 21st century.
