AbstractBackground and objectiveChronic pain is a growing phenomenon worldwide. It is considered a medical problem because, besides the socio-economic issues involved, pain is often accompanied by psychosocial problems. Apart from the physical pain, living with chronic pain has many additional consequences. People living with chronic pain generally suffer from other physical and psychological consequences. The impact of chronic pain varies enormously between individuals, but the suffering is frequently pervasive and detrimental. The objective of this study was to review the evidence concerning, ways in which people living with chronic pain are affected in their everyday lives.MethodsElectronic databases Scopus, Cinahl and PsycINFO were searched from 2008 to September 2012 using a ‘building blocks’ approach and reference lists were scanned. PubMed was also searched and checked for duplicates compared to Scopus, Cinahl and PsycINFO. Data were extracted from included studies and methodological quality assessed with a view to exploring quality differences. To guide the review and interpretation, individual components of methodological quality were compared against a checklist. A narrative synthesis was formulated involving three categories: (1) clinical aspects, (2) everyday life aspects and (3) interpersonal aspects.ResultsThe search strategy identified 1140 citations; one study was found during the preliminary searching through references, and a search of reference lists provided five publications. Of these, 24 publications, representing 23 populations, met the inclusion criteria. In total, there were 22 cross-sectional studies and 2 cohort studies. Study populations ranged from 74 to 3928 participants and were heterogeneous in nature across studies with respect to age, duration and localisations of pain and outcome measures. We found a general consensus that life with chronic pain was associated with higher prevalence and higher levels of depression and diagnoses of widespread pain and nonspecific pain are more clearly associated with depression than is specific pain. The results of link between chronic pain and anxiety and stress were not obvious. Overall, there is plausible evidence to suggest a positive relationship between chronic pain and disability and the evidence is stronger for a significant positive association between nonspecific pain and disability, compared to specific pain. It can be summarized that there is a lack of evidence for a relationship between intensity of pain and quality of life. However, there is evidence that nonspecific pain is more compellingly associated with low quality of life than is specific pain. The evidence of a positive relation between pain and problems in close relations is not convincing but there is an indication to suggest that there is a pain-related issue regarding participation in many social aspects of everyday life.ConclusionBesides the pain itself, people living with chronic pain are affected in other aspects of life. In particular, it is evident that they experience challenges with respect to depressive thoughts, disability, lower quality of life and conflicts in close relationships.ImplicationsWhen designing interventions for people with chronic pain, it is essential to take into consideration the fact that living with chronic pain has far-reaching consequences beyond the pain suffered.

This chapter considers the types of people who run for office and the types of campaigns they run. It examines the impact of factors such as personal ambition, civic responsibility, mobilizing issues, personal gain, and political indignation by looking at a large sample of local politicians (i.e., unsuccessful candidates and elected officials) from the greater Chicago metropolitan area. The small size, limited scope, and low bias of most Chicago-area municipal governments mean that these local politicians, like local voters, tend to be stakeholders in their communities. They are very concerned with issues of economic development and quality of life, yet are drawn into public affairs primarily from a sense of civic duty and an attachment to their towns. They are motivated less by ideology, partisanship, or even personal ambition, than by a public-spirited commitment to sustaining the quality of their communities.

Introduction: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of chronic digestive system conditions which significantly influence the everyday life of patients. Exhausting intestinal discomfort might cause a strong feeling of distress and lowers the quality of life. This study was based on the question: how are the sense of coherence, social support, socio-demographic variables and the duration of disease related to the quality of life of individuals suffering from IBD?Materials and methods: Thirty-nine individuals suffering from IBD were examined: 21 with ulcerative colitis, 17 with Crohn’s disease and 1 with microscopic colitis. The participants completed a socio-demographic survey, and Life Orientation Questionnaire (SOC-29) and Berlin Social Support Scales (BSSS) questionnaires. The quality of life was examined by the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Gastric (FACT-Ga) questionnaire. Results: The overall rate of the sense of coherence with its components and the available instrumental and emotional support was found to be significantly connected to the patients’ quality of life. The level of education differentiated the examined patients in terms of the quality of life. Conclusions: Psychological resources can play a significant role in the assessment of the impact of chronic disease on patients’ everyday life. It is important to focus on their importance in raising the quality of life of the patients.

The article deals with analysis of the observations and results that point to the contrast between useful-based and resource-based approaches and the possibilities-based approach, founded by Amartya Sina (Nobel Prize in Economics in 1998). Thus, a possibilities-based approach seeks to remedy the situation by focusing on the ability to achieve specific goals rather than on the means. The nature of real existence has always been of interest to social thinkers for centuries. If the current criteria of economic progress, reflected in a number of ‘turnkey’ statistics, are orientated on the growth of inanimate "comfort objects" (such as GNP and GDP in the basis of countless economic development studies), this focus can only be justified by the impact of these objects on human lives (that they directly or indirectly affect). The interest in replacing them with direct indicators of the quality of life, well-being and freedom that people enjoy is becoming more and more apparent. The article is presented in two parts. In the first part, we will try to highlight the imperfections of traditional currency indicators, as well as the difficulties of measuring various aspects of poverty, especially in developing countries such as Morocco. We argue that poverty is not simply an idea of the inadequacy of an individual's economic means, but rather a fundamental shortcoming that entails deprivations. The second part of the paper focuses on the reorientation of ability to explain the extent to which a possibilities-based approach could be the basis for assessing the level of financial difficulties rather than resource-focused income and wealth.

At present, the significance of the ecological component in the socio-economic development of the regions has grown significantly. Sustainable socio-economic development of the region is possible only with the improvement of the regional ecosystem and ensuring environmental security. The article proposes a methodology for assessing regional environmental factors and their impact on the health of the inhabitants of the territory, as well as assessing the impact of public health on the quality and standard of living of the population (GRP is used as a criterion for assessing the standard of living of the population in the region, and HDI is used as a criterion assessing quality of life in the region). Approbation of the methodology was carried out on the example of seven subjects of the Russian Federation (Perm region, Nizhny Novgorod region, Sverdlovsk, Samara and Chelyabinsk regions, Tatarstan and Bashkortostan Republics). All regions demonstrate a low level of functioning of the ecological component, in addition, three regions (Perm region, the Republic of Bashkortostan and the Sverdlovsk region) show negative dynamics. The regression analysis presented in the article showed a significant influence of the ecological component on the health status of the inhabitants of all the assessed regions. The proposed methodology can be applied not only for interregional, but also for intercountry analysis of environmental conditions. The development and implementation of measures to reduce the dysfunctions of the ecological component of the regional socio-economic system will mitigate the negative impact on the regional economy, improve the quality of life of the population of the regions.

Indonesian government, through BKKBN, has joined to promote healthy life in the elderly in the community. Bina Keluarga Lansia (BKL) programme was established to fulfil elderly need through a family-based approach. This study is aimed to evaluate the programme with the examination of the quality of life of its members, including the elderly and their family member. We used a cross-sectional method using WHO-QOL BREF questionnaire to assess the quality of life and another questionnaire to enlist the involvement on the BKL activities. This study was conducted in 2018, at four BKL groups across Sleman Regency. Further analysis was conducted with gaussian mix models to adjust for the cluster effect from sampling method. Our 103 respondents with 68 family members and 35 elderly generally have a good quality of life on four dimensions of WHO-QOL BREF. We found that BKL activities statistically significant associated with better QoL, especially in Social Domain and Psychological Domain. Activities that were specifically associated with better QoL was health education on elderly resilience and art/music activities. Other activities that show borderline association was business activities. BKL programme has shown an association with better QoL, thus any successful activities should be maintained or improved, and other less influential activities should be reviewed and customised with local needs.

The article considers the quality of life of population and the impact of man-made accidents and disasters during stable functioning of industrial enterprises. The author offered to take into account the influence of anthropogenic factors, the source of which is industrial production, provoking man-made accidents and catastrophes, when assessing the quality of life of population. To fully take into account the factors affecting the quality of life of population, a comprehensive methodology created by the Council for the Study of Productive Forces by order of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation that contains 19 indicators for diagnosing the quality of life of the population of the region, grouped by seven main areas, was chosen. Changes in the system of indicators of the consolidated index of the quality of life of the population under the influence of man-made accidents and catastrophes in the context of 7 spheres are shown. As an example, the impact on the main components of the quality of life of the population of the largest man-made disaster in the history of mankind and the nuclear industry - the Chernobyl accident - is considered.
