Since self-repair represents a phenomenon that has not been investigated for native speakers of Spanish in interactive contexts, this study is an attempt to approach the different forms of self-repair in this Romance language. The theoretical basis are the studies by Cohen (1966) for the different types of speech errors that lead to self-repair, Levelt (1983) for the different forms of repair, and Schegloff et al. (1977) for the different phases of repair organisation. The data to be qualitatively analysed are retrieved from the corpus CORLEC. The study shows that the different forms of repair are more easily to be detected than the different types of speech error. The reason is that the influences of an earlier segment or of a following one are sometimes not clear. Additionally, the influences on the troublesome item are not always phonological in nature but cognitively motivated.

The covert repair hypothesis views disfluencies as by-products of covert self-repairs applied to internal speech errors. To test this hypothesis we examined effects of noise masking and accuracy emphasis on speech error, disfluency, and self-repair rates. Noise reduced the numbers of disfluencies and self-repairs but did not affect speech error rates significantly. With accuracy emphasis, speech error rates decreased considerably, but disfluency and self-repair rates did not. With respect to these findings, it is argued that subjects monitor errors with less scrutiny under noise and when accuracy of speaking is unimportant. Consequently, covert and overt repair tendencies drop, a fact that is reflected by changes in disfluency and self-repair rates relative to speech error rates. Self-repair occurrence may be additionally reduced under noise because the information available for error detection—that is, the auditory signal—has also decreased. A qualitative analysis of self-repair patterns revealed that phonemic errors were usually repaired immediately after their intrusion.

This essay analyzes the political motivations behind the Jewish Nation-State Bill introduced in the Knesset in November 2014, shedding light on the ascendancy of the Israeli political establishment's radical right wing. It argues that there were both internal and external factors at work and that it is only by examining these thoroughly that the magnitude of the racist agenda currently being promoted can be grasped. The essay also discusses the proposed legislation's long history and the implications of this effort to constitutionalize what amounts to majoritarian despotism in present-day Israel.
