Tertullian, illustrating the sacrilegious nature of pagan religion, records that in an auditorium he saw a person being burned to death in the role of Hercules and another being castrated as Attis; both of these examples he adduces to substantiate his assertion to his pagan audience that ‘criminals often adopt the roles of your deities’ (‘et ipsos deos vestros saepe noxii induunt’). The practice that Tertullian here deplores is the subject of this paper: the punishment of criminals in a formal public display involving role-play set in a dramatic context; the punishment is usually capital.

Scholarly literature attesting to the benefits of role play in teaching International Relations or Political Science subjects is abundant and universally positive. However, despite many case studies presenting snapshots of single examples, long term data concerning a role play exercise is difficult to find. This study presents student feedback data gathered from ten iterations of the Middle East Politics Simulation carried out over five years from 2011-15. The data obtained from hundreds of respondents establishes very clear trends in terms of satisfaction, engagement and workload. The findings demonstrate that students can be significantly engaged in the subject matter through role plays and that they value these opportunities and the learning that ensues, even though it may represent more work than they are used to allotting to traditional assignments. The results show that year after year, successive student cohorts have made a clear judgement that extra work is worthwhile when it pays off against their perceived learning. The inference can also be drawn that they do not see this same pay off when completing essay type assignments.

Abstract: Studying and experiencing folk dances from a sociocultural perspective (Conesa, 2017) is an opportunity for students to understand the context of movements that make sense as forms of expression, embedded into dances from different parts of the world. In addition, this is an important tool for the instruction of future Physical Education teachers, who do not usually see themselves as really in a position to teach this content (Cañabate, Rodríguez & Zagalaz, 2016). In this context, the objective is to offer a didactic experience that brings future Physical Education teachers closer to the content of folk dances, in order to increase their knowledge about the subject and encourage training to complete the curriculum. The project was conducted in the subject of Physical Artistic-Expressive Activities, with a total of 108 undergraduates enrolled in the Physical Activity and Sports Sciences (CAFyD) degree. The design of the didactic experience was divided into: theoretical construction, practical experience of folk dances of the five continents, and experimenting role play with the students. From this experience, students within the university were introduced to the topic of dances from different continents. The theoretical-practical experience of folk dances is an alternative to be considered, as it contributes as an educational tool both for the training and qualification of Physical Education teachers and for the approach of students to dancing and its sociocultural value.
