<p>This research discusses The Use of Figurative Languages on the Students’ Poetry Semester V at FKIP Universitas HKBP Nommensen. The problems of this research are (1) what types of figurative language used on the students’ poetry semester V at FKIP Universitas HKBP Nommensen Medan? (2) what figurative language is dominantly used on the students’ poetry  semester V at FKIP Universitas HKBP Nommensen Medan? The objectives of this research are to find out types of figurative language used on the students’ poetry semester V at FKIP Universitas HKBP Nommensen Medan and to figure out and analyze what figurative language is dominantly used on the students’ poetry  semester V at FKIP Universitas HKBP Nommensen Medan?To find out the answer of the problem in this research, the writer uses the related theories; they are Quinn (1982), McDonough and Shaw (1993), Gluckberg (2001), Alm-Arvius (2003), Lazar (2003), Ratumanan and Laurens (2003), Brown (2004), Harmer (2004), Heller (2006), Picken (2007), Keraf (2009), Creswell (2009), Arikunto (2010), Arnold and Von Hollander (2011), Dalman (2012), Dancygier and Sweetser (2014). This research is conducted with descriptive qualitative research where the subject and object is taken from the students’ poetry. The writer gets the data by observation and documenting. After the data had been collected, the writer finds out three types of figurative language on the students’ poetry: symbol, metaphors and personifications. In teaching poetry, every teacher needs to call upon a number of techniques and methods. If teachers of poetry disagree on the methods of teaching a certain poet, they must agree on goals: To put their students in touch with the mind of that poet. No doubt, it is known for every one that good poetry lessons occur in classrooms where young people are guided by responsive teachers who implement as well as they plan.</p><strong>Keywords: </strong>Figurative language, poetry, language

Language is a tool of communication used by people anywhere and every time. Now days people commonly find a figurative language in daily life, for example in a lyric of song. Figurative language is a way to express an idea in implicit way. This research is trying to analyze the figurative languages which exist in the lyric of song “A Whole New World” and trying to find out its meaning by analyzing its contextual meaning. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The data instrument is the song lyric which taken from Genius website. The result showed that this song consist of some figurative languages, such as alliteration, simile, personification, metaphor, and hyperbole. Furthermore, the most figurative language used in the lyric is metaphor. It is highly relatable with the imaginative theme of the song itself. The contextual meaning of each figurative language is also explained based on the situation of the lyric.

The aim of the research is to find out endophoric references in Mark Zuckerberg biography and the relationship between discourse analysis and pragmatic. The research used descriptive qualitative research design. The data obtained from Mark Zuckerberg biography written by the biography website. The data are analyzed using Halliday & Hasan’s theory (1976) of reference cohesion reference is one of the cohesive devices. The result shows that endophoric reference exists in Mark Zuckerberg biography endophoric. Endophoric consist of two types, the first is anaphoric and the second is cataphoric. In this research there are five type cohesive devices that are usually used in texts like substitution, references, ellipsis, lexical cohesion, and conjunctions. In the research found that cataphoric is dominant than anaphoric because the subject is located in the beginning of the sentences. Cohesive devices not only focused on lexical cohesion, but also focused on ellipsis and substitution and reference.

The research aimed to describe vowels and consonants in Sasak dialect. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The object of this research is the phological system of Sasak dialect about vowel and consonant while the object of this research is people in Mataram city especially in rembige village, Nusa Tenggara Barat. The subject took from the observation technique. They are selected from the characteristics of fluent Sasak dialect. The data collected from three different domains. The domain are family domain, friendship domain and neighborhood domain. The theory to analyze the data was from Miler and Huberman (1984). Instrument collected from observation and recording technique, the result of this research shows that the type of vowels in Sasak dialect are /ʌ/, /ɪ/, /u/, /e/, /o/ and /ə/. The vowel / i /   had two allophones namely [ ɪ ] and [ i ]. the vowel / e /   had two allophones namely [e] and [ə],  the vowel /o/ had one allophone namely [o] and the vowel / u / also had one allophones [ u ]. There were 18 consonants found in Sasak Dialect, those were: /b/, /c/, /d/, /g/, /h/, /j/, /k/, /l/, /m/, /n/, /p/, /q/, /r/, /s/, /t/, /w/, /y/, /ŋ/, and /ñ/.

The purpose of this study is to identify the metaphorical expression in Manado Malay and also to describe the meaning of those metaphors. Metaphor is a kind of figurative language which uses connotative meaning through the comparison without using the word “like” or “as”. Most of metaphorical expression comes from a human behavior. The subject consisted of speakers of Manado Malay particularly the researcher himself and those who lives in Wuwuk village. The writer used descriptive research. Qualitative research is the suitable method to analyze the metaphorical expression. The writer used qualitative approach to find the actual data about metaphorical expression, the data collections are in the form of words, pictures, rather than numbers. The result shows that there are 53 metaphorical expressions in Manado Malay commonly used in everyday speech. It can be indicate by through, human's behavior, human's characteristics, and feelings, such as “Putar bale” which means someone who is lie and “Bobou seho” which means someone who has drunk. Some other metaphor is used to describe a circumstance such as, “ujang kopi” which mean zenithal rain or refer to the hot rainy weather conditions. It is expected that many other researches could be conducted especially the problem which concerned with metaphorical expression. Studying language and it’s relation with metaphorical expression leave many question to answer. That is why, by conducting this research, other researchers can get some information about metaphorical expression in Manado Malay. Keywords: Metaphorical Expression; Manado Malay; Figurative Language

This descriptive qualitative research was aimed at finding out the methods employed by the EFL Teacher at SMPIT Tunas Cendekia Mataram. The setting of the research was in SMPIT Tunas Cendekia Mataram. The subject of this research was the 7th grade EFL teacher consisting of one single teacher. This research was designed as a descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected through, interview and document study (lesson plan). Data was analyzed by using the theories proposed by Larsen-Freeman (1986) and Richards and Rodgers (2001) classification. In relation to problem raised, the study identifed that there were three methods the teacher employed in the teaching process. They were Community Language Learning, Direct Method, and Audio-Lingual Method. Community Language Learning was employed five (5) times for five (5) different meetings, Direct Method was employed two (2) times for two different meetings, and Audio-Lingual Method was employed one (1) time.

The study of stylistics has grown wider in literatures and in linguistics. Stylistics provides linguistic features that support the interpretation of certain text so that the investigation becomes comprehensive. This research aims at finding stylistic features of the narrations of the prologue and epilogue of Mata Najwa talk show in an episode entitled Pejabat Pemburu Rente. Using ear-catching word arrangements, the prologue and epilogue successfully attract the audiences’ attention and, thus, the talk show becomes one of the most popular TV show in Indonesia. The stylistic features observed in this research are based on deviation and parallelism. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The data source is Mata Najwa show with the sub-title Pejabat Pemburu Rente, while the data are the prologue and the epilogue of the show. The analysis shows three features in the prologue as well as in the epilogue: figurative language, sound repetition and word repetition.

The study aimed to analyze how the language lexical interference of Mandailing Language on Indonesian language. The study conducted descriptive qualitative research as a research method. The subject of the study was the society at Sitamiang Baru, Padangsidimpuan. The techniques of collecting data were interview and recording. In addition, the data were analyzed based on Miles and Huberman in Sugiyono (2016: 338) who said that the steps of analyzing data are; 1) data reduction; 2) data display; 3) conclusion drawing/verification. The result of the study showed that Interference at group vocabulary level, i.e. lexical interference in the form of words basis and lexical interference in the form of repeat words. It means that the society tried to speak by using Indonesian language however, there are some interferences which make the language is interfered by Mandailing language.

Media is one of the tools that helped shape how cultural practices develop in the midst of human life, one of which is through advertising. This can be the opposite, developing cultural practices also contribute to how advertising in this case are produced by advertisers. In the #KenapaNggak Axis Ad, which was just released in early May, it displays the realities that are happening in today's society, especially the character of today's young people. This reality is packaged in such a way by ad makers through Axis Ads #KenapaNggak. This paper is made using qualitative research. This type of research understands the phenomenon in the subject of research by describing it in the form of words and language. In this study the author will describe the form of the satirical approach used by advertisers on Axis Ads #KenapaNggak. Axis ads are consistent since 2008 making their advertisements by not displaying the shortcomings of other providers as competitors. Rather it displays something that is still relevant to the function or usefulness of the product. The method used is to use a humorous approach that is conveyed satire. The visualization displayed through visual slice of life, life style, and personality symbols, which were then combined into one on the Axis Ad #KenapaNggak is a form of mockery of producers to today's audiences as super active internet users.

Final project English Study Program, Faculty of Language and Arts Educations, University of PGRI Semarang. This final project is based on the study, which attempted to the analysis of the Figurative language in Niki – Nicole Zefanya selected songs and its contribution to teaching poetry. The three songs were Lose, Indigo,and La La Lost You. The main purpose of this study was to found the types, the dominations, and the meaning of figurative languages used in the three songs, and also the contribution to teach poetry. This study expected to be a source for the English teachers to teach Poetry. This study is qualitative research, which analyzed the types and meaning of the figurative language found in Niki’s songs lyrics using Kennedy, X.J. and Gioia. D.’s theory (2005). The data of the research were collected by listening, watching, reading, identifying, analyzing, and classifying. The result of the study was there were seven types of figurative language found in the study. And they were metaphor hyperbole repetition simile apostrophe paradox allegory. The contributions of this by using songs lyrics to teaching poetry was could make a positive, relax, and full attention learning, more focus and absorb the material, bringing a sense of community, Improving memory, and enhance their imagination.

Figurative language is a part of semantic. This research analyzed the figurative language used in the lyric of Awaken by Maher Zain. The aims of this research are to figure out the figurative languages used in the lyric of Awaken  and to analyze the contextual meaning of figurative language used in that song lyric. It is expected the result of this research will be useful for the reader especially in describing what figurative language is and what kinds of figurative language are. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The lyrics of song is got from kapanlagi.com entitle Awaken. The result found that there are some kinds of figurative language used in Maher Zain’s song entitle Awaken, such as hyperbole, rhetoric, repetition and personification. The contextual meaning of each figurative language is also clarified. The conclusion of this research is there are some kinds of figurative language use by Maher Zain in his song entitle Awaken.
