Kata Kunci: pendidikan karakter, bimbingan klasikal, peran konselor MEASURING THE RESULT OFTHE INTEGRATED CHARACTER EDUCATION IN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS Abstract: This study was aimed to evaluate the implementation of the character education in Junior High School and to measure the result. The implementation of integrated character education in Junior High School in several cities in Indonesia has not shown satisfactory result. It was only at the cognitive level. The contents of character values integrated into a variety of subjects were just like "patches". They are only written in a lesson plan, without realization in the implementation. Most of the subject teachers who are entrusted with the content of character education integrated into the learning process, had limited ability to describe, actualize, and implement the mission. On the other hand, the counsellor who was specifically equipped with the transmitter role of character education was not involved at all. This could be seen in most junior high schools in Indonesia which did not provide a classical guidance service schedule. This study is expected to inspire the finding of an alternative of the character education model oriented to professional collaborative partnership between the counsellors and teachers implementing the character education. Keywords: character education, classroom guidance, the role of counsellor

Background: There is a scarcity of data on asthenopia and accommodative disorders in children in Ghana as optometrists sometimes fail to carry out comprehensive assessments because of the lack of appropriate instruments.Aim: To establish the prevalence of asthenopic symptoms and symptomatic accommodative disorders among Junior High School children in Cape Coast metropolis (in their habitual vision state) and to investigate if there are any associations between asthenopic symptoms and the disorders.Method: A prospective cross-sectional school-based study using a multistage sample of 627 participants aged 12–17 years from Junior High Schools in Cape Coast metropolis, Ghana, was conducted. Participants completed a reliable asthenopic symptoms questionnaire (Cronbach’s α = 0.866), and 220 participants who expressed two or more severe or very severe symptoms were selected for comprehensive accommodative system assessment over their habitual vision state. Results: The prevalence of symptoms of asthenopia (two or more severe or very severe) and symptomatic accommodative disorders were 35.1% and 17.4% respectively. For specific symptomatic accommodative disorders, the prevalence was as follows: 7.7% accommodative insufficiency, 4.5% accommodative infacility, 1.4% accommodative excess and 3.8% accommodative fatigue. There were significant associations between some specific accommodative disorders and some specific asthenopic symptoms even though these asthenopic symptoms overlapped in other accommodative disorders. Conclusion: Specific asthenopic symptoms do not discriminate between the presences of specific types of accommodative disorders. A comprehensive accommodative system assessment with appropriate instruments is relevant to the diagnosis and management of accommodative disorders to relieve asthenopic symptoms.

The program for strengthening character education is only carried out in several pilot schools so that there is not much information available to what extent character education has actually been carried out in other schools, especially in non-piloting schools. This study aimed to measure the feasibility of strengthening character education in non-piloting schools. The population in this quantitative descriptive study was teachers at junior high school in Malang. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The subjects involved in this study were six teachers of Junior High Schools 20 of Malang, Junior High Schools 27 of Malang, and Muhammadiyah 1 Junior High School. Data collection used questionnaires and analysed descriptively statistically. The results of the study showed that the three schools have implemented character strengthening programs seen from the ten assessment components i.e. pre-assesment, programme socialization, vision, programme design, class-based implementing, school culture strengthening, social partisipation, core value implementing, and evaluation. These results indicated that character strengthening has become a positive habit but not yet optimal. The results of this study can be used as a basis for identifying appropriate follow-up steps for improving achievement of character strengthening in schools.

Examination of the music opportunities available to students in the junior high schools of the early twentieth century lends historical perspective to current challenges facing middle level music educators. This article describes the specific music offerings at Lincoln Junior High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, from the school opening in 1923 to 1940, when financial challenges forced the reorganization of the music program. In many ways, the music curriculum at Lincoln Junior High School in Minneapolis was exemplary of the music experiences found in other junior high schools. The required curriculum was based on the general music model of the elementary school and included music appreciation and a strong emphasis on the development of music reading skills. Extracurricular “clubs” provided performance opportunities for young adolescent musicians. Choruses focused on preparing large-scale productions such as operettas and musicals, while instrumental groups participated in contests and festivals. Performances for school assemblies and civic groups provide evidence of the importance of connections to the community for junior high schools. The formation of the Girls’ Band at Lincoln in 1924 was unusual. In the absence of direct evidence, I postulate possible explanations for the founding of this unique ensemble.
