Abstract State-maintained Christian ethos schools are a prominent part of the educational landscape of England and Wales, and a growing body of empirical research has sought to access, study and interpret the voices of their students in order to contribute to a fuller understanding of life within these schools and their place in contemporary Britain. As part of this endeavour, this study focuses on what may be learnt from students’ prayer in a joint Anglican and Catholic Christian ethos secondary school. Following the identification of the school prayer board and intercessory prayers within school Eucharists as offering a significant contribution to the Christian ethos school, this study set out to explore and evaluate these prayer requests composed by students. Taking a sample of 212 prayers, an established analytic framework for the analysis and classification of intercessory prayer (the apSAFIP) was employed and other notable characteristics identified (including prayer type, ‘proclamations’, drawings, liturgical language and style). The findings draw attention to the distinctive profile of the prayer requests offered within the school in terms of the issues for which prayers are offered, and the religious language, expressions, and themes that shape these prayers. The study concludes by appraising the performance of the apSAFIP in this new context and by considering what may be learnt from these themes and linguistic forms about the spiritual and religious lives of the students.

Using genealogical inquiry, the author examines the conditions surrounding the construction of this document in relation to the conditions in the present. Relationships between the history of school prayer, the archive of Music Educators Journal, and relevant case law are investigated. Postsecularsim is described and explored as a possible theoretical framework for a future revision of the position statement.

The provision of Murotal Al Qur'an therapy aims to improve the life skills of students at SLBN 2 Palangka Raya as it is known that the Al Qur'an is a guide for the life of Muslims. The results of the research show that listening to the Murotal Al Qur'an can have a calming effect on the listener so that it can improve the quality of sleep for children with mental disabilities who have difficulty sleeping. Apart from psychological effects, physiological effects are also felt by using Murotal Al Qur'an therapy. In general, giving Murotal Al Qur'an Surat Ar Rahman therapy to students at SLBN 2 Palangka Raya has a calming effect. Some students tend to be active, like walking around in the room. Some may be asked to sit and listen to the chanting of the verses of QS Ar Rahman. Some of them prefer to be active, touch or hold objects in the school prayer room that attracts their attention. Some take the prayer mat and perform the prayer movements.

Abstract This article examines why the USA and Japan have different public reactions to the issues of public school prayer, despite the fact that the countries have almost identical constitutional frameworks on religious freedom. Recent religious freedom studies tend to centre around the debates that prioritize Western perspectives of religion in public schools. In contrast, this article focuses on the specific social and cultural contexts emphasizing their importance in understanding the governance issues arising from an ever-widening religious gap. This study particularly addresses the role cultural differences play in the unequal interpretations of religious freedom within different national backgrounds. Using a comparative case study analysis, I argue that these cultural differences directly impact the varying perspectives on religious freedom as applied in policy, law, and practice across the countries.

This chapter examines the background to and the holdings in the two seminal cases involving prayer and Bible reading in the public schools: Engel v. Vitale and Abington Township v. Schempp. It discusses how the justices were cognizant of the potential reaction to the holdings and sought to mollify that response by using particular language in their opinions. It then examines the public reaction to the decisions that precipitated a split among Protestants over church–state separation. Finally, the chapter considers the congressional efforts to amend the Constitution to permit prayer and Bible reading in the public schools.
