<p>Listening has been claimed as one of the most challenging skill to teach since many research found that the students, especially EFL students, still worried when having a listening  class. Listening still gives a fear for the students as long as they couldn’t deal with their worriness in joining listening class. It may be caused by their nescience in figuring out what strategy they could use while they are trying to do listening tasks given.</p><p>This study aims to investigate metacognitive listening strategies used by EFL students in listening class. This study is to find out what strategies mostly adopted by the students in listening class. Besides, this study also tries to propose a need mapping for constructing listening tasks. The students were English Departmenet students of Universitas Tidar. In this study, the data were collected by using Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire (MALQ) adopted form Vandegrift. The results revealed that the students mostly used problem-solving strategies while doing listening tasks. The use of this strategy implies that most of the students belong to effective listeners. On the other hand, the use of mental translation is the least use among the students. These results are needed  as one of the basic needs in developing listening tasks. The result could give a clear guidance and limitation for developing listening tasks for the students.  </p>

The present study investigated the metacognitive listening strategies among Saudi EFL medical students. The participants were 104 males and females, randomly selected to fill in the Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire (MALQ), developed and validated Vandergrift Goh, Mareschal, and Tafaghodtari (2006). The results revealed that participants use problem-solving and direct attention strategies more frequently than other metacognitive listening strategies. On the other hand, mental translation and personal knowledge strategies were reported to be the least used strategies. The pedagogical implications of these findings are discussed.

This paper uses the mathematical software Maple as the auxiliary tool to study the differential problem of four types of rational functions. We can obtain the closed forms of any order derivatives of these rational functions by using binomial theorem. On the other hand, we propose four examples to do calculation practically. The research methods adopted in this study involved finding solutions through manual calculations and verifying these solutions by using Maple. This type of research method not only allows the discovery of calculation errors, but also helps modify the original directions of thinking from manual and Maple calculations. For this reason, Maple provides insights and guidance regarding problem-solving methods.

Every family member has different needs from one another. Children are the most important members of the family, especially in completing their needs. Each child has different basic needs. In the case of gender, sometimes boys are often prioritized over girls. But on the other hand girls also have many needs related to their nature as women. This various cases cause different need compliance that requires parents’ consideration. Therefore, parents need to accommodate their children needs which have gender diversity. In managing these children's needs, parents' creativity and understanding of their children are needed.

Comprehending English text is still regarded as hard for students. Metacognitive strategies have been considered effective in overcoming reading difficulties by many researchers. The objective of this study is to describe the application of three types of metacognitive reading strategies (global strategies, problem solving strategies, and support strategies) used by the students of Senior High School (SMAN) 1 Ingin Jaya, Aceh Besar. It is a descriptive qualitative study. Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies Inventory (MARSI) questionnaire suggested by Mokhtari and Reichard (2002) was used to collect the data. The result of the study revealed that the students generally showed moderate awareness of all strategies and held a preference of using Problem Solving Strategies, followed by Support Strategies and Global Strategies respectively. The study also showed that high performance students used the strategies more frequently than low performance students. It can be concluded that the more students aware of using metacognitive reading strategies, the better their performance is in reading skill. Therefore, teaching the students to use metacognitive strategies can be a solution in enhancing students’ reading ability.

For an entire school year 24 seventh-grade classes were taught problem-solving strategies by teachers with special training. In 14 of the classes the instruction was supplemented by calculators. Each problem-solving group performed significantly (p<.05) better than a control group of 18 classes on two of five problem-solving tests. The calculator group scored significantly higher than the control group on attitude toward problem solving and as well as the other two groups on paper-and-pencil computation. Responses to a teacher questionnaire indicated a high degree of satisfaction with the program.

It is not only that different dynamic assessment (DA) techniques evaluate different “learning potentials” of the individual; some such techniques do not evaluate any kind of learning potential. In particular, graduated prompts techniques, rather than evaluating learning potential of the individual, evaluate the level of his or her mastery of a certain problemsolving procedure. On the other hand, DA techniques that target the qualitative level at which the individual is able to learn a brand new problem-solving procedure evaluate indeed the individual’s general learning potential.

AbstractMetacognition, the observation of one's own thinking, is a key cognitive ability that allows humans to influence and restructure their own thought processes. The influence of culture on metacognitive strategies is a relatively new topic. Using Antonietti's, Ignazi's and Perego's questionnaire on metacognitive knowledge about problem-solving strategies (2000), five strategies in three life domains were assessed among student samples in Brazil, India, and the United States (N=317), regarding the frequency, facility, and efficacy of these strategies. To investigate cross-cultural similarities and differences in strategy use, nationality and uncertainty avoidance values were independent variables. Uncertainty avoidance was expected to lead to high frequency of decision strategies. However, results showed no effect of uncertainty avoidance on frequency, but an effect on facility of metacognitive strategies. Comparing the three cultural samples, all rated analogy as the most frequent strategy. Only in the U.S. sample, analogy was also rated as the most effective and easy to apply strategy. Every cultural group showed a different preference regarding what metacognitive strategy was most effective. Indian participants found the free production strategy to be more effective, and Indian and Brazilian participants found the combination strategy to be more effective compared to the U.S. participants. As key abilities for the five strategies, Indians rated speed, Brazilians rated synthesis, and U.S. participants rated critical thinking as more important than the other participants. These results reflect the embedded nature and functionality of problem solving strategies in specific cultural environments. The findings will be discussed referring to an eco-cultural framework.

Designers have been known to seek analogical inspiration during design ideation. This paper presents an experiment that studies the types of analogies that most impact design creativity, as well as the time during problem solving when it is most effective to seek such analogical stimulation. This experiment showed that new information that was highly similar to the problem affected problem solving even if the information was given before problem solving began. On the other hand, new information that was distantly related to the problem only affected problem solving when it was presented during a break after problem solving had already begun. These results support the idea that open goals increase the likelihood that distantly related information become incorporated into problem solving. Functional principles found in the problem-relevant information given were also found to prime solutions in corresponding categories.

The understanding of dynamics of self regulation in working women who on one hand are always under divergent pressures of performances and meet diverse kind of expectations on the other hand show relatively better volitional controls over their behavior, becomes important. This study examined the links between self regulation and cognitive functions in a sample of 318 working women. Cognitive functions were assessed through problem solving and cognitive interference. Results indicated that there is highly positive and significant association between self regulation and problem solving capacity (P< .01) and the capacity to handle cognitive interference (P< .01). Additional analysis demonstrated that women with sharp cognitive functions were high on self regulation as compared to women with disrupted cognitive functions.

Poverty has many definitions, parameters, and standards. From the viewpoint of Islam, many theologians define and measure poverty by various terms and sizes. The difference among theologians’ opinion is caused by poverty terms contained in the Qur’an and Hadits. “Fakir” and “poor” have many meanings. It allows a wide interpretation of the verse and word from theologians. It is also seen from the regulation point in Indonesia, there are many definitions, standards and parameters of poverty. The difference of point of view on determination of poverty criteria and regulations according to Islam in Indonesia shows that the ways of ijtihad by theologians and the government elements is very open. The absence of standard stipulation held, encouraging the writer to conduct a comparative research in this paper; through literacy research. Syafi’i sect does not specify a quantitative standard for poverty. Poverty is only categorized on requirement. As long as people are not able to cover 50% of their basic needs, they are called as fakir. If people are only able to cover close to 70% of their basic needs then they are categorized as poor. Meanwhile, according to Hanafi sect, the qualitative standards turned to the Syafi’i sect. Poor conditions are more severe than the fakir. Besides,the quantitative standard of poverty is one nisab of zakat or the equivalent of 85 grams of gold. On the other hand, BPS and BKKBN formulate the concept and standard of poverty by economic concepts. Poverty is conceptualized as the inability of someone to meet basic consumption needs of the formulation adapted to local conditions respectively.
