The need for clean water continues to increase with changing times and the passage of time, however, clean water that is suitable for consumption is not easily available in some areas, considering that the physical conditions of regional geomorphology and hydrology have different forms. Water that is suitable for drinking must be clean and minimal from pollutant loads and substances that can interfere with the health of the body, this is different from the water obtained by people in Rantau Karya Village, Geragai District, Tanjung Jabung Timur Regency, because the hydrological conditions of the area are dominated by peatlands so that the water consumed is included in peat water, where the majority of the people use dug well water, therefore a simple technology is needed in dug well water treatment by utilizing local wisdom filter media. The results showed the efficiency of removal of organic substances (KMnO4) where the initial parameter was 22.5 mg / l to be 11.218 mg / l. The efficiency of turbidity reduction is 56%, where the initial result of the turbidity parameter is 31 NTU and the final result is 15 NTU, and the final pH of well water is 6.26, where the initial test shows the number 5.6. Each thickness of the filter media to get optimum results with a thickness of 15 cm.

The sago fiber waste is promising as an active carbon material which has a high adsorption in purifying water process. The objective of this research was to make activated carbon from sago fiber waste to be applied for water purification and iron (Fe) adsorption with various of contact time. The carbon activation process uses Phosphoric Acid (H3PO4) and calcined at 800 °C for 2 hours. After drying, then analyzed the water content and ash content. Furthermore, surface morphology testing was carried out using SEM. The application of activated carbon was carried out in dig well water purification and filtering iron (Fe) based on variations in contact time of 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes and 40 minutes. Analysis of water content of activated carbon was carried out 3 times with an average value of 3.9662%. Ash content analysis aims to determine the metal oxide content in activated carbon. Analysis of the ash content of activated carbon was carried out 3 times with an average value of 5.3239%. The average value of ash content meets the quality standards of activated carbon SNI 06-3730-1995 where the standard value of ash content for powdered activated carbon is a maximum of 10%. SEM test results show that the surface of the activated carbon is porous but the size is not uniform. The level of Ferrium (Fe) in water that has gone through the purification process using activated carbon. The most effective contact time was obtained, namely 20 minutes and had met the threshold requirements for water turbidity levels according to Minister of Indonesia health. This means that activated carbon from sago fiber is able to adsorb the material contained in water and also very capable in  picking up some bad contents of cloudy and polluted water.

CORRECTION: The correct PDF for this article was loaded on 22/04/2013.The study was carried out in the vicinity of the Tinau river, Rupandehi, Nepal from July 2011 to June 2012. Ten number of shallow tube wells (STWs) of depths 5.18 m to 7.62 m, four shallow tube wells (STWs) of depths 28.96 m to 36.58 m. from Amawa and Farsatikar Village Development Committees and one dug well (DW) from Butwal Municipality were selected for the purpose of this study. The depth of the STWs was different but many STWs were of 6.09 m deep. The DW was of 18.29 m. The information was collected from the owners during field visit of the sites. A standard questionnaire was prepared and asked to the affected persons. The site observation was done in the dry season as well as in the rainy seasons. It was found that the extraction of riverbed materials from the river channel and the flood plain area has adversely affected the aquatic environment of the Tinau river. Massive extraction of the riverbed materials from this river started after the enforcement of local governance act, and regulation 1999. The income generated from the riverbed materials is quite enough. This is one of the major sources of income generation of DDC Rupandehi and the VDCs attached to this river (from Butwal to Bethari). The depth of the river increased due to extraction activities as a result groundwater table lowered. The STWs having depth of 5.18 to 7.62 m stopped discharging water from the aquifer in the dry season. Similarly DW of Butwal municipality having depth of 18.29 m stopped discharging water at dry season. But the STWs of depths from 28.96 m to 36.58 m. located at the same area/site were not affected by the extraction in the Tinau river. The people, who are residing on the bank of the river Tinau, suffered from drinking water problem because they are using the water from STWs. The effect is directly facing the people of low and medium level having low income generation. The extraction activity is going on and the deficit of water availability in STWs and DW is common in the vicinity of the Tinau river especially in the upstream (from Butwal to Paschim Amawa), whereas there is less effects of riverbed extraction for STWs of depths more than 27.43 m in the same sites. AbstractIn this work, the active carbon adsorption and TiO2/UV decolorization of black liquor were studied through experimental analysis (planned using Design of Experiments), modelling and optimization (with Response Surface Method and Differential Evolution). The aim is to highlight the importance of optimization methods for increasing process efficiency. For active carbon adsorption, the considered process parameters were: quantity of active carbon, dilution, and contact time. For TiO2 promoted photochemical decolorization the process parameters were: TiO2 concentration, UV path length and irradiation time. The determined models had an R squared of 93.82% for active carbon adsorption and of 92.82% for TiO2/UV decolorization. The optimization of active carbon resulted in an improvement from 83.08% (corresponding to 50 g/L quantity of active carbon, 30 min contact time and 200 dilution) to 100% (corresponding to multiple combinations). The optimization of TiO2/UV decolorization indicated an increase of efficiency from 36.63% (corresponding to 1 g/L TiO2 concentration, 60 min irradiation time and 5 cm UV path length) to 46.83% (corresponding to 0.4 g/L TiO2 concentration, 59.99 min irradiation time and 2.85 cm UV path length). These results show that the experiments and the subsequent standard RSM optimization can be further improved, leading to better performance.
