This article examines the historical role of marriage and wedding rituals in Vietnam, and how they have changed during Vietnam’s transition to the market. The authors focus on how changes reflect the society’s increasing dependence on the market, how this dependence impacts consumer well-being, and the resulting implications for public policy. Changes in the meanings, function, and structure of wedding ritual consumption are examined. These changes echo shifts in the national economy, social values, social relations, and gender roles in Vietnamese society during the transition. The major findings show that Vietnamese weddings are reflections of (1) the roles of wedding rituals as both antecedents and outcomes of social changes, (2) the nation’s perception and imagination of its condition relative to “modernity,” and (3) the role of China as a threatening “other” seen as impeding Vietnam’s progress toward “modernization.”

The paper, based on the analysis of data from sociological surveys, deals with problems of interaction between local self-government bodies and non-commercial organization (NCO). The article states that the process of forming partnerships between local governments and NCOs is in the process of being institutionalized. The collaboration initiative is more in the hands of the non-profit sector. Despite the generally favorable NCO-climate in the Republic of Bashkortostan, the attitude of local governments towards the non-profit sector as an equal partner in solving social problems and working with the population is developing at a rather slow pace. An important direction is to increase public confidence in the NCO through the development of civil sector information system to provide the best information to society.

In the article, which continues the presentation of the methodology for analyzing the financial stability of a commercial organization within the framework of a new paradigm of analysis, the possibilities of deductive and axiomatic justification of algorithms for constructing criterion functions of financial equilibrium, which are a necessary element of this methodology, are considered. The proposed concept of financial equilibrium is based on general scientific ideas about the equilibrium state of the system. As important examples, the criteria of the financial equilibrium functions arising from the rules of law governing the conditions of insolvency (bankruptcy) and liquidation of commercial organizations are presented. A general algorithm for classifying financial situations is proposed, which is based on the distribution of risks of insolvency and liquidation of commercial organizations by possible situations and reflects this distribution using the values of criteria functions.

Background and Objectives: Leadership positions in academic medicine lack racial and gender diversity. In 2016, the Council of Academic Family Medicine (CAFM) established a Leadership Development Task Force to specifically address the lack of diversity among leadership in academic family medicine, particularly for underrepresented minorities and women. approach: The task force was formed in August 2016 with members from each of the CAFM organizations representing diversity of race, gender, and academic position. The group met from August 2016 to December 2017. The task force reviewed available leadership development programming, and through consensus identified common pathways toward key leadership positions in academic family medicine—department chairs, program directors, medical student education directors, and research directors. consensus development: The task force developed a model that describes possible pathways to several leadership positions within academic family medicine. Additionally, we identified the intentional use of a multidimensional mentoring team as critically important for successfully navigating the path to leadership. Conclusions: There are ample opportunities available for leadership development both within family medicine organizations and outside. That said, individuals may require assistance in identifying and accessing appropriate opportunities. The path to leadership is not linear and leaders will likely hold more than one position in each of the domains of family medicine. Development as a leader is greatly enhanced by forming a multidimensional team of mentors.

Female and male physicians practice medicine differently. Female physicians engage in different communication styles, allocate more time to preventative care, and show different leadership qualities. Because gender diversity is still lacking in the top academic and clinical positions, medical organizations are not fully benefiting from these strengths. This chapter will identify three barriers that prevent women from advancing to these positions: the double burden syndrome, sexism and sexual harassment, and gender bias. This chapter will take a critical look at organizational culture and propose changes that can contribute to the pursuit of gender equity.

This chapter traces the engine of the pioneers' success and discusses their earlier lives, hinting or reflecting on how these experiences may have shaped their research. It begins by analyzing how the pioneers' were influenced by the communities where they grew up. Looking at the pioneers' families as a whole, even though this generation for which unprecedented university expansion brought rare opportunities for upward mobility, the chapter examines the pioneers' working-class families and old Oxbridge intellectual aristocracy. It notes that some of the key factors which brought them opportunities were due to national social changes and international events. The chapter also looks at how the older generation generally benefitted from Second World War experiences that took them out of their social-class cocoon. The chapter then discusses the pioneers who chose to explore other cultures rather than to research their own communities. It emphasizes social class injustice, racism, and gender injustice.

A study of the history of the Ukrainian national liberation movement of the 20th century involves explaining not only global processes and milestones, but, crucially, the role of specific figures in this movement in the context of real-time political circumstances and social changes. The proposed article is based on a sufficiently wide source base, first of all, on documents of the Soviet special services, mostly unpublished. The author considers his task to show the spiritual and ideological integrity of the character of Mykhailo Soroka, his high intelligence, thorough education, European thinking, his leadership qualities, firmness in defending his views and ignoring the insidious KGB temptations, a talent of the organizer, tolerance in comradely relations, self-initiation to the majestic prospect of creating an independent democratic Ukrainian state. An important component of M. Soroka's personal life was his marriage to a well-known member and regional leader of OUN Kateryna Zarytska. A brief account of her unique biography fails to outline the multifaceted nature and tragedy of this person's selfless. However, it clearly illustrates the anti-humanity of the Bilshovyk-communist regime. M. Soroka's speech at the trial of 1953 in Syktyvkar deserves special attention. It was an indictment of the Soviet regime. He stressed that every nation has the right to a dignified life with "full freedom of conscience, thought, speech and assembly." Moreover, he can get it only in an independent state. Soroka considered the ancestry of disobedience and a sense of justice as an instrument of achieving this aim. He stated that "if we are not attacked, we certainly do not need to defend ourselves." Keywords: Soroka, Zarytska, arrest, court, detention, OUN-North, uprising, independent Ukraine, rehabilitation.
