The study used a quantitative research by using experimental factorial design 2x2. The data were taken from 80 second semester students at English Language Education Study Program at STAIN. The result of the study revealed that the mean score of post-test in implicit instruction on students’ sociopragmatic was 80.000 while explicit 92.550. Meanwhile, the mean score of post-test in implicit instruction on students’ pragmalinguistic was 83.000 while explicit 95.5000. It could be concluded that explicit has better effect to teach refusal strategies than implicit instruction on students’ sociopragmatic and pragmalinguistic competence based on the difference between the means score on implicit and explicit.

The study uses descriptive quantitative research. The population of this research is the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kragan Rembang. The writer takes VII I as experimental group that consists of 36 students and VII D as control group that consists of 36 students as sample. The writer found that the mean score for experimental group in pre-test is 71.44, and after this class is given a treatment by using selfie photos, the result of post-test is 81.33. The mean score for control group in pre-test is 70.22, and the post-test score is 73.89. The writer uses t-test formula to know the significant difference of the ability to express the fact between the students taught using selfie photos and those taught without using selfie photos. The t-test score is 3.455 for 5 percent (0.05) alpha level of significance. The percentage of t-table 5% is 1.99. The calculation shows that t-test is higher than t-table (3.455>1.99). It shows that there is significant difference of the ability to express the fact of the seventh grade studentsat SMP Negeri 1 Kragan Rembang those taught using selfie photos and those taught without using selfie photos. This paper reports the expereince of carrying out a study on applying youtube video for writing of descriptive text in EFL Class. The purpose of this research was to find out whether the videos can develop students’ ability in writing descriptive text or not.  The study took place in the time before and during the covid-19 emergence. As quantitative research, this study applied pre-experimental design. The participant of this research was the 1st year students of one of the prominence senior high schools in Manado, Indonesia. They were 26 students of language class. The results indicated that the mean score of the post-test is significantly higher that of the pre-test. This points out that the use of YouTube video in teaching the writing of descriptive text is effective. However, the emergence of Covid-19 pandemic influenced the implementation of intervention that later affected students’ achievement. The result of this study is not fully in line with the outcome of the previous studies which hypothetically resulted in two to four gains of scores. In addition, it implies that the use of YouTube video in this pandemic transition period seems to be helpful mostly to low level students as they displayed higher gains. Besides, this study denotes the challenges for teachers and students in the Covid-19 pandemic era namely the competence in online learning, and the internet connectivity access and learning mode system.

The English language is one of the international languages used for communication and learning worldwide. In Vietnam, English is taught as a second language in schools from elementary to advanced levels. In learning a certain foreign language, the autonomy of learners has become a vital subject for the past 30 years. This research surveys the autonomy of non-language-major-students in learning English in Ho Chi Minh City University of Education. The quantitative research method uses descriptive statistics and T-test. A group of 258 students (61 males and 197 females) took part in answering two questionnaires on learners' autonomy in learning English and the roles of lecturers and students in developing learner-autonomy in learning English. The results showed that the students were not familiar with the term learning autonomy. However, students were aware that they played a fundamental role in improving this ability. They also believed that the lecturers determined their English learning process. Thence, we propose solutions for the non-language-majors to improve their autonomy in learning English.
