Poverty is a complex phenomenon involving objective as well as subjective aspects. In reality, 9 out of 10 flagship studies from social sciences assess only objective indicators reducing poverty's multidimensional nature into solely economic characteristics. Comparing the effects of several distinct poverty operationalizations on the same outcome variable, we found substantial heterogeneity in the estimates. Neglecting the fact that different poverty operationalizations produce different results can generate misleading narratives when interpreting the findings. A researcher should be well-aware which poverty operationalization is the most suitable for their research purposes prior to the data collection. In case this is hard to determine, we aim to encourage researchers to perform sensitivity analyses based on different poverty operationalizations in order to inspect how these choices shape their outcomes.

Many outcome variables in developmental psychopathology research are highly stable over time. In conventional longitudinal data analytic approaches such as multiple regression, controlling for prior levels of the outcome variable often yields little (if any) reliable variance in the dependent variable for putative predictors to explain. Three strategies for coping with this problem are described. One involves focusing on developmental periods of transition, in which the outcome of interest may be less stable. A second is to give careful consideration to the amount of time allowed to elapse between waves of data collection. The third is to consider trait-state-occasion models that partition the outcome variable into two dimensions: one entirely stable and trait-like, the other less stable and subject to occasion-specific fluctuations.

Behavioral research increasingly uses accelerometers to provide objective estimates of physical activity. This study extends research on methods for collecting accelerometer data among youth by examining whether the amount of a monetary incentive affects enrollment and compliance in a mail-based accelerometer study of adolescents. We invited a subset of adolescents in a national web-based study to wear an accelerometer for seven days and return it by mail; participants received either $20 or $40 for participating. Enrollment did not significantly differ by incentive amount. However, adolescents receiving the $40 incentive had significantly higher compliance (accelerometer wear and return). This difference was largely consistent across demographic subgroups. Those in the $40 group also wore the accelerometer for more time than the $20 group on the first two days of the study. Compared to $20, a $40 incentive may promote youth completion of mail-based accelerometer studies.

Famine, a complex phenomenon with multifactorial causes, produces starvation and associated diseases resulting in unusually high mortality from a lack of food. Devastating famines in sub-Saharan Africa in the 1980s may have provided an impetus for scholars to find additional analytical tools for predicting famines. Two predominant theories of famines causality are (1) food availability decline (FAD), a supply failure; and (2) the entitlement approach based on a demand failure. Findings from both theories are applied to specific examples from Ethiopian famines to analyze the composition and effects of famine. The limited success of contemporary famines studies in anticipating famine suggests the need for improved analytical tools. Risk factor analysis, used successfully in the social sciences and the medical sciences to predict the occurrence of complicated phenomena, is developed to identify controllable, uncontrollable, and contributing factors to famine. Based on the experience of Ethiopia in 1983-86, categorical cutoff values for identifying a high risk of developing famine are formulated.

PurposeThrough comparative analysis with other social science disciplines, gaps are identified in the performance gaming literature of public administration as it compares to other social science disciplines in order to understand directions for future research in this space.Design/methodology/approachThis study involves a systematic review of the performance gaming literature, focusing on important drivers of performance gaming. Using Google Scholar, Web of Science, and ProQuest Central, the systematic review covers years ranging from 1990 through 2019 and revealed empirical studies that were deemed relevant based on whether an article was (1) an empirical study and (2) performance gaming or cheating behavior was the outcome variable. Out of the 81 articles surmised from the search, 51 were regarded as relevant by meeting these criteria.FindingsThe main finding is that public administration has primarily focused on drivers that are embedded in the performance system. The other social sciences (psychology and economics, in particular) focus mainly on individual factors, mostly cognitive in nature. Public administration has also looked at organizational drivers, though this is a burgeoning area. Scholars in public administration may benefit from the other social sciences by determining how individual drivers work within the context of public organizations and how these shape organizational behavior.Originality/valuePer my knowledge, the paper is the first to systematically compare the performance gaming literature of public administration to other social science disciplines. The paper provides a direction for this burgeoning area of research.

As a cultural dialogue, translation has two main ways: foreignization or domestication. These two translation methods are also reflected in the Indonesian translations of the Tao Te Ching. This paper attempts to analyze the performance of these two translation methods in nine books of Indonesian Tao Te Ching translations, including the title of the book and the main philosophical terms (Dao, De, Ziran, Wuwei). This is a qualitative descriptive study, with literature survey as the main method of data collection. The results show that the tension between the two translation methods in the nine versions of Indonesian translations of the Tao Te Ching are different, reflecting a complex phenomenon. Translation of the title of the book, mostly used combination between foreignization and domestication strategies, kept the book name Tao Te Ching and subtitles that expressed what kind of book was the Tao Te Ching in the translator’s mind. The translations of Dao had a trend of foreignization, while the translations of De were exactly the opposite. The translations of Ziran mostly used domestication strategy, and the translations of Wuwei had a trend of foreignization in some newest translations. Keywords: foreignization, domestication, Indonesian translations, Tao Te Ching STRATEGI FOREIGNISASI DAN DOMESTIKASI DALAM TEKS-TEKS TERJEMAHAN TAO TE CHING BERBAHASA INDONESIA AbstrakSebagai suatu bentuk dialog antarkultur, penerjemahan terutama memunyai dua cara, yakni foreignisasi dan domestikasi.
