In this paper, we aimed to test whether we could predict sport type (badminton or running) and marathon proficiency from the valence, form, and content of the athletes’ self-reported inner speech. Additionally, we wanted to assess the difference between self-talk during high intensity and low intensity exercise. The present study corroborated existing research – we were able to predict both sport type in Study 1 and intensity level as well as marathon proficiency in Study 2 from questionnaire data using machine learning models. In Study 1, we found that badminton players engage more in worry and anxiety-control while runners are more prone to task disengagement. Interestingly, it seemed in Study 2 that the more participants engaged in condensed, positive, and repetitive self-talk when not pushing themselves, the slower their fastest marathons and half marathons were. We discuss potential explanations for these findings and make suggestions for future research.

The importance of supplements used with exercise is increasing day by day. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the effects of creatine monohydrate (CrM) supplementation with different intensities of exercise on oxidative stress through dynamic thiol disulfide homeostasis. Fourty two BALB/c mice were used and randomly divided into 6 groups; control (C), low-intensity exercise (LIE), high-intensity exercise (HIE), C+CrM (4% of daily diet), LIE+CrM, and HIE+CrM groups. Exercise groups were performed low-intensity (8m/min/30min/day) and high-intensity (24m/min/30min/day) exercise on a mouse treadmill for 8 weeks. At the end of the experimental period, the thiol disulfide homeostasis levels analyzed by using a new automated measurement technique. When the native thiol and total thiol values were examined the difference between the groups was statistically significant (respectively, p=0.029, p=0,035). Creatine intake with exercise decreased native thiol and total thiol levels. However, serum disulfide levels were lower in LIE+CrM compared to other study groups, but there was no statistically significant difference. It is thought that creatine supplementation with exercise reduces the thiol-disulfide homeostasis burden of the organism, and that after the depletion of creatine stores, the sustainability of oxidant-antioxidant homeostasis can be extended, thus prolonging the duration of antioxidant resistance.

We hypothesized that the O2 uptake (Vo2) response to high-intensity exercise would be different in children than in adults. To test this hypothesis, 22 children (6-12 yr old) and 7 adults (27-40 yr old) performed 6 min of constant-work-rate cycle-ergometer exercise. Sixteen children performed a single test above their anaerobic threshold (AT). In a separate protocol, six children and all adults exercised at low and high intensity. Low-intensity exercise corresponded to the work rate at 80% of each subject's AT. High-intensity exercise (above the AT) was determined first by calculating the difference in work rate between the AT and the maximal Vo2 (delta). Twenty-five, 50, and 75% of this difference were added to the work rate at the subject's AT, and these work rates were referred to as 25% delta, 50% delta, and 75% delta. For exercise at 50% delta and 75% delta, Vo2 increased throughout exercise (O2 drift, linear regression slope of Vo2 as a function of time from 3 to 6 min) in all the adults, and the magnitude of the drift was correlated with increasing work rates in the above-AT range (r = 0.91, P less than 0.0001). In contrast, no O2 drift was observed in over half of the children during above-AT exercise. The O2 drifts were much higher in adults (1.76 +/- 0.63 ml O2.kg-1.min-2 at 75% delta) than in children (0.20 +/- 0.42, P less than 0.01).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Purpose Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is an intervention approach that can promote communication and language in children with multiple disabilities who are beginning communicators. While a wide range of AAC technologies are available, little is known about the comparative effects of specific technology options. Given that engagement can be low for beginning communicators with multiple disabilities, the current study provides initial information about the comparative effects of 2 AAC technology options—high-tech visual scene displays (VSDs) and low-tech isolated picture symbols—on engagement. Method Three elementary-age beginning communicators with multiple disabilities participated. The study used a single-subject, alternating treatment design with each technology serving as a condition. Participants interacted with their school speech-language pathologists using each of the 2 technologies across 5 sessions in a block randomized order. Results According to visual analysis and nonoverlap of all pairs calculations, all 3 participants demonstrated more engagement with the high-tech VSDs than the low-tech isolated picture symbols as measured by their seconds of gaze toward each technology option. Despite the difference in engagement observed, there was no clear difference across the 2 conditions in engagement toward the communication partner or use of the AAC. Conclusions Clinicians can consider measuring engagement when evaluating AAC technology options for children with multiple disabilities and should consider evaluating high-tech VSDs as 1 technology option for them. Future research must explore the extent to which differences in engagement to particular AAC technologies result in differences in communication and language learning over time as might be expected.

This study examined the effects of daily low-intensity exercise following acute stroke on mass, Type I and II fiber cross-sectional area, and myofibrillar protein content of hind-limb muscles in a rat model. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 groups (n = 7-9 per group): stroke (occlusion of the right middle cerebral artery [RMCA]), control (sham RMCA procedure), exercise, and stroke-exercise. Beginning 48 hours post-stroke induction/sham operation, rats in the exercise group had 6 sessions of exercise in which they ran on a treadmill at grade 10 for 20 min/day at 10 m/min. At 8 days poststroke, all rats were anesthetized and soleus, plantaris, and gastrocnemius muscles were dissected from both the affected and unaffected sides. After 6 sessions of exercise following acute ischemic stroke, the stroke-exercise group showed the following significant (p < .05) increases compared to the stroke-only group: body weight and dietary intake, muscle weight of affected soleus and both affected and unaffected gastrocnemius muscle, Type I fiber cross-sectional area of affected soleus and both affected and unaffected gastrocnemius muscle, Type II fiber cross-sectional area of the unaffected soleus, both affected and unaffected plantaris and gastrocnemius muscle, Type II fiber distribution of affected gastrocnemius muscle, and myofibrillar protein content of both affected and unaffected soleus muscle. Daily low-intensity exercise following acute stroke attenuates hind-limb muscle atrophy in both affected and unaffected sides. The effects of exercise are more pronounced in the soleus and gastrocnemius as compared to the plantaris muscle.

The purpose of this article was to demonstrate the difference between a pandemic plan’s textual prescription and its effective processing using graphical notation. Before creating a case study of the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) of the Czech Republic’s pandemic plan, we conducted a systematic review of the process approach in pandemic planning and a document analysis of relevant public documents. The authors emphasized the opacity of hundreds of pages of text records in an explanatory case study and demonstrated the effectiveness of the process approach in reengineering and improving the response to such a critical situation. A potential extension to the automation and involvement of SMART technologies or process optimization through process mining techniques is presented as a future research topic.

(1) Background—The application of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) combined with low-intensity exercise to the elderly can be more efficient than low-intensity exercise only in terms of delaying the loss of muscle mass. We aimed to assess the adjunct of NMES to low-intensity lower limb strengthening exercise to prevent falls in frail elderly for a relatively short period of 4 weeks. (2) Methods—Thirty elderly women aged 65 or above were randomly categorized into three groups: control group (CON, n = 8), exercise group (EX, n = 10), and NMES with exercise group (EX + NMES, n = 9). The exercise group took part in a lower limb strengthening exercise program for one hour three times a week for four weeks. Furthermore, the NMES with exercise group had added NMES stimulation when exercising. The limbs’ muscle mass, body fat mass, calf circumference, grip force, five times sit-to-stand test, timed up-and-go test (TUG), one-leg stand test, and Y-balance test (YBT) were evaluated at baseline and 4 weeks after. (3) Results—Comparisons between the three groups showed that the TUG was significantly decreased and the YB was significantly increased in NMES with exercise group (p < 0.05). (4) Conclusions—These results suggested that a combination of NMES stimulation and exercises was more helpful in strengthening balance than exercises alone in the short term.
