Cultural Barrier at the time of Menstruation: Perspective from Girl Students

Culture is man-made; one belief system originated with the human civilization. It has bounded the people within one common belief system. Culture determines the personality of people. Here, the main objective of this study is to find out the cultural barriers to girls at the time of menstruation. The study was conducted among the 120 girls of secondary level school. The study found that 50% girls reported that they were deprived to carry out the daily activities like cooking and fetching water and more than 80% girls shared that they were deprived to go in religious places at the time of menstruation. The result founds that still the cultural practices have created the stigma and discrimination towards the girls at the time of menstruation which has direct effect in their personal and professional growth and development as well as it has also significantly affected in the menstrual hygiene management. So, there is need of massive awareness program to society about the negative impact of harmful cultural practices related to menstruation.

Belief system is strongly associated with the socio-cultural practices, family orientation, social environment, schooling of people. Some of the false belief and harmful practices are associated with the Chhaupadi system of Nepal. Chhaupadi is a social tradition related to "menstrual taboo" in the western part of Nepal for Hindu women, which prohibits them from participating in normal family activities during a menstruation period, as they are considered "impure". The main aim of this study is to identify the false belief and harmful cultural practices of Chhaupadi system in Nepal. The study was conducted among the girl students of grade 9 and 10 by using the structured questionnaire survey. The study found that there are many false belief system and harmful cultural practices were associated with Chhaupadi system. The menstrual women were not allowed to enter into the kitchen, not allowed to cook food, not allowed to touch the drinking water, not allowed to enter into the religious places and not allowed to participate in the social functions. The false belief system and harmful cultural practices had negatively affected in the health and hygiene and personal and professional growth and development of women and girls, so such belief system and practices should be removed from the society though the series of orientation and wider level of community discussion.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the cultural practices that pose a barrier to female educational attainment of the Oroko people. Looking at the cultural barrier to the education of the girl child and its implication on educational attainment, the researcher realized that culture has played a great part in the attainment of education of the girl child in the Oroko land. The population of this study was made up of three secondary schools in the Kumba municipality. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire. Data was analyzed by the use of descriptive and inferential statictics. The results showed that cultural barriers such as early marriages and the preference of the boy child’s education over that of a girl child affect the girls’ educational attainment in the Oroko land. Based on the finding the researcher recommended that the government should open schools in all villages so as to encourage the girls to go to school, the few girls who are already in school should try and impress their parents so that can change their mentality and conception that they have concerning female education.

Introduction: Adolescent girls often lack knowledge regarding reproductive health includingmenstruation which can be due to socio-cultural barriers in which they grow up. It is importantto educate adolescents about issues related to menstruation so that they can safeguard themselvesand hold implications for professionals involved in improvement of reproductive health. The mainobjective of the study was to find out awareness regarding menstrual hygiene among girl studentsof a school in Chitwan. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in a school in Chitwan among girlstudents of school from grade 8, 9 and 10 from 2019 July to August 2019 after ethical approval. All thegirl students from grade 8, 9 and 10 were included into the study. Data were entered and calculationswere using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 20. Results: Among 184 adolescent girls, 156 (84.8%) were aware about the menstrual hygiene andmost of them 176 (95.7%) knew about the criteria of ideal absorbent to be used during menstruation.Likewise, 120 (65.2%) were aware regarding washing the genital organs, 137 (74.5%) were changingsanitary pad and 136 (73.9%) were disposing used sanitary pad. The mean age of girl students was14.48±1.259 years respectively. Conclusions: Awareness regarding menstrual hygiene was present among the girl students, butpractice for proper menustral hygiene was low compared to studies done in similar settings.

It is a problem worth thinking about whether the government’s environmental regulation policies can meet the residents’ requirements for environmental quality, and benefit the people. The study of the public’s subjective evaluation can more intuitively judge whether the government’s environmental regulation has realized “ecological benefits for the people”. Based on the data of the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) in 2013, this paper studied the impact of environmental regulation and environmental awareness on environmental governance satisfaction by an ordered probit model. The study found that environmental regulation has a significant positive impact on environmental governance satisfaction, while environmental awareness has a significant negative impact on environmental governance satisfaction. We also found that when public environmental awareness is taken into account, the positive relationship between environmental regulation and environmental governance satisfaction is affected. The robustness test proved this conclusion.

The powertrain is a very important subassembly in a car and is responsible not only for the automotive industry’s impact on the environment but also for the safety of people travelling by car and performing overtaking manoeuvres and joining traffic. In general, the powertrain is a combination of the drive unit and drive transmission, wherein the drive unit is responsible for the available driving force in the car’s wheels and for the car’s ability to accelerate when the throttle pedal is rapidly pressed at a constant gearbox ratio. The availability of the driving force reserve in the powertrain is the most important issue for the reason of safety of the people travelling by car. In the case of drive unit what they are of the combustion engines, the rapid pressing of the throttle pedal in the car acceleration process leads to a temporary deficiency in the driving force and in the powertrain’s output. The deficiency in the driving force has a negative impact on acceleration and driving comfort. In this paper, the authors assessed and analysed two different short-term compressed air supercharging systems for combustion engines with air supplied from a high-pressure tank. The analysis covered the response of the combustion engine with spark ignition to the gradual increase in pressure in the air-intake system. The assumption is that the applied short-term compressed air supercharging system could improve the driving force during the phase of the engine’s increasing crankshaft rotational speed. This helps to achieve the improved passenger car acceleration dynamics, depending on the supercharging method and throttle pedal exertion. When analysing the car’s acceleration dynamics, expressed by the shorter time of increasing the longitudinal speed from initial to final, it was possible to shorten the acceleration time. It is also possible to observe an improved driving force behaviour, especially during the first phase of acceleration.

Differences in structural resources and individual skills contribute to social-class disparities in both U.S. gateway institutions of higher education and professional workplaces. People from working-class contexts also experience cultural barriers that maintain these disparities. In this article, we focus on one critical cultural barrier—the cultural mismatch between (a) the independent cultural norms prevalent in middle-class contexts and U.S. institutions and (b) the interdependent norms common in working-class contexts. In particular, we explain how cultural mismatch can fuel social-class disparities in higher education and professional workplaces. First, we explain how different social-class contexts tend to reflect and foster different cultural models of self. Second, we outline how higher education and professional workplaces often prioritize independence as the cultural ideal. Finally, we describe two key sites of cultural mismatch—norms for understanding the self and interacting with others—and explain their consequences for working-class people’s access to and performance in gateway institutions.

This article is based on ethnographic fieldwork in Indonesia and will raise questions about the meaning that cultures ascribe to potentially dangerous natural spaces. By tracing the mythological and ritual life of the local clans of the Lamaholot and Ngada people, one can note that the entire cosmology and belief system of the people of Flores is tightly interwoven with the religious perception of space and place. Volcanoes play a key role in this belief system because the different clans see volcanoes as places of origin, though they also have a practical social function This article emphasizes the importance of volcanoes for individual and clan identity, and their function in the ideology of association and spiritual linkage between people, ancestors, and natural features. It furthermore examines the phenomenon of public confessions of guilt. These coincide with local interpretations of natural catastrophes as a result of the failure to respect local social values and norms and to fulfil religious duties. Consequently, the article argues, the idea of a dualism between humans and nature becomes irrelevant. Within this context, their reciprocal relationship with volcanoes enables clan groups in Flores to reconcile the unpredictability of nature with the dangerous and sometimes violent aspects of society.

The paper looks at the role of traditional foodways and related cultural practices in Oneida’s contemporary food sovereignty efforts, and the various understandings of the continuity of food and agricultural traditions in the community. The tribe’s Tsyunhehkw^’s (joon-hen-kwa) farm, whose name loosely translates into “life sustenance” in English, serves important cultural, economic and educational purposes. It grows Oneida white flint corn, which is considered sacred by the tribe and is used for ceremonial purposes, it grows the tobacco used for ceremonies and runs a traditional Three Sisters Garden. The Three Sisters – corn, beans and squash, are an important part of the Oneida creation story, as well as the vision of Handsome Lake – a Seneca prophet from the turn of the 19th century, who played an significant role in the revival of traditional religion among the People of the Longhouse.[1] They inform the work done at Tsyunhehkw^ to provide healthful food for the Oneida community. [1]The Oneida form part of the Iroquois Confederacy (as called by the French), referred to as the League of Five Nations by the English, or the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, as they call themselves. Haudenosaunee translates into the People of the Longhouse. The Confederacy, which was founded by the prophet known as Peacemaker with the help of Hiawatha, is made up of the Mohawks, Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayugas, and Senecas. It was intended as a way to unite the nations and create a peaceful means of decision making. The exact date of the joining of the nations is unknown and it is one of the first and longest lasting participatory democracies in the world (“About the Haudenosaunee Confederacy” 2019).

This study identifies and describes the local wisdom carried out by the coastal communities, especially the people of North Seram, Maluku in preserving the island and marine environment as well as the customary institutions in determining and guarding local wisdom of coastal communities to manage marine resources. The marine resource is started to weaken along with the development of modern technology. This paper provides contemporary phenomena regarding the weakness of customary laws and traditional institutions that regulate marine resources, including social values in the form of rituals, representing the relationship between humans and their environment. The protection of marine resources around them will be an important discussion to see the role of government and society in preserving marine and coastal resources. This study used a qualitative approach to produce descriptive explanations from reports, book reviews, and documents that describe theories and information of both past and present. The result is that the local wisdom maintained as superior cultural practices that are beneficial to human survival, especially in maintaining the sustainability and balance between humans and living objects.

The article analyzes modern design practices based on symbolic and ornamental motives of folk art and their modern actualization in ethno-artistic areas, reflecting the relationship of traditional aspects with innovative, symbolic translation of cultural experience in time and space, creating symbolic value images, enhancing emotional environment and creating new narratives. Symbols, as the basis of the existence of the people, reflect the ethno- national aspects of culture, is an opportunity to find yourself at the level of relationship with your people, your nation, traditions. The appeal to archetypes is a special methodological perspective in which the meaning of the future is created due to the transformation of the past into a symbol. What is relevant in modern Ukrainian realities is that the whole cultural paradigm is being reconsidered and new ways of national identification are being sought. Embroidery is marked by a special color and incredible ornamentation, complex performance technique, which is reflected in the symbols of sociocultural practices, immersing in the depths of traditional norms and values that encourage to feel, assimilate, preserve and transmit. In modern domestic discourse, design practices are thought of as aimed at transforming the cultural environment into the integrity of cultural and natural components. They serve as a basis for forming an idea of the world and building harmonious relationships with the world. And the use of symbols-amulets and a certain emotional color is a special process of self-identification and the foundation for the revival of national culture and spiritual values, seeing their own place in the global cultural and artistic space. Therefore, the use of ornamental symbols in design practice is the basis for the revival of national culture and spiritual values and the formation of a new promising direction of Ukrainian design. Among the spiritual heritage of Ukraine with its color and incredible ornamentation, complex technique is embroidery, which is reflected in the symbols-codes of modern socio-cultural practices
