The impact of rapidly escalating input prices of farm income, agricultural production, production adjustments, the general price level, the cost of living and capital requirements in the agricultural sector is a source of increasing concern to farmers, suppliers of capital to agriculture, and consumers of agricultural products. Record prices for agricultural commodities, such as feed grains and soybeans, partially masked the effects of a 52 percent increase in the index of prices paid for production items on net farm income during the period 1971–74. As agricultural machinery and farm buildings are replaced, world stocks of agricultural commodities are replenished, and domestic prices begin to decline, the magnitude of these cost increases will become more apparent.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between the purchase of insurance and economic growth among agricultural households. Design/methodology/approach Using survey data of the agricultural sector obtained from China over two years, the authors highlight the effect of job switching between farm and non-farm activities on the demand for insurance by applying the difference-in-differences and triple differences methodologies. Findings The results show that compared with farm income, non-farm income is associated with an increased (decreased) demand for insurance among households in Eastern (Western) China. The inequality in degree of economic development between the regions plays an important role in this finding. Both education and income exhibit a positive relationship with insurance demand for most regions. In addition, in 2007, regardless of farm or non-farm sector, switches are (except in the northeast region) associated with a significant increase in insurance expenditures. Households who switched from the farm to non-farm sector in 2007 are significantly negatively associated with insurance expenditures in the western region. Social implications Inequalities in the degree of economic development play an important role in insurance consumption. Originality/value The authors assess the determinants of insurance market development in the agricultural sector in China, characterized by inter-regional disparities in economic development.

Abstract This study is focused on analysing the economics of rice production by the small-holder female rice-farmers in Adamawa State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study described female rice-farmers’ socio-economic characteristics, analysed their technical and allocative efficiencies, and also assessed their economic efficiency in the area. Primary data were collected from 180 randomly selected female rice-farmers in Adamawa State using a semi-structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and stochastic frontier function were used analysing the data collected. Findings of the study revealed that the technical in-efficiency of the farmers is influenced by farming experience, education, and access to credit facilities. Also, the allocative in-efficiency of female farmers was influenced by education, household size, and access to credits. The result showed that education and access to credit facilities were common factors affecting the technical and allocative efficiency of female rice farmers in the area. The mean economic efficiency of the female farmers was 0.6. Therefore, the study recommends that the government and other actors in the agricultural sector should facilitate women’s access to credit facilities and other agricultural information relevant to rice production.

The cooperation has long been a pillar of the national economy in Indonesia, especially in developing the economy in rural areas. The Village Unit Cooperation (KUD) was developed to accelerate agricultural development, aimed at improving the farmers 'and peasants' farming in rural areas. KUD has also assisted in the success of regional development programs based on the agricultural sector, one of the plantation sub-sector, which is a partner of the plasma of palm oil farmer group of People’s Core Plantation (PIR) program throughout Indonesia. In the province of West Sumatra, the PIR of palm oil plantations began in the 1980s as a base of regional development, and now the age of harvest has made the age of plants unproductive. Accordingly, KUD Bukit Jaya in Dharmasraya District, one of the KUDs who wishes to apply replanting to farmer groups whose members,t found some obstacles in the implementation. This activity aims to facilitate KUD Bukit Jaya in order to realize the replanting activities in its working area. This action research is conducted using four stages of approach, namely: [1] introduction of problems with dialogical approaches, using interview techniques and discussions with cooperative managers as well as farmers whose gardens have to implement replanting; [2] the team analyzes the problems found and contacts the parties related to issues conveyed by cooperatives and farmers; the parties are insurance companies, bappeda as coordinator of cooperative technical service; [3] holding discussions and discussions with the cooperation, farmer groups and involved parties (insurance companies, cooperative agencies, and district government); [4] agreed on assistance for the preparation of cooperative and peasant group work plans for the preparation and implementation of replanting
