Scholarly attention on environmental literacy has been increased in recent years since the knowledge level and interest in environmental issues are decisive to engage in environmental protection functions. The study aims to investigate the environmental literacy level believing that understanding the level of environmental literacy will lead to influence attitudinal changes and actions of undergraduates towards environment. Total number of 650 Bachelor of Commerce undergraduates in state universities of Sri Lanka were selected as the sample of the study. A self-administered structured questionnaire was administered to collect data on the environmental literacy level, the interest and the activity engagement in environmental activities of the respondents. The regression-based path analysis was performed to examine the relationships among the constructs. Based on the descriptive analysis, there was low level of environmental literacy of the selected undergraduates in this study. The overall level of interest in environmental issues and the level of engagement in environmental activities were moderate. The regression-based path analysis indicated that environmental literacy as well as the environmental interest were significant predictors for environmental engagement. Further, interest in environmental issues mediated the relationship between the environmental literacy and the actual engagement in environmental activities. The study exclusively examined the relationship between the undergraduates' knowledge level of the environment and the interest in environmental issues and also examined the factors that influence undergraduates' participation in activities that promote sustainability of the environment, which has been neglected by prior studies. The results facilitate to recommend that the degree programmes should be integrated with environmental areas where such knowledge could lead to promote the interest and the action towards the environmental activities. Environmental issues have become a very dangerous to human beings. Human dependence on environmental elements forces humans to adapt into a very limited environmental system. The best way to maintain good relations with the environment is through conservation and preservation of the environment so that it is always sustainable. This starts from the starting point which is education. Various efforts implemented environmental education into the school curriculum system but the environmental problems among school students are still at an unsatisfactory level. Therefore, this study was conducted to identified the level of awareness and practice of environmental education as well as to measure the relationship between awareness and practice of environmental education among secondary school students in Kota Kinabalu. This study uses a questionnaire distributed in ten selected schools with a total of 500 respondents and data analysis was done by descriptive analysis. The results of this study found that there is no significant relationship between environmental awareness and practices on environmental culture among secondary school students in the district of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

Purpose This study examines the multidimensionality of the environmental literacy concept among university business students in Ghana. The study also investigates the relationship between students’ interests in environmental issues and knowledge levels of environment and assesses how these two constructs influence students overall environmental behaviour and actions. Design/methodology/approach Using a total of 591 business students from the University of Ghana Business School, the study uses exploratory factor analysis to examine the multidimensionality of environmental literacy concept. A structural equation modelling-based approach was used to examine the relationship among the study constructs. Findings Based on the factor analysis results, the study documents that environmental literacy concept can be grouped under four distinct factors (general environmental factors; industry-related factors; environmental assessment factors; and accounting-related factors). The regression results indicate a direct and positive relationship between students’ interest in environmental issues and their environmental literacy level. Also, students’ interest and their knowledge levels of environmental issues were found to be good predictors of actual students’ involvement in activities that promote sustainable environment. Research limitations/implications The conclusions of the study are based on only data from one public university, which limits the generalizability of the findings. Originality/value The study is unique as it is the first empirical study to investigate environmental literacy levels in higher education in the Ghanaian setting.
