The pace of development of almost all spheres of activity, as well as the acceleration of integration on the European continent and in the world, determine the relevance of the development of such educational programs, to ensure minimum workplace adaptation time. To achieve this goal, educational institutions that train for the hospitality industry need information about the criticalpoints in the stakeholder assessment of the programmatic results of the educational program. The study identified a critical need for the «soft skills», the most important of which are leadership, the ability to quickly solve problems, communication, teamwork, flexibility and personal interaction in a multicultural, dynamic and multilingual environment. The majority of students believe that soft skills are skills acquired in the workplace to navigate in their environment and good work. This view coincides with the assessment of respondents from another group. Managers also believe that soft skills contribute to better performance of official duties. The purpose of the survey was also to understand the awareness of students and managers of the hospitality industry about the importance of individual soft skills for work in enterprises that serve tourists and provide hospitality services. The questionnaires were asked to select the most important from the following set: leadership, teamwork, communication, work ethic, problem sol-ving, flexibility and interpersonal skills. A comparative analysis of the attitudes of students and managers to the importance of soft skills for employment and subsequent career advancement, to mastering certain soft skills during the period of study at the university and the function of certain skills to adapt a young specialist to dynamic working conditions in the field of tourism and hospitality showed that the two groups disagree on a number of issues. This suggests that educational programs and teaching methods need to be adapted to the requirements of the labor market. Keywords: soft skills, tourism, hospitality

As the possession of soft skills is becoming an essential part of the basic skill set of entrants, it is undoubtedly essential to research and develop these skills. The purpose of this study was to examine how students studying at the largest agricultural university in Hungary perceive their soft skills to be in line with employers’ expectations, i.e. whether demand matches supply, in what qualities students feel strong, what employers expect, how well supply and demand in the agricultural labor market match in terms of soft skills. Furthermore, whether educational institutions are able to develop these qualities in students and what other possibilities there might be to strengthen these qualities. The research results confirmed that the university students in the sample perceive the quality of their soft skills to be influenced by several factors, including age, gender and work experience. They show that women over 40 with work experience tend to have stronger emotional soft skills, while men of the same age who have not started their careers are stronger in leadership skills. The study also concluded that students do not feel that current schooling in institutions can strengthen the soft skills expected by the labor market (the average on a five-point Likert scale was 2.74), while the development of these soft skills was considered by respondents to be as important as the development of hard skills (agreement was very high with an average of 4.52 on a five-point Likert scale).

The study revealed that 45% respondents from the UCC did not want to work in the industry after graduation. A greater number of respondents, 85% in UCC, 90% in UENR and 92% in UDS believed a decision to invest in tourism and hospitality education career was worthwhile. Contrary to the above 50% of all respondents surveyed in the three institutions did not believe one could make good income whilst working in the industry. It is suggested that career counselling sessions be organized by tourism and hospitality industry players in the universities to woo students’ interest in the sector.

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are spreading rapidly and affecting almost all aspects of daily life, including businesses. The tourism and hospitality industry have been largely affected by advancements in ICTs. ICTs offer both opportunities and challenges for SMEs in the tourism and hospitality industry. Although large companies have been quick to adopt ICTs with rich resources, SMEs have been slow to adopt these technologies in general for various reasons, especially in developing countries. In this article, the authors explore the factors affecting the adoption of e-commerce by small hotels. To attain this purpose, a comparative case study was conducted in two small hotels, and their use of the Internet and the Web was explored. Conclusions derived from this study provide a meaningful contribution to the understanding of e-commerce adoption in small businesses in the tourism and hospitality industry.
