AbstractRural tourism represents the tourism in rural households, as well as holidays and stays in rural areas, events, festivals, recreations, productions and sales of handicrafts, crafts and agricultural products. Rural tourism is especially suitable for the revitalisation of degraded rural areas, ensuring their sustainability in the future, through creating new work places, increasing the diversity of occupations, rural crafts, and also preserving the landscape and nature. The development of rural tourism of the Republic of Serbia could play an important role in the country’s rural development and economic development in general. Thanks to its diverse relief and preserved nature, Serbia has significant resources in rural tourism at its disposal, but the number of negative factors that prevent more intensive growth of this economic branch is not negligible at all. One of the most important problems, but not unsolvable one, is the extinction of rural settlements in Serbia.

Rural tourism is a specific form of tourism, in which the main motive is travel to ecologically clean landscapes and the return of man to his historical roots. Rural tourism was created based on preserving the nature of rural areas and cultural and historical identity. Rural tourism is considered a new form of modern tourism together with already developed conventional forms of tourism. Rural tourism can be considered a very important form of sustainable tourism. Modern global trends such as nature protection, health care, especially during a pandemic, staying in nature, as well as preserving and reviving local traditions, customs, cultural and historical events and manifestations have contributed to the development of rural tourism in the world. Rural tourism successfully incorporates all these elements into its offer, which is why more and more tourists travel to rural areas. Interest in rural tourism arises from the desire to escape from urban centers pressed by industrialization and man-made environmental pollution. At present, rural tourism is one of the potentially important segments of the tourist offer on the Serbian market. Rural tourism includes a large number of activities that take place in rural areas. However, its potential is only partially valorized through rural tourism operators located in the central and northern regions of Serbia, as well as Vojvodina. Given that financial problems are often an obstacle in the realization of most ideas, financial support is a necessary lever for the development of rural tourism and rural regions in general. EU funds can be a chance to achieve financial support for the improvement of development potentials, better promotion, networking of tour operators and the implementation of tourism projects.

The relevance of the problem considered in this article is due to the positive impact of rural tourism on the preservation and development of rural areas, rational use of their resource potential, improving the welfare of the local population, reducing social tension, stimulating the development of farms and personal subsidiary plots, preserving folk crafts, culture and identity. Based on the analysis of the experience of rural tourism development in European countries, it is concluded that there is a high potential of this direction in the Republic of Bashkortostan. Among the municipal districts of the republic, the authors distinguish the Karaidel district, which has unique ecological and economic characteristics. The authors have identified the most promising direction for the development of rural tourism in the area under consideration – the development of a complex of guest houses providing accommodation and catering services for guests, as well as excursions, horseback riding, etc. The attractiveness for tourists in this type of accommodation lies in the possibility of living in peasant estates, as well as acquaintance with the traditions and rituals of the indigenous population of the republic. The article proposes recommendations for improving the efficiency of using the natural resource potential of rural tourism development in the Karaidel region of the Republic of Bashkortostan. The article presents the results of a SWOT analysis of the prospects for the development of rural tourism, offers directions for the development of rural tourism in the context of market segments and measures to promote the territory. The proposed measures for the development of rural tourism in the area: creation of an ecosystem (recreation, impressions, functional food); unification into a cluster (farms, accommodation facilities, recreation centers, local residents, personal subsidiary plots); development of a unique selling proposition; using the method of geoanalytics to analyze the target audience; certification of rural tourism objects, development of a culinary atlas of national dishes. Trends towards individualization of travel, the growing influence of ecology and ethics on the consciousness of the population are favorable factors for the development of rural tourism in the Karaidel region and the Republic of Bashkortostan as a whole.

The aim of this paper is to examine potentials and obstacles for the development of rural tourism in the Republic of Srpska. The analysis of both the potential and the integration of the entities crucial for the development of rural tourism, as well as the limiting factors that lead to stagnation in the development of rural tourism, is covered. Also, the goal is to explore the views of users and providers of rural tourism services and institutions dealing with the tourism industry on the state of the tourist offer and the limiting factors of its development. Rural destinations are becoming more attractive and more visited by tourists due to the natural environment, clean air, manifestations, possibilities of consuming traditional food and beverages, sports and various other activities. However, the ruin of rural tourism is reflected in the fact that it can violate the original form of rural space through various forms of environmental pollution of space, water and air. Preservation of existing resources is a necessity because the preserved environment is a prerequisite for the development of rural tourism. Republic of Srpska has seen a steady growth in the tourist visit in recent years, but there are still limiting factors for the development of rural tourism, which are most often seen in the poorly developed infrastructure of certain rural destinations, lack of accommodation capacities and the lack of qualified labor force, cooperation of several actors. It cannot be developed without the cooperation of regional and local authorities, non-governmental organizations, tourist organizations and businesses with local people. These actors should help the development of rural tourism through various subsidies, incentives, infrastructure construction and marketing.Republika Srpska faces the problem of insufficient promotion of tourism products, which reflects on the bad image of the entire tourism. The strong competition from the countries of the region, primarily Croatia and Montenegro, draws a large number of tourists, which points to the fact that the consumers of tourism services of the Republic of Srpska are in the highest estimate domestic guests of a poor standard of living. The development of rural tourism should be based on an integrated approach to development and care for resources. Only preserved resources can be a condition for the development of rural tourism now and in the future.

In recent years, tourism gentrification has made great progress in rural areas and has had significant impacts on these areas’ development, specifically in the domains of the economy, living standards, community, culture, and environment. Tourists play a key role in developing tourism gentrification in rural areas, but research investigating tourism gentrification in rural areas from the tourist perspective is scarce. To fill this gap, we focus on tourism gentrification and develop a measurement scale from the tourist perspective through multiple qualitative and quantitative steps. Our findings confirm that tourism gentrification in rural areas from the tourist perspective comprises eight dimensions: economic growth, enhanced environment, enhanced living standards, individual civilization, improved communication, promoted social environment, cultural appreciation, and improved individual quality. Through development and validation of the scale, we hope to offer a comprehensive referencing index of tourism gentrification in rural areas to policy makers and rural tourism practitioners.
