Islamic Schools strive to achieve educational excellence while integrating religious values into their curriculum. Yet, what makes an Islamic school really “Islamic” is not just the content of the curriculum, but also the teaching methods employed by the teachers who are teaching religious and non-religious subjects which affect the whole implementation of the integrated curriculum.  The aim of this paper is to investigate the potential benefits of using Quranic and Prophetic Teaching Methods (QPTMs) in non-religious classes on developing the characters of students. Semi-structured one-on-one interviews were conducted with 6 teachers teaching non-religious subjects in Islamic international schools in Malaysia. The interviews were transcribed and the data collected was analyzed by the researchers. The study analysis revealed that teachers of non-religious subjects in Islamic international schools believe that QPTMs contribute to students’ character development by inculcating characteristics and life skills. The findings of the study can draw the attention of integrated curriculum developers to the impact of including the QPTMs in teaching non-religious subjects in the inculcation of Islamic morals and developing the characters of the students. Key words: Islamic education, moral education, character development, teaching methods, integrated curriculum

An Islamic school that subscribes to an educative tradition is essentially one that sees compatibility between the inculcation of religious values and the acquisition of ‘modern’ knowledge and dispositions. This article argues that most Islamic schools in Indonesia reside in an educative tradition as evident in three main ways. First, most Islamic schools in Indonesia are keen to obtain knowledge from both religious subjects and modern ‘secular’ subjects. Secondly, an increasing number of Islamic schools have incorporated student-centred pedagogies so that their students do not simply learn by rote or memorisation. Thirdly, many Islamic schools provide a variety of student activities to develop the students’ life skills and leadership abilities so as to encourage their students to internalise and put into practice the principles and values they have learnt. Notwithstanding its promotion of an educative tradition, many Islamic schools in Indonesia face a perennial challenge in infusing Islamic principles and values into the teaching of modern ‘secular’ subjects. Keywords: Curricula, educative tradition, Indonesia, Islam, Islamic schools, pedagogy

Moral crisis phenomena experienced by our students are at alarming level. Educational institutions come as enlighten bodies to anticipate such situations by optimizing each part of learning environments in order to build student’s characters comprehensively. There is a need of breakthrough innovation of reliable management programs so that the students can get their ready-to-life skills to face the nowadays phenomena as well as the future ones. This article will elaborate the descriptive study of how to manage noble-character improvements particularly in Islamic School. The study shows that the management of improving noble character in the Islamic School must be performed through the following stagess: planning, organizing, mobilizing, and monitoring. The strategy that can be chosen to implement character-educations management in Islamic schools are as follows: 1) Achieve teachers' commitment to the implementation of moral education (teacher component), 2) Integrate character education into the curriculum (curriculum component), 3) Creating a financial plan in favour of the implementation of moral education (financing component), and 4) Designing and creating a school culture based on moral education (management component).

In this paper, we evaluate the impact of the education foundation law in the management system of the private Indonesian Islamic school. Islamic schools or madrasas are the goal of the Muslim community to educate their children where Islamic knowledge and sciences technologies are combined. The private madrasas were initiated, established and organised by the governing boards. Rapidly growing of the private madrasa but lack of management system makes the Indonesian government to stipulate law number 16 of 2001 and law number 28 of 2004. A total of 251 respondents from various foundations among six cities in Indonesia were contacted and interviewed. Instrument analysis was performed using the Rasch model approach through the Winsteps program. We observe that three groups of respondents have the same characteristics of answers. It indicates the tendency of respondents to more agree and practice the mentioned items. The respondents were found to face great difficulties when answering dual positions and authority of the governing boards. We conclude a small impact of the applicable law in the management system of the private madrasa.

Abstract This article demonstrates how Cognitive Grammar and Construction Grammar can prevent Chinese students learning Spanish from fossilizing mistakes in restrictive relative clauses at the A2-B1 level of the European Framework of Reference for Languages. To address this issue, first, relative clauses in Spanish and Chinese were contrasted and, second, tailored solutions based on Cognitive Grammar were proposed. Among the cognitive based tailored solutions, certain geometry forms, colours and basic mathematics metaphors were compared with syntactic characteristics such as noun order, subordination hierarchy or resumption. To elucidate the impact of such teaching methods, an experiment with 74 Chinese students was performed. The results indicate that the efficacy of the proposed materials is statistically significant and as such, the Chinese students avoid fossilized mistakes while producing subject, object and locative relative clauses in Spanish.

Communication through discussion and conversations is fundamental to human life; but when such discourse escapes the control of a teacher in the classroom, it becomes little more than chatter. This noise challenges teaching methods and the teaching stance with students. Yet, its impact on comprehension has rarely been studied. The aim of this literature review was to examine the research on the impact of classroom noise generated by chatter on students’ comprehension performance. We adopted the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Metanalysis) guidelines to examine this literature. This review covered a 10-year period (papers written between 2009 and 2019), with nine experimental studies selected from the 2,954 papers screened. In 89% of these nine studies, there were significant comprehension differences on all tests, revealed when comprehension took place in a noisy environment due to chatter. This review indicated an essential need for a field survey to better understand the impact of chatter on comprehension. Other studies are recommended to highlight any correlation between measured chatter and student comprehension in a real classroom environment.

This paper examines the problem of optimally splitting driver power demand among the different actuators (i.e., the engine and electric machines) in a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). Existing studies focus mostly on optimizing PHEV power management for fuel economy, subject to charge sustenance constraints, over individual drive cycles. This paper adds three original contributions to this literature. First, it uses stochastic dynamic programming to optimize PHEV power management over a distribution of drive cycles, rather than a single cycle. Second, it explicitly trades off fuel and electricity usage in a PHEV, thereby systematically exploring the potential benefits of controlled charge depletion over aggressive charge depletion followed by charge sustenance. Finally, it examines the impact of variations in relative fuel-to-electricity pricing on optimal PHEV power management. The paper focuses on a single-mode powersplit PHEV configuration for mid-size sedans, but its approach is extendible to other configurations and sizes as well.
