This study was conducted to evaluate the potential of sweet potato Ipomoea bata-tas powder (IbSPP), hot-water extracts (IbSPHWE) and crude ethanolic extracts (IbSPCEE) as growth pro-moter and immunoenhancer for tilapia cultured in hapa nets. Fish were divided ran-domly into four Treatments: T1 (control group) was fed a practical diet (PD) while T2, T3 and T4 were fed PD + IbSP powder (P), PD + IbSP hot-water extract (HWE), PD + IbSP Crude Ethanol Extracts (CCE), respective-ly. The growth indices and haematological profile of cultured fish were recorded after four months of feeding experiment. The final weight, weight gain, specific growth rate, condition factor, FCR, PER, FER were significantly higher in fishes that re-ceived PD +IbSPHWE than those that received either PD, PD + IbSPCEE or PD+ IbSPP only. The same trend was observed with the RBC, Hb, HCT, WBC and the PLT and its indices. The study has demonstrated that in-corporation of the hot-water extracts of I. batatas could improve the growth perfor-mance and increase immu-nocompetence of O. nilot-icus as evidenced by im-proved haematological pro-file.

<p>Liver is an organ with complex metabolism. When the liver is inflamed, cellular immunity will defend against inflammatory agents by stimulating immune cells to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS). Excessive ROS accumulation cause oxydative stress with increased  liver malondialdehyde (MDA) level. Some researches showed that purple sweet potato contain flavonoids (anthocyanins) that functioned as antioxydants. This study aimed to show the prophylactic effect of purple sweet potato extract to the liver MDA level of male Wistar rats induced by carrageenan.</p><p>This study used post-only control group method using 18 male Wistar rats divided into 3 groups: group of rats without treatment, group of rats induced by 0,1 ml of 1% carrageenan by intraplantar injection on day-8, and group of rats given with 872 mg/kgBW of purple sweet potato extract for 7 days and induced by 0,1 ml of 1% carrageenan. In the end of the study, the liver MDA levels were measured by Thio-Barbituric Acid method on each groups.</p><p>The results of One-Way ANOVA test showed there was no significant difference (p = 0,290) between group of rats without treatment (<em>x̅</em>= 207,50) and group of rats induced by carrageenan (<em>x̅</em>=233,17). Then, there is no significant difference (p = 0.978) between group of rats induced by carrageenan and group of rats given with prophylactic purple sweet potato extract and induced by carrageenan (<em>x̅</em>= 232,50).</p><p>The conclusion of this study is giving intraplantar injection of carrageenan can increase liver MDA level insignificantly and giving prophylactic purple sweet potato extract has an effect to decrease the liver MDA level of rats induced by carragenan insignificantly because it contains anthocyanins as antioxidants.</p><p> </p><strong>Keywords: </strong>Liver, <em>Ipomoea batatas</em> L., Malondialdehyde, Anthocyanins

Ganoderma lucidum (Leyss.:Fr.) Karst is one of the medicinal mushrooms, which possesses enviable antioxidant properties. Objective of this investigation was to evaluate antioxidant activity, reducing power, scavenging abilities on 1.1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals and chelating effects on ferrous ions of hot water extracts obtained from carpophore and spores of this mushroom. Hot water extract from carpophore (Gl-I) showed high antioxidant activity of 85.7 ? 0.7%, at 10 mg/ml, while antioxidant activity of hot water extract from spores (Gl-Is) was 9.2 ? 0.3% at 10 mg/ml. Reducing power of Gl-I reached a plateau of 3.4 ? 0.1 at 20 mg/ml, and 0.3 ? 0.0 at 20 mg/ml for Gl-Is. At 10 mg/ml, scavenging ability on DPPH radicals of Gl-I increased to 96.8 ? 2.5%, whereas Gl-Is scavenged DPPH radicals by 69.6 ? 2.5% at 10 mg/ml. Gl-I chelated 81.6 ? 3.6 % of ferrous ions at 20 mg/ml, while the chelating effect of Gl-Is was 73.8 ? 1.7%. The antioxidative activities of hot water extracts from carpophore and spores of the mushroom G. lucidum were concentration dependent and increased with an increase in the concentration.

Background: Cigarette smoke exposure is one of the source of free radicals that causes oxidative stress and decreases superoxide dismutase (SOD) level. Purple fleshed sweet potato is a type of food that contains antioxidants to neutralize oxidative stress.Objectives: To study the effect of purple fleshed sweet potato on superoxide dismutase (sod) level on rats exposed to cigarette smoke.Methods: This was a true experimental study with a post-test randomized control group design. The rats were randomized into 4 groups (6 rats in each group). The negative control group (K-) was treated with standard diet; the positive control group (K+) was treated with cigarette smoke exposure and standard diet; the treatment 1 (P1) group was treated with standard diet and purple fleshed sweet potato with the dose of 8 g / 200 g bw/day, and the treatment 2 (P2) group was treated with cigarette smoke exposure and purple fleshed sweet potato with the dose of 8 g /200 g bw/day.Results: There was a significant difference of SOD levels in each group (p=0.00) except between group K- and P1. Giving purple fleshed sweet potatoes increased SOD levels as much as 85.81±4.59 (P1). The K+ group had the lowest SOD level 22.34±3.98. The SOD level for K- group and P2 group was 82.27±4.59 and 67.73±6.68 respectively.Conclusion: The highest SOD level is on the treatment 1 group which is administered with purple fleshed sweet potato.

Cardiovascular disease is a disease caused by impaired functions of heart and blood vessel, one of those is coronary heart disease. This study aimed to identify the effect of purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L) extract on MDA (Malondialdehyde) levels of male white rat (Rattus norvegicus Wistar strain) model of atherosclerosis. This research was an experimental study using Post-Test Only Control Group Design method, used 5 groups (positive control group, negative control, treatment 1, treatment 2, and treatment 3), each group contained 5 rats plus 2 reserve rats. ANOVA one way test obtained a significance of 0.00 (p <0.05). The regression test results showed the coefficient of determination R² = 0.71, which means a decrease in serum MDA levels of experimental animals is influenced by the dose of purple sweet potato extract administration as much as 71% while the remaining 29% can be influenced by factors outside the study. It can be concluded that purple sweet potato extract can affect serum MDA levels of experimental animals.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major cause of hospital- and community-acquired infections worldwide. Therefore, this study was conducted to explore the antibacterial activity of the two medicinal plants Epaltes divaricata and Vetiveria zizanioides against strains of MRSA which were isolated from patients with skin and soft tissue infections. Hexane, ethanol, and water extracts of E. divaricata (whole plant) and V. zizanioides (roots) were prepared. Clinical isolates of MRSA strains (n = 20) were used for the study. Bacterial susceptibility was tested using a disc diffusion assay. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined by a broth microdilution method. Vancomycin was used as the positive control. Hexane, ethanol, and water extracts of E. divaricata showed inhibitory zones against MRSA. Except for water extract, both hexane and ethanol extracts of V. zizanioides showed inhibitory zones. MIC ranges of hexane, ethanol, and water extracts in E. divaricata were 0.012–0.32 mg/mL, 0.019–2.4 mg/mL, and 0.019–0.48 mg/mL, respectively. Respective MIC ranges of hexane and ethanol extracts of V. zizanioides were 0.003–0.032 mg/mL and 0.019–2.4 mg/mL. The hexane extract of V. zizanioides inhibited 55% of the selected MRSA strains at a relatively low MIC value of 0.012 mg/mL. The hexane extract of both plants demonstrated inhibition of 75% of MRSA strains at a MIC value of 0.064 mg/mL. Ethanol extract of V. zizanioides and E. divaricata, respectively, inhibited 70% and 45% of MRSA strains at the MIC of 0.096 mg/mL, whereas water extract of E. divaricata inhibited 80% of MRSA strains at the same MIC. Both E. divaricata and V. zizanioides were equally effective against MRSA at a MIC of 0.064 mg/mL. But V. zizanioides was more effective since the hexane extract inhibited more than 50% of MRSA strains at significantly a lower MIC value of 0.012 mg/mL. Fractionation, purification, and identification of active compounds will warrant further evaluation of the therapeutic potential of both plant extracts.

Sideritis scardica is a Lamiaceae plant that is endemic to the alpine zone of the Balkan Peninsula. The tea of S. scardica has been handed down as a “tea of longevity” in the Rhodope region of Bulgaria for an unknown amount of time. In this study, we prepared a hot water extract of S. scardica (SHWE) and examined its effects on both life span and stress response in living tissue using Caenorhabditis elegans and its transgenic mutants. The life span of wild-type N2 worms was prolonged by approximately 15% at the SHWE concentration of 5 µg/mL and approximately 22% at the SHWE concentration of 50 µg/mL, as compared with the control group. The effect of SHWE on the expression of heat shock protein 16.2 (HSP-16.2) under heat stress was investigated using TJ375 worms, a transgenic mutant of C. elegans. In the TJ375 worms pretreated with SHWE, the fluorescence intensity of green fluorescent protein fluorescence, which indicates the expression of HSP-16.2, was significantly increased. In the assay using TJ356 worms, the worms pretreated with SHWE did not show the translocation of DAF-16, a forkhead transcription factor class O homolog, from the cytoplasm to nucleus under heat stress. Additionally, under heat stress, the pretreatment of SHWE improved the survival rate of GR1307 worms, a knockout mutant of daf-16. These results indicate that SHWE enhances HSP-16.2 expression through a stress-response pathway (eg, HSF-1 pathway) other than the DAF-16 pathway, resulting in a prolonged life span of C. elegans under heat stress.

Background: Sweet potato leaf is assumed to be one of alternative herbs that can increase breast milk production. However, there was no studies found in the literature that examine the sweet potato leaves to increase the levels of prolactin and milk production.Objective: To examine the effect of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) leaf on the levels of prolactin and milk production in postpartum mothers.Methods: This was a Quasy experimental study with pretest-posttest design with control group, conducted on November 2016 to December 2016 in the Health Center (Puskesmas) of Boyolali I. Thirty respondents were selected using consecutive sampling, which were divided to be 15 respodents in intervention group and 15 respondents in control group. Enzyme-linked immunosobent assay (ELISA) was used to measure prolactin levels, while breast milk production was measured based on the volume of breast milk and baby’s weight. Data were analzed using Independent t-test and paired t-test.Results: Finding showed that there was a significant difference in prolactin levels between the intervention (270.43) and control group (156.28) after intervention  with p-value 0.000, and a significant difference in breast milk production in terms of breast milk volume (intervention group 136.33; and control group 119) with p-value 0.028; and baby’s weight (intervention group 3030.3; and control group 2787.33) with p-value 0.000.Conclusion: There was  a significant effect of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) leaf on the levels of prolactin and breast milk production. Thus, it could be suggested that sweet potato leaves should be considered to be one of alternative treatements for health care providers, especially for midwives to help breastfeeding mothers in increasing their breast milk production and prolactin levels. Further research is needed to examine all factors affecting breast milk production.

An experiment was carried out to determine the effect of fermented purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L) skin in diets on feed and anthocyanin consumption, carcass characteristics antioxidant profile and meat texture of Bali duck.. Five  treatment diets were used in a completely randomized design (CRD) consisted of control diet A (diet without containing purple sweet potato skin), diet B containing 10% purple sweet potato skin, diet C containing 10% fermented purple sweet potato skin, diet D containing 20% purple sweet potato skin, diet E containing 20% fermented purple sweet potato skin.Each treatment consisted of four replications and each replicate had five ducks. The variables observed were feed and anthocyanin consumption,slaughter weight, carcass weight, carcass percentage, carcass physical composition,  meat antioxidant profile (capacity antioxidant (CA), malondialdehide (MDA), and superoxide dismutase (SOD). Experiment results showed that diets with fermented or unfermented purple sweet potatoin diets treatments B, C, D, and E increased the anthocyanin  consumption,  slaughter weight, carcass weight, carcass percentage and meat percentage of duck carcass but decreased  their fat and skin. Fermented purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L) skin  in  C and E increased the antioxidant capacity(AC)  and superoxide dismutase (SOD) while  treatment B and  D were not significantly different (P>0.05) to the control group.  Malondialdehide (MDA) of the duck meat in treatment B,C, and D were significantly lower (P<0.05) compared to the control diet. Treatment E significantly  increased the perimesium and endomesium of meat texture , but its experiment was not significantly different to the control group. It was concluded that substitution of fermented purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L) skin in diets could improve of feed and anthocyanin, carcass characteristics, antioxidant profile, and meat texture of bali duck.
