In the Amazon region, the reality of the conventional laying poultry production chain consists of farms with structures that are inferior to those in other regions, with a massive presence of small poultry farmers, without a water, food and air conditioning automation system. The need for improvements in the poultry process that the small producer needs to produce can be linked to the relationship of implementing technology for monitoring equipment or systems. Therefore, the motivation of this study was the creation of a semi-automated system to optimize the thermal comfort of birds and reduce feed waste in the laying poultry production process for small producers in the interior of the Amazon region in order to reduce mortality and maximize the profit. The methodology designated for the construction of this research was based on the nature of applied research, with a view to the qualitative-quantitative approach, through technical procedures of a case study. After assembly of the semi-automated system for feeding, adding the total savings for feed consumption would be 1964.20 kg of feed, in reais it would be R$ 7,856.80. And for the ambiance system, we have savings on the energy bill of 60.94 reais a month and 731.31 reais a year. The semi-automated systems suggested for small poultry farmers in the Amazon region theoretically fulfill their objective, both for the improvement of waste and for the provision of animal welfare and increased profitability.

This study was conducted to assess the biosecurity practices in commercial poultry farms in the locality of ElFashir, North Darfur State Sudan. Thirty two farms biosecurity tests were used, biosecurity practices were evaluated in poultry farms using the checklist and organized questionnaires administered to commercial poultry farmers. Simple descriptive statistics were used (frequencies and percentages) to summarize and display the results. The results showed that 62.5% of the farms used the floor brooding system of the birds; 59.4% open barns; The domestic stock in access to the farm site 68.8%; Pets or wildlife birds have access to inside of barns or feed storage 71.9%; yearly water quality is not checked by a reputable laboratory 96.9%; employees have routine contact with other poultry species 84.4%; regular cleaning and disinfection of feeders and drinkers washing is done mainly by soap in addition to water. 43.8%; employees and their families with other people on poultry housing site 100%; poultry production, feed consumption, and mortality records are kept, but not reviewed daily 18.8%; there is untrimmed vegetation and debris within barn(s) 81.2%; vehicle flow designated way traffic onto premises and off premises 100% and perimeter fencing and gate present but not always locked or guarded or fence not completed 56.25%. The study concluded that there is a severe weakness in the application of biosecurity practices in its three branches isolation, cleaning disinfecting and traffic control. The adopted hygiene and traffic control measurement were all within the high and medium biosecurity risk limits whereas mismanagement resembled 60.4% the highest risk of biosecurity practices among the studies in commercial poultry farms of ElFashir Locality. Therefore, it is strongly recommended for local authorities to intervene with qualified teams of poultry professional and experts to train poultry farmers, managers and attendees on importance of implementing sound biosecurity practices.

This study analyzes the relation between Brazilian broiler and pig production and water productivity using recently developed reference guidelines on water footprinting for livestock production systems and supply chains. Different rainfed crop arrangements, in different scenarios and producer regions in Brazil, were assessed. Water productivity of broiler feed consumption ranged from 0.63 to 1.38 kg per m3 water input to rainfed summer maize (safra) and from 1.20 to 2.21 kg per m3 water input to winter maize (safrinha) while it ranged from 0.28 to 0.95 kg per m3 water input to rainfed soy. For pig feed consumption, rainfed maize ranged from 0.68 to 1.49 kg per m3 water input (safra) and from 1.30 to 2.38 kg per m3 water input (safrinha) while it ranged from 0.30 to 1.03 kg per m3 water input to rainfed soy. A potential amount of water saving of 0.0336 km3 year−1 and 0.0202 km3 year−1 could be attained for producing broiler and pig feed, respectively, depending on the crop rotation and producer region. The results showed that the evapotranspiration of animal feed production represents more than 99% of the total water consumption for broiler and pig production in the study area. The implementation of best crop practices resulted in higher water productivity values of chicken and pork meat and also improved the rainfall water-saving in comparison to conventional agriculture. Hence, the water productivity of the animal production chain in tropical regions demands a close relation to agriculture in order to attain a better understanding and improvement of rainfall water productivity for animal feed production.

The importance of poultry as a source of meat and eggs in developing countries is generally recognised, but present levels of production and consumption in Africa are disappointing. This article reviews the factors involved and concludes that there is a need for research designed to improve the traditional methods of small producers rather than seeking to impose modern Western methods on communities too backward to make effective use of them.

ABSTRACT-QMFS2019Poultry production provides source of protein and contributes an important income for Vietnamese farmers. Among the poultry in Vietnam, ducks account for 27.3% of head of poultry and even 55.7% in Mekong Delta region. Along with the development of rearing ducks, bacterial, viral and fungal diseases occurring in the two last decades induced bad effect for poultry producer. Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, Streptococcal or Pasteurella act as major pathogenic bacteria in duck. The aims of this study were to investigate the antibacterial activity of garlic Allium sativum against E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella Typhimurium and to evaluate the effect of garlic on growth performance of duck from 1-28 old-days. The results indicated that fresh garlic and dried garlic powder showed inhibitory effect against pathogenic tested strains from 2% and 4% w/v, respectively. The inhibition zones and the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of garlic extract ranged from 11.3-28.3 mm and 0.02-0.2 g/ml, respectively. After 28 days of diet with garlic supplemented, D3 (2% of fresh garlic in water) showed significantly different in weight gain (WG), feed conversion ratio (FCR), protein efficiency ratio (PER), average daily weight (ADW); whereas, D2 (2% of garlic powder in basal diet) only possessed a difference significant in feed consumption (FC) compared to the D1 (control without garlic supplementation). The obtained results demonstrated the potential of garlic application in poultry production.

The broiler production chain is productive, and chicken meat has achieved high export rates to several countries in the world. This study aimed to develop a mobile application that helps the producer to audit the issues of good production practices. The application was developed for Android and programmed in Java. For its development, questions were used, with different weights according to their importance for production. These questions were removed from the items that make up the manuals of good practices used in Brazil. A test was carried out with users to determine the possibility of using the application in the field. After answering all the questions, the user gets a score ranging from 5 to 1 (excellent to bad). It also indicates which questions they did agree with good practices. The test with users showed that the application was easy to understand and enabled users to make decisions that would improve broiler production.

Salmonella are widely found in the poultry industry, which subsequently may pose a risk to animal and human health. The aim of this review is to highlight strategies for the prevention and control of Salmonella at each stage in the poultry production chain by monitoring risks from the farm to the retailer. Among the primary approaches for control of Salmonella at the farm level includes the administration of synthetic and natural compounds to live chickens (vaccination and antibiotic), litter management as well as fortification of feed and acidification of drinking water. In the poultry processing plant, multiple hurdle technology and different chilling conditions to reduce Salmonella were discussed. In the retail level, an effective monitoring program to control Salmonella contamination by good manufacturing practices and hazard analysis and critical control points has been reviewed. Overall, we conclude that these approaches play a role in reducing the dissemination of Salmonella in the poultry industry. However, there is no published data related to logistic scheduling of poultry processing.

In this study, the conventional International Organization for Standardization (ISO) culture method was compared with the DuPont Qualicon BAX system, a high-throughput, rapid molecular assay that can be used to detect several bacterial species, including Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli in diverse sample types. Standard enrichment culture is a time-consuming process, taking up to 6 days to obtain a confirmed result. Rapid molecular assays have been developed that provide results within 24 h. Naturally contaminated samples from the poultry production chain were examined for the presence of Campylobacter spp. Samples from broiler chicken ceca (n = 100), fresh chicken carcass rinses (n = 60), and bootsocks (gauze sock walked through a broiler chicken house; n = 50) were enriched according to the ISO 10272 method in Bolton broth specifically designed to detect Campylobacter spp. in complex sample types. Samples were enriched without blood for use with the BAX system using the Campylobacter BAX kits for the detection of C. jejuni and C. coli. Samples also were directly plated onto modified charcoal cefperazone deoxycholate agar, and results were compared with those from the enriched samples for the ability to detect Campylobacter spp. Campylobacter spp. were isolated from 49% of samples with conventional enrichment cultures, from 48% with direct culture, from 68% with the BAX system and enrichment cultures, and from 62% with the BAX system used directly with samples. Overall, the BAX system detected more positive samples than did the conventional culture method and is an effective methodology for the rapid and reliable detection of Campylobacter spp. from diverse sample types.

O ambiente dentro dos galpões avícolas é um dos fatores primordiais para se conseguir bons índices zootécnicos e retornos financeiros. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o ambiente térmico no interior do galpão de aves poedeiras em diferentes estações do ano na tentativa de proporcionar uma melhor relação ao bem-estar das aves. O estudo foi realizado no galpão de aves poedeiras na UNESP - campus de Dracena/SP. Foram distribuídos e aferidos em doze pontos equidistantes as principais variáveis bioclimáticas, como temperatura de globo negro, temperatura do ar, temperatura de bulbo seco, temperatura de bulbo úmido, temperatura de superfície de telhado, umidade relativa do ar e velocidade do vento. As medições foram feitas nas transições entre as estações do inverno e primavera, primavera e verão e verão e outono, com o intuito de observar qual é a melhor estação do ano em que as aves apresentam um melhor conforto térmico dentro das instalações avícolas. As médias das variáveis bioclimáticas foram comparadas utilizando o teste estatístico Tukey (95%) através do software Statigrafics Centurion, e o software de superfície SURFER para o mapeamento do aviário. Os resultados indicaram que a transição entre inverno e primavera apresentou melhores valores com relação ao conforto térmico dentro do galpão, possibilitando um melhor bem-estar das aves e consequentemente melhor desempenho e retorno financeiro.PALAVRAS-CHAVES: Ambiência, Aquecimento Global, Ondas De Calor, Zootecnia De Precisão. MAPPING BIOCLIMATIC CONTOUR OF A POULTRY SHED IN A TROPICAL REGION IN THE CITY OF DRACENA/SPABSTRACT: The environment inside poultry houses is one of the main factors to achieve good zootechnical indexes and financial returns. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the thermal environment inside the shed of laying hens in different seasons of the year in an attempt to provide a better relation to the welfare of birds. The study was carried out in the poultry shed at UNESP campus in Dracena / SP. The main bioclimatic variables, such as black globe temperature, air temperature, dry bulb temperature, wet bulb temperature, roof surface temperature, relative air humidity and wind speed were distributed and measured at twelve equidistant points. The measurements were taken at the transition between the seasons of winter and spring, spring and summer and summer and fall, in order to obtain the best season of the year in which the birds can obtain better thermal comfort inside the poultry facilities. The averages of the bioclimatic variables were compared using the Tukey statistical test (95%) using the Statigrafics Centurion software, where the SURFER surface software was used to map the aviary. The results indicated that the transition between winter and spring presented better values with respect to thermal comfort inside the shed, allowing a better welfare of the birds and consequently better performance and financial return.KEYWORDS: Environment, Global Warming, Heatwaves, Precision Poultry Production.

Modern poultry breeding has been successful in achieving significant gains in production due to high fecundity, relatively short generation interval (in comparison with other species) and, last, the application of scientific processes in genetic evaluation. The objective of this paper was to document the development of an economic model relevant to the integrated turkey industry and to use the model to describe appropriate breeding objectives by calculating economic values for important production traits. The industry was modelled from the multiplier breeder down through to the processor. Each level in the production chain used a unit of production such as a live poult produced, a carcass delivered at the processing plant or a processed unit of meat to scale between different production divisions. Growth rate, feed consumption and breast meat yield all had similar relative economic value, while the reproductive traits (egg production, fertility and hatchability) had similar economic values to each other, but were smaller in comparison with the commercial production traits. The model was sensitive to assumed costs, such as feed price and, also for assumed returns in the form of breast meat value, and, as a consequence, care must be taken in the assumed pricing structure when calculating economic values for turkey breeding.Key words: Economic model, economic value, turkeys, breeding objectives
