Now in linguistics not enough attention is paid to functional researches. In this article systematization of functional linguistic researches in domestic linguistics is provided. In this article such major directions of a research as functional grammar, functional approach to interpretation of the text, functional syntax and functional stylistics are described. In this article the central concept of this sphere of a research is also described: the funktsinalno-semantic field (FSF), объективирующееся in categories and categorical situations. Besides, in work the following aspects are described: structure of the functional and semantic field on the example of the field of goodness united by a quality sign community including two nuclear centers - predicative and attributive; elements of the periphery of FSP; a possibility of communication between field elements; a possibility of various degree of expressiveness of components of the field depending on proximity to this or that kernel, and also a possibility of crossing of elements of different groups on the example of a komparativnost. The functional grammar represents the most important part of general functional model of language, but it is only one of elements of wider functional direction in linguistics.

This study aims at investigating the development of grammatical theory at the Institute of the Ukrainian Language for the last 30 years. The paper summarizes achievements in grammar theory from applying the functional, i.e., semantic and grammatical, approach developed by I.R. Vykhovanetsʹ to differentiating units into word and nonword classes and distinguishing morphological categories of major word classes. This facilitated the establishment of the theoretical basis of functional and categorical morphology. The author analyses studies in formal grammatical, semantic, functional, categorical, deri vational, and anthropocentric syntax that attest to the multidimensional growth of a syntactic theory and main aspects of the Ukrainian word formation on the basis of semantic and categorical syntax and a formant- and stem-based derivatology. Some of the latest multi-pronged processes in word formation reflect dynamics of word formation rules, the replenishment of word formation resources, and the development of the word-formation system of Standard Ukrainian. The solving of a complex set of theoretical issues in the modern Ukrainian word-formation introduced the methodological foundations for the recent normative description of the word formation system of Standard Ukrainian. The article addresses issues in studies on applied grammar determined by the process of glo balization and democratization of the Ukrainian society and the needs of Modern Ukrainian language practice to be met. Particular importance is attached to the grammatical prescriptive norms in the professional use, the actualization of case forms appearing in the passive vocabulary, and the dynamics of morphological and syntactic norms in various functional and stylistic dimensions of Standard Ukrainian. Keywords: functional grammar, functional morphology, functional syntax, categorical grammar, categorical syntax, categorical word formation, classification of parts of speech, morphological categories.

The article deals with the problems of the theory of functional grammar, which occupy a central place in modern linguistics. Its topicality is determined by the priority tasks of modern syntax, having the purpose to find out a methodological foundation of the study of fundamental semantic categories with a complex formal-content structure, what can be achieved basing on functional approach. The objective is to focus on different views to studying such categories within the framework of functional analysis, and to find the possibility to analyze the means belonging to different language levels in a single system basing on the commonality of their semantic functions. There exist various means of expressing a definite semantic meaning both at the level of a composite sentence, and at the level of a simple sentence. An algorithm for the analysis of complex functional-semantic categories is proposed.

Med ei djupare forståing for tydinga til språklege kategoriar vil ein også skape større potensial for overføring av kunnskap mellom ulike teksttypar og mellom ulike språk.Nøkkelord: funksjonell grammatikk, metaspråk, djupnelæringFunctional grammar as metalanguage in school– an opportunity for deep learning when working with language and textAbstractHow can functional grammar create a foundation for deeper learning in Norwegian studies? In Norwegian schools, there is a long tradition for distinguishing clearly between the language system and language in use, and a review of newer textbooks for teacher students shows that this approach is still valid. The officially recommended grammatical terminology for use in schools is based on a structuralist and partly generative grammar tradition in which texts are seen as uninteresting as objects of study. In the curriculum, on the other hand, texts are the most central objects of study, which means that there is little harmony between the theoretical approach to the grammatical system and the emphasis on grammar as metalanguage for work with texts in the curriculum. Functional grammar teaching is not the same as functional grammar theory, and in the article it is argued for a functional approach to the language system as a basis for the teaching of grammar in schools. In functional grammar, the language system and textual realisations of the system are two sides of the same coin, and it therefore provides a good basis for seeing connections between different subject areas. With a deeper understanding of the meaning of language categories, one will also create greater potential for transferring knowledge between different text types and between different languages. Keywords: functional grammar, metalanguage, deep learning

In this article the authors consider realization of futural meaning in the artistic text – in Victor Pelevin’s novel “Omon Ra”. The futurality is treated as a functional-semantic field according to functional grammar in version of A. V. Bondarko. The authors consider several expression forms of futurality which represent the different levels of language system: morphological, lexical, lexical-syntactic, syntactic, and contextually caused. These forms are descripted in terms of their frequency in the postmodern text.

The article features verbal mood as one of the morphological means of expressing the category of politeness. The main attention in the study of the category of courtesy and the means of its expression is focused on the functional grammar and the functional-semantic field as one of its basic concepts. When teaching a foreign language (grammar in general or communicative grammar in particular), the main role should be assigned to the functional principle of teaching. The principle is based on systems of different levels that express this or that meaning of the categories in question. The category of inclination, being an intentional category, expresses the relation of action to reality established by the speaker. Much attention is given to the characteristic features of the imperative and subjunctive moods that make up the nearest periphery of the functional-semantic field of courtesy both in Russian and Persian. The research concentrates on the semantics of the forms of imperative and subjunctive moods as invariants of the politeness category and explores various speech acts expressing different degrees of politeness in both languages.

The article discusses a functional approach to audio description (AD) and first proposes a classification of text types, followed by a model of source text (ST) analysis which encompasses three layers: the contextual, the macrotextual and the microtextual. The functional model helps identify the functional priorities in a given ST, which may then guide the audio describer’s decision-making process: the results of contextual and macrotextual analyses will assist the describer in the selection of the so-called macro strategy, while the microtextual analysis may help in making lower-level decisions called micro strategies. Although the model has been designed primarily for didactic purposes, its principles may also be useful for more experienced describers. Additionally, the model constitutes a theoretical conceptualisation of AD and attempts to better integrate AD within the field of translation studies.

This paper is about theme and rheme in the text of short story as approach using a Functional Grammar. The aims of this study are to identify theme and rheme, to classify the types and components of theme and to describe the correlation both theme and text development. The method used in this research is qualitative method. The data is taken from a short story entitled Sleeping Beauty by Charles Perrault. The data were analysed using some theories based on a Functional English Grammar. The findings of the research are there are two types of theme (Topical and Textual Theme) that could be found while Interpersonal theme couldn’t be found in the data. Moreover, the components of theme in the category of textual theme are conjunctive adjunct, conjunctive, structural, continuative and conjunction. Meanwhile for topical theme, the components of theme are as subject and marked topical theme (adverbial as theme). To know the correlation theme and text development, the researcher has identified and classified the text of short story. Therefore, in the Theme-Rheme structure of a text clause by clause, to gain an insight into its texture and understand how the writer clarify the nature of his underlying concerns.

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to explore, from the perspective of Systemic Functional Grammar, how passive clauses in a medical research article were translated into Spanish, specifically if they were kept in the passive voice, were changed into the active voice, or were turned into some other structure, and if voice change in the translated version affected the original thematic development. The medical paper chosen for this study was originally written in English and published in an Anglophone journal; it was then translated into Spanish and published in a Mexican journal. Both the original and the translated article were analyzed in terms of Theme and Rheme; all of the instances of passive and active voice were quantified and compared. The results show that in some cases the original thematic patterns were modified in the translation due to the use of the reflexive passive in Spanish, which results in the fronting of the verb in the sentences, thereby causing a change of Themes in the paragraphs with respect to the original structure. This study contributes to our understanding of the function of passive constructions in English and Spanish and its relationship with thematic progression.
