Gait analysis has evolved significantly during last years due to the great development of the Medical Internet of Things (MIoT) platforms that allow an easy integration of sensors (inertial, magnetic and pressure in our case) to the complex analytics required to compute, not only relevant parameters, but also meaningful indexes. In this paper, we extend a previous development based on a fully wireless pair of insoles by implementing an updated version with more reliable and user-friendly devices, smartphone app and web front-end and back-end. We also extend previous work focused on fall analysis (with the corresponding fall risk index or FRI) with the proposal of a new surgery recovery index (SRI) to account for the individual speed recovery speed that can be measured either at clinical facilities or at home in a telemedicine environment or while doing daily life activities. This new index can be personalized for different types of surgeries that affect gait such as hip, knee, etc. This paper presents the case of hip recovery and is built on top of the clinical standard SPPB test and allows obtaining quantitative parameters directly from the sensors.

The peculiar microclimate inside cultural hypogeal sites needs to be carefully investigated. This study presents a methodology that aimed at providing a user-friendly assessment of the frequently occurring hazards in such sites. A Risk Index was specifically defined as the percentage of time for which the hygrothermal values lie in ranges that are considered to be hazardous for conservation. An environmental monitoring campaign that was conducted over the past ten years inside the Mithraeum of the Baths of Caracalla (Rome) allowed for us to study the deterioration before and after a maintenance intervention. The general microclimate assessment and the specific conservation risk assessment were both carried out. The former made it possible to investigate the influence of the outdoor weather conditions on the indoor climate and estimate condensation and evaporation responsible for salts crystallisation/dissolution and bio-colonisation. The latter took hygrothermal conditions that were close to wall surfaces to analyse the data distribution on diagrams with critical curves of deliquescence salts, mould germination, and growth. The intervention mitigated the risk of efflorescence thanks to reduced evaporation, while promoting the risk of bioproliferation due to increased condensation. The Risk Index provided a quantitative measure of the individual risks and their synergism towards a more comprehensive understanding of the microclimate-induced risks.

Abstract The southern corn rootworm, Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi Barber, is a primary pest of peanut, Arachis hypogaea L., in Virginia and North Carolina and an occasional pest in South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Texas. Currently, no alternatives involving integrated pest management exist for this pest, and control is based solely on preventive application of soil insecticides. Recent reductions in federal price support for peanut grown in the U.S. have provided incentives for growers to look for ways to reduce production costs. A risk index was developed that integrates factors that influence rootworm abundance and peanut pod damage to estimate levels of risk in individual peanut fields, and thus allows for more prescriptive and economical rootworm management. This index was evaluated using 44 field case studies in Virginia and North Carolina commercial peanut fields over the period 1989 to 1996. In each field case, predicted risk was compared to actual percent pod damage. Results showed that in 29 of 44 cases, the index accurately predicted general levels of risk to pod damage, and insecticide treatment decisions based on the index would have been correct in 32 of 44 cases. This report contains the individual index components, the justification for each, the indexing process, example index scenarios, and results of the process used in field case study evaluation.

This article will explain what the term resilience means and how it is embedded in the practice of positive psychological interventions. Finally, it will emphasise how the application of positive psychological interventions can benefit the individual and the organisation. The practical tasks provided in the boxes throughout the article will help the reader identify what resilience means for them and understand how to further develop its transferability through evidence-based, user-friendly exercises.

<p>Evidence-based medicine has gained mainstream popularity, but it requires a delicate balance between clinical evidence, physician skills, patient preferences, and costs. Facing the individual patient, even a simple decision such as which antithrombotic agent should be prescribed becomes complex. There are several reasons for this conundrum, but one of the foremost is the limited external validity of pivotal randomized trials, with their extremely restrictive selection criteria. Post-marketing reporting of adverse events is a very useful and democratic means to appraise the risk-benefit profile, but to date such reports were not organized or available. The development of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) venue for such task, the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) has substantially improved data collection. However, analysis of this extensive relational database remains complex for most but few companies or agencies. AdverseEvents is a novel online platform enabling updated and user-friendly inquiry of FAERS. Given its ease of use, flexibility and comprehensiveness, it is likely going to improve decision making for healthcare authorities and practitioners, as well as patients. This is clearly testified by the precise and informative comparative analysis that can be performed with AdverseEvents on novel antithrombotic agents.</p>

&lt;p&gt;Since 2017, Open Data has been a part of the DWD data distribution strategy. Starting with a small selection of meteorological products, the number of available datasets has grown continuously over the last years. Since the start, users can access datasets anonymously via the website https://opendata.dwd.de to download file-based meteorological products. Free access and the variety of products has been welcomed by the general public as well as private met service providers. The more datasets are provided in a directory structure, however, the more tedious it is to find and select among all available data. Also, metadata and documentation were available, but on separate public websites. This turned out to be an issue, especially for new users of DWD's open data.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;To help users explore the available datasets as well as to quickly decide on their suitability for a certain use case, the Open Data team at DWD is developing a geoportal. It enables free-text search along with combined access to data, metadata, and description along with interactive previews via OGC WMS.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Cloud technology is a suitable way forward for hosting the geoportal along with the data in its operational state. Benefits are expected for the easy integration of rich APIs with the geoportal, and the flexible and fast deployment and scaling of optional or prototypical services such as WMS-based previews. Flexibility is also mandatory to respond to fluctuating user demands, depending on time of day and critical weather situations, which is supported by containerization. The growing overall volume of meteorological data at DWD may mandate to allow customers to bring their code to the data&amp;#160;&amp;#8211; for on-demand processing including slicing and interpolation &amp;#8211;&amp;#160; instead of transferring files to every customer. Shared cloud instances are the ideal interface for this purpose.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The contribution will outline a protoype version of the new geoportal and discuss further steps for launching it to the public.&lt;/p&gt;

Several pathologies can alter the way people walk, i.e., their gait. Gait analysis can be used to detect such alterations and, therefore, help diagnose certain pathologies or assess people’s health and recovery. Simple vision-based systems have a considerable potential in this area, as they allow the capture of gait in unconstrained environments, such as at home or in a clinic, while the required computations can be done remotely. State-of-the-art vision-based systems for gait analysis use deep learning strategies, thus requiring a large amount of data for training. However, to the best of our knowledge, the largest publicly available pathological gait dataset contains only 10 subjects, simulating five types of gait. This paper presents a new dataset, GAIT-IT, captured from 21 subjects simulating five types of gait, at two severity levels. The dataset is recorded in a professional studio, making the sequences free of background camouflage, variations in illumination and other visual artifacts. The dataset is used to train a novel automatic gait analysis system. Compared to the state-of-the-art, the proposed system achieves a drastic reduction in the number of trainable parameters, memory requirements and execution times, while the classification accuracy is on par with the state-of-the-art. Recognizing the importance of remote healthcare, the proposed automatic gait analysis system is integrated with a prototype web application. This prototype is presently hosted in a private network, and after further tests and development it will allow people to upload a video of them walking and execute a web service that classifies their gait. The web application has a user-friendly interface usable by healthcare professionals or by laypersons. The application also makes an association between the identified type of gait and potential gait pathologies that exhibit the identified characteristics.

Abstract In the European Union, more than 100,000 man-made chemical substances are awaiting an environmental risk assessment (ERA). Simultaneously, ERA of chemicals has now entered a new era. Indeed, recent recommendations from regulatory bodies underline a crucial need for the use of mechanistic effect models, allowing assessments that are not only ecologically relevant, but also more integrative, consistent and efficient. At the individual level, toxicokinetic-toxicodynamic (TKTD) models are particularly encouraged for the regulatory assessment of pesticide-related risks on aquatic organisms. In this paper, we first propose a brief review of classical dose-response models to put into light the on-line MOSAIC tool offering all necessary services in a turnkey web platform whatever the type of data to analyze. Then, we focus on the necessity to account for the time-dimension of the exposure by illustrating how MOSAIC can support a robust calculation of bioaccumulation factors. At last, we show how MOSAIC can be of valuable help to fully complete the EFSA workflow regarding the use of TKTD models, especially with GUTS models, providing a user-friendly interface for calibrating, validating and predicting survival over time under any time-variable exposure scenario of interest. Our conclusion proposes a few lines of thought for an even easier use of modelling in ERA.

AbstractBackgroundExploration and processing of FASTQ files are the first steps in state-of-the-art data analysis workflows of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) platforms. The large amount of data generated by these technologies has put a challenge in terms of rapid analysis and visualization of sequencing information. Recent integration of the R data analysis platform with web visual frameworks has stimulated the development of user-friendly, powerful, and dynamic NGS data analysis applications.ResultsThis paper presents FastqCleaner, a Bioconductor visual application for both quality-control (QC) and pre-processing of FASTQ files. The interface shows diagnostic information for the input and output data and allows to select a series of filtering and trimming operations in an interactive framework. FastqCleaner combines the technology of Bioconductor for NGS data analysis with the data visualization advantages of a web environment.ConclusionsFastqCleaner is an user-friendly, offline-capable tool that enables access to advanced Bioconductor infrastructure. The novel concept of a Bioconductor interactive application that can be used without the need for programming skills, makes FastqCleaner a valuable resource for NGS data analysis.

 The development of educational kit must be compiled on how to prepare undergraduate students in the engineering field in following the new trends globally and becoming an alternative to the technical education system based on practical approach. The primary motivation for this research is to design and implement the visible light communications (VLC) educational toolkit, especially in the analog front-end part. It consisted of six kits (transimpedance amplifier, pre-amplifier, DC-offset remover, analog filter, and AGC) in which each kit has one practicum task. There are six tasks and one task for the project by integrating these kits. The undergraduate students can use this educational kit to investigate the physical layer in a VLC system. It provides a low-complexity educational kit, so this is becoming an alternative as supplement course offered in this field. The purpose of this paper is to study the speciation and contents of two types of heavy metals (Cd and Hg) in the sediments in Power Bridge (D1) and Nanshui Bridge (N2) in the middle part of the Ancient Canal in Zhenjiang. The relationship between the speciation of these heavy metals and their environmental factors were described. Morerover, the ecological hazard and trace to the source of these two types of heavy metals was also determined preliminarily. The results showed that (1) the main heavy metal contamination in the sediments of Power Bridge and Nanshui Bridge is Cd, and the average value is 20 mg/Kg, 17 mg/Kg, respectively, which were higher than environmental background value;(2) The peak value of Hg and Cd were near equilibrium in the 0.1-0.2m depth of Sediments; (3) Calculate the individual potential ecological risk index in the sediments of heavy metal element of two sample points both quantity of contents are Cd>Hg. And visible ecological threat of heavy metals were from Cd. After removing the Cd value, the RI value showed that ecological harm index basically below mild ecological harm degree.
