This study investigates the needs of tourism stakeholders and students of the English Education Department to develop the English for Tourism (EFT) course material. The participants were ten hotel managers, five travel agents, and 86 second-semester students of the English Education Department. This descriptive quantitative study employed a questionnaire as the primary tool to gather the data adapted from Puspitasari (2018) and Ratmanida et al. (2020). The data then were analyzed using the formula of percentage and mean range table to determine the level of needs from the responses. The results indicated that the stakeholders and students agreed that speaking (100%) and writing (90%) were the most needed English skills to acquire. Then, in terms of the EFT topics, the participants responded to the topics that were relevant with their needs or fields. However, specifically, they seemed to have the same opinions and needs for the hotelier topics and some relevant expressions. In short, the results are expected to be beneficial for the EFT course designers to design suitable, directed, and valuable materials for students to help them be skillful and knowledgeable in the tourism industry.

This explanatory quantitative study aimed to identify the correlation between the students’ Micro Teaching and Field Pre-Service Teaching courses. The population of the study was the students of English Education Department of the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Ar-Raniry, Banda Aceh, Aceh, Indonesia, who had taken micro-teaching class and had conducted field pre-service teaching, a total of 141 students. Then, 43 students were selected as the sample of this study. Data came from these students’ scores in Micro Teaching class and in Field Pre-Service Teaching. The data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment with the SPSS 16.0. The findings indicated that there was no significant correlation between micro-teaching and field pre-service teaching (p-value = .196; p>.05). In addition, the strength level of the Pearson correlation coefficient between the two variables was negative and weak (r = -0.201). It can be interpreted that the students’ teaching ability was not dependent upon their micro-teaching scores.

Teaching EFL reading to the students at colleges or universities requires an appropriate technique that enables students to enhance their achievement as well as to develop their sense of independent learning. This is also to respond to the current trend of that the focus of ELT today is creating learners who are not only competent but also dependent or autonomous in learning. This study is aimed at exploring the needs of both lecturers and students on EFL reading class. The method used was descriptive-qualitative. It was conducted at the English Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Pancasakti University Tegal, from April to June 2018. The participants of this study were 64 students of the fourth semester in the department attending EFL reading class and 4 EFL lecturers. The data were collected using triangulation. The instruments used were a questionnaire, classroom observation, and interview. The results showed that the instruction and assessment were still teacher-centered, the learning materials and the method did not meet the students needs, the selection of the materials was not in line with the students level of competence, the students were given fewer opportunities to explore and share their ideas with others, etc. The result also showed that both students and lecturers agreed that learning EFL reading through self-assessment could be an alternative learning model or technique to cope with the situations. Keywords: needs analysis; EFL reading; learner autonomy; self-assessment.

Students at universities are still frequently found to have low independency in learning. Besides, lecturers also still have tendency to treat students as if they were young learners, or in other words, the lecturers still use pedagogically oriented teaching methods (POTM); although they claimed themselves to have applied methods of teaching orienting to the characteristics of adult learners or andragogically oriented teaching methods (AOTM). This also happens to the students at English Education Department of Muria Kudus University (EED MKU), and affects their achievement of language leaning, in particular theirs of teaching practice. Some schools in which the students conduct teaching internship consider that the students’ achievement of teaching is still less satisfactory, and they tend to be less creative and less independent in preparing the teaching, particularly related to the use of instructional skills of teachnig, such the use of classroom language and the use of things neeeded in teaching as media of teaching. This is a quantitative study involving 87 students joining Speaking for Instructional Purposes (SIP) classes at EED MKU. The instruments used are pre and post tests of teaching practice in SIP classes. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of implementing AOTM and POTM to improve the female and the male students’ achievement of teaching practice. The results reveal that AOTM is more effectively implemented to improve the male students than the female ones.

This research investigates how process of speaking instruction takes place at IAIN SMH Banten. There are three main issues in the research problems: the process of teaching speaking, obstacles found in the teaching and learning process, and what efforts do they make to solve the obstacles in speaking. The process of teaching speaking discusses materials, preparation, procedures or steps in teaching speaking while obstacles and solutions discuss the speaking barriers that the students faced in speaking class and how they minimize the barriers. By applying descriptive qualitative research design to students of fourth semester in academic year 2014/2015, the result shows that the focus of speaking instruction at the fourth semester of English education department of IAIN SMH Banten seemed to let the students speak, without any language skills discussion as the feedback. At the same time, during the process of speaking instruction there are some problems faced by students. The first is  problem of limited English Competence dealt with students poor of vocabulary and the second is problems of psychological factors.

Visualisation has been used for decades as a strategy to help readers construct meaning from reading passages. Teachers across the globe have introduced visualisation mostly to primary students with native language background. They used the strategy to understand their own language. Little is known how this strategy works for university students who learn foreign language. Visualisation can be done internally (by creating mental imagery) and externally (by drawing visual representation). The product of visualising texts by using both models can be further investigated to find out if the meaning represented is appropriate to the meaning written in the text. This study therefore aims at exploring meaning by analysing the visual representations drawn by 26 English Education Department students of Syiah Kuala University after they read a narrative text. The exploration was conducted by looking at the image-word relations in the drawings. To do so, we consulted Chan and Unsworth (2011), Chan (2010) and Unsworth and Chan (2009) on the image-language interaction in multimodal text. The results of the analysis have found that the equivalence, additive and interdependent relations are mostly involved in their visual representations; and these relations really help in representing meanings. Meanwhile, the other three relations which are word-specific, picture specific and parallel are rarely used by the students. In addition, most students created the representations in a form of a design which is relevant to represent a narrative text. Further discussion of the relation between image-word relations, types of design and students’ comprehension is also presented in this paper.

We propose that assortative matching, a well-established paradigm in other industry sectors and academic disciplines, can underpin the concept of destination matching. This provides a new foundation to integrate research concepts and terminology in destination marketing and destination choice. We argue that the commercial tourism industry already applies destination matching approaches, with three historical phases. Initially, matching of tourists and destinations relied on the tacit expertise of specialist agents. This still applies in specialist subsectors. For generalist travel and accommodation, human agents were partially replaced by online travel agents, OTAs, which are customised algorithms operating only in the travel sector. These still exist, but their share price trends suggest decreasing significance. Currently, automated assortative algorithms use multiple sources of digital data to push appealing offers to potential purchasers, across all retail sectors. Digital marketing strategies for tourism products, enterprises, and destinations are now just one category of generalised product–purchaser matching, using entirely automated algorithms. Researchers do not have access to proprietary algorithms, but we can identify which components they incorporate by analysing their underlying patents. We propose that theories of destination marketing and choice need to reflect these recent and rapid real-world changes via deliberate analysis of destination matching.

Hotel bookings are increasingly made online, and many travellers rely on eWOM in the form of peer hotel reviews. These reviews potentially contain information of great relevance to the tourism industry and offer a unique and ever-expanding corpus of unsolicited data. If this data is investigated systematically, it may provide insights that would enable hotel managers to be proactive in their marketing. The present study focuses on the under-researched area of the potential impact of nationality on the reviews. Using a corpus of authentic American and German hotel reviews and the qualitative, phenomenologically-inspired method of Systematic Text Condensation, this study investigates the impact of national culture on review comments in order to establish whether nationality makes a difference for the themes and attitudes expressed. The data indicate that Americans are more likely to focus on old-world charm, romance, physical comfort, personal service/relations and problem-solving than Germans are. The overall results of this qualitative study allow us to conclude that there are indeed differences between the German and the American reviews to a degree that is worth pursuing in future mixed-methods research and that may have practice implications for hotel managers.
