In this article, the problem of declining reader interest among high school students is considered. A way of solving this problem is proposed: increasing high school students' interest in reading by using modern technologies. The research methods used in this paper include theoretical (analysis of scientific, non-fiction and fiction literature, followed by analysis and synthesis of obtained data), as well as empirical (a survey in order to determine the reading activity of students, comparison and analysis of obtained data, systematization and statistical processing of research materials) methods. The author has examined several modern information and communication resources, of which those most suitable for the purpose of this study have been selected: an online survey, a poster, a book trailer and an Internet forum. The results of this study demonstrated a positive dynamic in 10th grade students' reader interest, thus confirming the hypothesis.

The following paper explores the establishment of credibility by two forms of alternative media: (1) a traditional alternative media site, and (2) an alternative media program embedded within a mainstream channel. We engaged in a qualitative content analysis of the program Declassified produced by Epoch Times and circulated via YouTube, and the program Hannity broadcast by Fox News. In particular, we focused on the claims made by the hosts, and the sources that they provided in their reports. We found that the host of the former worked to overcome an alternative journalism credibility gap by engaging in mainstream news mimicry, while the host of the latter largely relied on the credibility that came from being embedded in a mainstream channel. Overall, these findings hold important implications for the construction of credibility through alternative media channels that are increasingly influencing mainstream political discourse.

Critical discourse analysis (CDA) is a cross-disciplinary methodological and theoretical approach. At its core CDA explores the intersections between discourse, critique, power, and ideology which hold particular values for those teaching in developing contexts. CDA has emerged as a valuable methodological approach in cultural and media studies and has increased in prominence since the 2010s in education research where it is drawn on to explore educational policy, literacy education, and identity. This research has intersected with the field of information systems which has explored the dominant discourses and discursive practice of how information and communication technologies (ICTs) are viewed in policy and the contradictions between rhetoric and reality. It has also been drawn on in research in developing contexts to critique the role of ICTs in education. A brief historical background to CDA and overview of the key components of the approach will be provided. How CDA has been drawn on in educational studies will be examined and research on CDA will be highlighted to explore discursive practices of students and the influence of students’ digital identities on their engagement with and experience of online learning. By focusing on four key constructs of CDA—namely meaning, context, identity, and power—the potential of CDA to critically investigate how students’ are constructing their technological identity in an increasingly digital world will be demonstrated, particularly as examples of research emanating from developing contexts will be drawn.

Abstract Background The US electronic cigarette (ECIG) market and use behavior continues to rise, warranting investigation of ECIG advertisement (ad) content within media channels frequented by youth including internet and television (TV). In order to inform potential policy regulations, this content analysis sought to assess the prevalence of youth-appealing content and spend characteristics among ECIG video ads. Methods Between 2015 and 2016, 46 ECIG video ads were identified using an ad-tracking firm and were coded using the Content Appealing to Youth (CAY) index. Bivariate analyses and analysis of variance were used to compare CAY indices between online and TV ads and by ECIG brands. Ad-specific spend and source information, including website/TV program targeted were examined descriptively. Results Common youth-appealing features included use of animation (56.5%) and content related to positive sensations (52.2%), promoting mood (34.8%), individuality/freedom (23.9%) and addiction (19.6%). Features not associated with youth appeal also were prevalent. Few differences were observed by media source or ECIG brand. TV ads accounted for the largest spend, and Vuse was the top spending brand. Websites/TV programs were diverse. Conclusions Findings support regulatory efforts to restrict the use of youth-appealing content within ECIG ads as well as the reduction of media sources available for ECIG marketing.

The paper seeks to develop new avenues for a study of book journalism. Specifically, it deals with a problem of institutionalization of book journalism as a self-sufficient thematic direction in contemporary cultural journalism. More specifically, the article aims to explore a publicism of Kostiantyn Rodyk, the well-known Ukrainian cultural journalist formerly a book journalist. He is the former editor-in-chief of one of the most professional specialized magazine Knyzhnyk-Review (2000―2007s), the television and radio presenter, the founder and top manager of the annual National book rating Knyzhka Roku, columnist of the newspapers Den’ and Ukraina Moloda, author of the book series Ukrainian Best. Knyzhka Roku, some non-fiction books Actualna Literatura and Sizif XX. Knyzhka vs. polityka. The latter feature numerous essays dealing with actual publishing and literary process in Ukraine. We show that combined in one book; it created continuous nonfiction (publicist) meta-narrative or nonfiction (publicist) meta-text. The latter makes it possible to distinguish the most specific features of quality book journalism. The paper attempts to define concepts of the «book publicism» and «book journalism», highlight differences between book journalism and literary-critical journalism. The author proposes to consider book publicism as a generalized phenomenon uniting both texts and the process of their creation. On the contrary, we argue that book journalism is one of the possible mediatized practices. It is a discourse that implies both the creation and the public reflection on the products of journalistic activity. In the course of the textual analysis of publicism works of Kostiantyn Rodyk, we have identified essential features of his book, non-fiction criticism. Those were: a broad subject (so-called «book culture»); socio-communicative approach to comprehension of literary and publishing artifacts; multi-functionality (informing about new books and literary works by the Ukrainian and foreign authors as well as publishing houses; criticism; creating culture; worldview, aesthetic and artistic tastes shaping and so on); hypertextuality and cross-mediality; preference given to genres such as essay and review; masterful use of expressive stylistics and linguistic means of popularization of knowledge. We conclude that such specific features can be considered as criteria for quality book journalism, a benchmark for mastering creative writing about the «world of books». Key words: publicism, book journalism, literary criticism, Kostiantyn Rodyk, literary and publishing process, essay.
