This article is devoted to the main problems of assessing the competitiveness of enterprises. The concept of competitive advantage is central in strategic management studies. Firm-level competitiveness is a relative concept based on the comparison; the comparison could be between the main factors or variables to measure the level of development between them. The notion of competitiveness lies at the heart of business strategy development, where it depends on several factors which are interrelated and cannot be looked at into isolation. Some of these indicators can be considered at different levels of aggregation: firm, industry, regional, local, national or sectoral where it seems that the competitiveness notion should be rather defined as a set of characteristics of one object with respect to comparable objects “benchmarks” in the market. Based on the definition of the main characteristics of the competitiveness of the enterprise, the authors proposed an original definition of this term. A systemic literature review approach named as longitudinal literature review has been adopted in this article to target the most crucial indicator for measuring competitiveness. The data has been collected from articles with the highest index journal articles in Scopus and Web of Science database. All the journal articles that have been targeted ranked as Q1 quartiles which means it is in the top 25 % of highest impact factor and highest impact index. For eliminating the most effective competitiveness indicators, the authors have used the Vos-viewer software to analyze more than 77972 publications Based on the content analysis, the authors proposed the system of indicators of enterprise competitiveness, consisting of four indicators (net profit growth, staff turnover, profit margin, return on investment), found in more than 50% of scientific articles. The authors propose methodological bases for dynamic assessment of the competitiveness of the enterprise, which are to compare changes in the competitiveness of the object of study with changes in industry averages. Using of this technique will measure the impact of managerial decisions on the competitiveness of the enterprise.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of the different circular business models (CBMs) in the manufacturing and service sector and apply this in the context of the food industry (FI), through a systematic literature review of related published journals and articles. The research study is designed to illustrate the impact of CBMs in the manufacturing and service sectors through a combination of real-life examples and direct references to existing literature.Design/methodology/approachThe underlying research study follows a systematic literature review approach where the relevant CBMs are explored in the context of the manufacturing and service sector (FI.) The journals most cited in the context of CBMs and their implication in the manufacturing and service sector were chosen for this study. There was no fixed timeframe applied to complete the research. A total of 54 articles were selected which referenced: discussion in the context of the concept of CBMs; different types of CBM; definition of the manufacturing sector; definition of the service sector (FI); application of different CBMs in these two sectors; and included a comparison of the application of CBMs. In total, 40 of the 54 articles were shortlisted for best relevance and used in the research study.FindingsThe underlying research study was limited to 40 articles and the data contained within them. The article search was limited to the keywords of the CBM; the implication of CBM; the CBM in manufacturing (textiles); circular business in service (FI); and comparison and application of the CBM.Practical implicationsThe final analysis demonstrates that circular business promotes sustainability by allowing companies to generate maximum return from given resources and reach zero waste targets. Greater customer satisfaction is also achieved through service innovation that cuts down negative impact on the environment. These findings are relevant and applicable to the FI.Originality/valueA review of existing literature showed that whilst there is significant research on the implications of the CBM in general, there has been little focus on the use of different CBMs specifically in the manufacturing and service industry (FI). This research study is designed to tease out the specific benefits of CBMs in this context, highlighting the contribution they can make to efficiency in both the manufacturing and service sectors (FI) through useful comparison.

It becomes increasingly obvious that the current social stage comes with unique challenges, so the definition of success as gaining advantages only to one party to the detriment of the other must be overcome. In the new era, highly interconnected and transparent, we must find solutions to raise ourselves together, or together we will collapse. Our goal is to build a global community, energized by the vast informational networks (which have canceled all distances), based on responsibility, creativity, common benefits and values. Using new approaches and solving problems not solitary but synergistically, effectively, principally, the new strong currency in the global business strategy will become the trust. This cannot be achieved either by fear or legal over-regulation, but only by higher moral values, assumed and followed as the only long-term sustainable solution.

This study explores the ocean grabbing phenomenon that arises as a result of the reclamation project undertaken to facilitate the expansion of urban capital. The case of reclamation projects in Indonesia and Malaysia is taken to be compared with the consideration of the method of spending and facilitation on urban capital investment through the reclamation project. The need for new land which has become the culprit of the reclamation project will be explored about the impact it has had on the socio-ecological crisis that coastal communities must suffer. This study is a literature review carried out by tracing research reports, journal articles, and online media coverage related to the problem being examined. This study was carried out by borrowing the definition of ocean grabbing made by Bennett, Govan, and Satterfield and the criteria they made to show socio-ecological crises arising in coastal communities due to the reclamation project. The results of the study show that reclamation projects in Indonesia and Malaysia pose serious ocean grabbing problems. First, reclamation projects in Indonesia and Malaysia have poor governance. Minimal public participation and inadequate planning are a way for the facilitation of urban capital expansion in the reclamation project. Second, the reclamation project has worsened the living conditions of coastal communities due to loss of catchment area, decreased income, and deprived the community of its living space. Third, the reclamation project has caused damage to the ecosystem which has broken the balance of the environment in marine waters.AbstrakKajian ini mendalami fenomena ocean grabbing yang muncul akibat proyek reklamasi yang dilakukan untuk memfasilitasi ekspansi modal. Kasus proyek reklamasi di Indonesia dan Malaysia diambil untuk diperbandingkan dengan melihat metode pengurugan dan upaya memfasilitasi investasi perkotaan dalam proyek reklamasi. Kebutuhan lahan baru yang menjadi biang keladi dari proyek reklamasi akan didalami mengenai dampak yang ditimbulkannya pada krisis sosio-ekologis yang harus diderita masyarakat pesisir. Studi ini adalah kajian pustaka yang dilakukan dengan menelusuri laporan penelitian, artikel jurnal, dan pemberitaan media daring yang terkait dengan persoalan yang dikaji. Kajian ini dilakukan dengan meminjam pendefinisian ocean grabbing yang dibuat oleh Bennett, Govan, dan Satterfield serta kriteria yang mereka buat untuk mengidentifikasi krisis sosio-ekologis yang muncul di masyarakat pesisir akibat proyek reklamasi. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa proyek reklamasi di Indonesia dan Malaysia menimbulkan masalah ocean grabbing secara serius. Pertama, proyek reklamasi di Indonesia dan Malaysia memiliki tata kelola yang buruk. Partisipasi publik yang minim dan perencanaan tidak memadai menjadi jalan bagi fasilitasi ekspansi modal dalam proyek reklamasi. Kedua, proyek reklamasi telah memperburuk keadaan kehidupan masyarakat pesisir akibat hilangnya daerah tangkapan, penurunan pendapatan dan mencerabut komunitas dari ruang hidupnya. Ketiga, proyek reklamasi menyebabkan kerusakan ekosistem yang telah merusak keseimbangan lingkungan di perairan laut.

Competitiveness at the firm level is a subject of interest not only to managers and policy makers but also academics. An effective functioning under the conditions of new economy requires from the enterprises to develop their core capabilities and talents along with the ability to quickly identify and seize the opportunities generated by market environment. The implementation of such an approach allows the creation and sustain of economic surpluses in the long-run. The paper aims to examine the profitability of enterprises in Poland which is regarded in the context of absorption of EU funds in years 2007–2013. Taking into account that Poland became one of the largest beneficiaries, it is worth analyzing the impact of EU funding on the economic performance of Polish enterprises. The paper offers a critical reflection on the relationship between the absorption of EU funds and Polish enterprises competitiveness on the basis of  the content analysis literature and statistical data derived from the European Commission, the Central Statistical Office and the Ministry of Regional Development. It is assumed simultaneously that the competitiveness of enterprises is expressed in the term of profitability rates. In spite of limitations which relate to the adopted definition of competitiveness and the short period of the conducted analysis concerning the key relationship, the paper contributes to the debate on the significance of EU Funds in the process of building modern and innovative economy.

Individual differences are considered one of the main factors in language learning. This article begins by presenting the definition of individual differences and identifying the possible individual differences that may affect the L2 learning process are. Based on the literature review, shows that there are eight (8) major individual differences to be found as salient features in the L2 learning process. A brief overview of these eight (8) individual differences is provided, supported by the literature review of 20 journal articles. This journal article used grounded theory design as a method in identifying the relationship of the following individual differences in the L2 learning process. According to the results, although there is a growth in the study of individual differences that affects the L2 learning process, there is still much work to be done and much more investigation is required.

ABSTRACT Introduction Hypocalcemia and permanent hypoparathyroidism are important outcome measures after total thyroidectomy. The aim of this article is to identify and highlight the wide variation in the adequacy/definition of these complications as reported in the surgical literature. Methods Nineteen journal articles (2008) on complications of thyroidectomy and 17 journal articles (2002) on ‘prediction’ of postthyroidectomy hypocalcemia derived from a PubMed search were reviewed. Results Only 21% of studies of describing outcome and complications of thyroidectomy defined hypocalcemia, temporary/permanent hypoparathyroidism. 47% of studies on the early prediction of hypocalcemia failed to quote their normal range of serum calcium. When stated, the biochemical definition of hypocalcemia varied from 1.8 to 2.12 mmol/l. There is no consistent definition of post-thyroidectomy hypoparathyroidism. Conclusion There is no consensus apparent on literature review as to what constitutes post-thyroidectomy hypocalcemia and hypoparathyroidism. The need to benchmark and define appropriate outcome measures of thyroid surgery demands that this deficit is addressed.

Abstract. The COVID-19 pandemic constitutes an unprecedented threat for individuals and societies, revealing stark inequalities in preparedness, exposure, and consequences. The present systematic literature review complements extant knowledge on disasters and pandemic diseases with programmatic research on the COVID-19 pandemic. Building upon an integrative definition of threat, we merge intra-personal threat regulation with group dynamics and inter-group relations. Via streamlined methods of knowledge synthesis, we first map out a broad taxonomy of threats, as appraised by the majority population and ethno-racial and immigrant minorities. Second, we delve into research linking threat appraisals with either conflict or prosociality within and across group boundaries. To conclude, we propose some guidelines for researchers to involve ethno-racial and immigrant minorities actively and for societies to cope cohesively with the impact of COVID-19.

The importance of innovation is widely considered to be of peak importance for today´s enterprises. However, the understanding of one key element leading towards innovation seems to be neglected in scientific research: The innovative work behavior of individuals. Since Scott and Bruce investigated the determinants and introduced a path model of individual innovative work behavior twenty years ago (Scott and Bruce, 1994) much time has passed. New and upcoming trends in management, society and culture therefor could not be considered but influence the concept. This conceptual literature review therefor identifies, evaluates, aggregates and classifies the developments and trends from 2020 and 2021 regarding innovative work behavior. This study analyzed 41 journal articles, which further cited 3,609 publications as references, in EBSCO and Elsevier. The focus of the literature review was studies published in 2020 and 2021 and analyses that covered the topic of individual innovative behavior. The defined research objectives were framed by setting conceptual boundaries. Data was collected by using inclusion/exclusion criteria to then validate and manually review the research results. The results of this review suggest that firstly there is a change visible of the definition of the term itself, which has also influenced the scales being used to be reviewed or shifting. In addition the review shows how changes in working and managing enterprises effect innovative work behavior. They can be grouped into the three areas: role and impact of culture, societal trends and new management trends. Thus the effects of mindfulness, transformational leadership, usage of social media, or corporate social responsibility on innovative work behavior are better understood. This conceptual literature research connects and aggregates the various tendencies and supports new measurement models introduced which might help to identify possible causes of these discrepancies and provide direction for further research. Thereby this conceptual literature review thus sheds light on what otherwise seems to be a familiar concept.

This study examines the impact of tax policy uncertainty (TPU) on analysts' forecasts and managers' interim estimates of effective tax rates (ETRs). We adopt a broad definition of TPU that encompasses both the legislative and regulatory processes and perform tests to validate a news-based measure of TPU consistent with our definition. We document that 1) analysts' implied ETR forecasts are less accurate and more disperse during periods of high TPU, 2) managers' ETR estimates are less accurate during periods of high TPU, and 3) the presence of relatively inaccurate management ETR estimates strengthens the effects of TPU on analysts' ETR forecasts. We further find that firm-level tax-related complexity exacerbates the effects of TPU on analysts' and managers' ETR predictions. Overall, our results are consistent with uncertainty surrounding tax policy impairing analysts' and managers' ability to assess and predict future tax-related fundamentals, thus imposing real costs on managers and market participants.
