A comparative account of haemato-biochemical profiles of an indigenus (IND) and five chicken breeds: viz. Cobb 500 (COB), cockerel (COC), Fayoumi (FAY), Rhode Island Red (RIR), and Sonali (SON, derived from RIR cock × FAY hen), has been presented. The haematological profile included total counts (TC) of RBC, WBC, platelets, haemoglobin (Hb%) and ESR and differential counts (DC) of WBC included neutrophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes, monocytes and basophils. All the haematological parameters except WBC, ESR and basophils showed significant difference among the breeds (P < 0.01). Vital biochemical parameters from blood sera such as calcium, cholesterol, creatinine, glucose and urea also showed significant difference among the chicken breeds (P < 0.05). The haematobiochemical parameters, however, were not significantly correlated (P > 0.05) with each other among the chicken breeds. Except for cholesterol vs. urea in IND, none of the correlations tested for haemato-biochemical profiles of the experimental chickens was found significant. Relevance of this study in relation to health, clinico-pathology and improved breeding strategies of the poultry species in the country has been discussed.Bangladesh J. Zool. 41(2): 135-144, 2013

The aim of the present investigation was to examine the haematological profile and oxidative stress before and after disbudding in calves. The study was carried out at Livestock Farm Complex, College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, ANDUAT, Kumarganj, Ayodhya and nearby villages. Twenty four cattle calves were utilized to study haematological parameters that are Haemoglobin (Hb (gm/dl), Neutrophil (%), Basophil (%), PCV (%), Lymphocyte (%), Monocyte (%), TLC (103/ µl), Eosinophil (%), N/L ratio) and oxidative stress before and after disbudding in to four groups viz. control (T0), lignocaine (TL), tremadol (TT) and lignocaine+tremadol (TL-T). After medication calves were disbudded by hot iron method. The blood samples were collected for haematological parameters & for estimation of LPO (lipid peroxides) as per method described by [1] just before (0h) and after disbudding on 6h, 24h and 72h. The results showed that, at 24h, T0 group showed significantly lowest Hb (10.66±0.49%) which was statistically similar to TT and TL-T groups. At 0h, 6h and 72h means of PCV% were significantly different among treatment groups. The lowest lymphocytes (64.00±1.00) was observed in TT group at 6h. The T0 group showed significantly lowest basophil (0.00±0.00) which was statistically similar to TT and TL-T groups but significantly different from TL group at 6h. At the same interval, T0 group showed significantly lowest monocytes (4.66±0.61) which was significantly different with TL, TT and TL-T groups. At 6h, T0 group showed significantly lowest N/ L ratio (0.15±0.01) which was statistically similar to TT and TL-T groups but significantly different from TL group. At 0h, 6h and 24h LPO was significantly different among groups. At 0h, T0 group showed significantly highest (106.59±0.63) which was significantly different from TL, TT and TL-T groups. It may be concluded that no significant difference was observed in eosinophil%, TLC, neutrophil% and monocyte% counts between control and treatment groups. However, Hb%, basophil%, PCV% and lymphocyte% were significantly different between control and treatment groups. N/L ratio was significant only at 6h. Most of the cases TL-T group showed comparatively better performance. At 0h, 6h and 24h LPO was significantly different among groups. At 0h, T0 group showed significantly highest (106.59±0.63) which was significantly different from TL, TT and TL-T groups.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding varying levels of Cochlospermum planchonii using 25 WAD goats. The study lasted for 84 days during which feed intake and haematological and biochemical parameters were monitored in 25 goats using a completely randomized design. Five diets consisting of pulverized Cochlospermum planchonii rhizome at varying proportions of 0 %. 5 %, 10 %, 20 % and 40 % respectively and designated as T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5 were compounded with other feed ingredients. Goats were offered concentrate and Gamba grass (Andropogon gayanus) at 08:30 am. The results obtained revealed that there was no significant difference in dry matter intake of forage but the amount of concentrate consumed by T5 was significantly (P < 0.05) lower than the other treatments. Haematological parameters such as; PCV, Hb, RBC, MCV, MCH, MCHC, WBC, neutrophils, lymphocytes and eosinophils did not differ across the treatments, while biochemical parameters such as; total protein, albumin, globulin, glucose, creatinine, urea and ALT were also similar across the treatments, however, cholesterol, AST and ALP were significantly different (P < 0.05). The study revealed that inclusion of Cochlospermum planchonii in the diets of WAD goats had no adverse effects on the haematological and serum biochemical parameters. Therefore, dietary inclusion or drenching with the plant is safe especially at 20 % inclusion.

Background: The association between the haematological profile (including abnormal platelets) and malaria is not completely understood. There are few published data on haematological profiles of malaria patients in areas with unstable malaria transmission. The current study was conducted to investigate if the haematological parameters, including platelet indices, were reliable predictors for microscopically-diagnosed malaria infection. Methods: A case-control study with a total of 324 participants (162 in each arm) was conducted at the out-patient clinic of New Halfa hospital during the rainy and post rainy season (August 2014 through to January 2015). The cases were patients with uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum (107; 66.9%) and P. vivax malaria (55, 34.0%) infections. The controls were aparasitemic individuals. The haematological parameters were investigated using an automated hemo-analyser. Results: There was no significant difference in the mean (±SD) age between the study groups; however, compared to the controls, patients with uncomplicated malaria had significantly lower haemoglobin, leucocyte and platelet counts, and significantly higher red cell distribution width (RDW), platelet distribution width (PDW) and mean platelet volume (MPV). Conclusions: The study revealed that among the haematological indices, PDW and MPV were the main predictors for uncomplicated P. falciparum and P. vivax malaria infection. The study evaluated the effect of polystyrene microplastic contaminant on hemato-biochemical parameters of Cardiosoma guanhumi from the mangrove area of Lagos Lagoon using standard methods. Total Haemocyte Count (THC) ranged between 3050.00±0.00 mL and 4200.00 ±0.05 mL with control crabs having the highest value of 4200.00±0.05 mL. There was significant difference between the treatment groups and the control (p<0.05). Hemocyte sub-population variables showed that crabs fed the control and 0.01g polystyrene microplastic diets had higher granulocyte and monocyte populations but a decrease in agranulocytes. The crabs fed with the polystyrene microplastic contaminated diets were significantly higher in serum protein (32.50±0.05-32.90±0.10 gL-1) than the crab fed with control diet (20.09±0.05 gL-1). Crabs fed 0.01g and 0.02g polystyrene microplastic based diets recorded the same aspartate aminotransferase mean value (19.30 µI-1) which was significantly higher than the mean value (11.50 µI-1) recorded in crabs fed control diet. Crab fed 0.01g polystyrene microplastic based diet recorded most of the highest values for biochemical parameters: Alanine aminotransferase (13.00±0.05 µI-1), alkaline phosphatase (113.70±0.10 µI-1), lactate dehydrogenase (148.60±0.05 µI-1) and urea (40.41 ±0.15 µI-1). The changes in the crabs’ hematological and serum biochemical profiles in this study provide reliable and discriminatory data on the effect of microplastic contaminant calling for long-term monitoring to assess the eco-health of the mangrove system.

But given the accuracy of the predictability of the results and administration, this research focuses on testing the anti-oxidant efficiency in rat models testing the biochemical parameters. Investigations have also been done on the anti-oxidant activity of Tectona, but every research was concentrated to prove the anti-oxidant activity only. extract had been tested for anti-oxidant activity by estimating various tissue parameters and it showed better activity. As predicted, there is a significant difference in the and results which can be explained are due to the physiological conditions that exist inside the body.

Abstract Tick-borne diseases are a growing threat to public health in the United States, especially among outdoor workers who experience high occupational exposure to ticks. Long-lasting permethrin-impregnated clothing has demonstrated high initial protection against bites from blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis Say (Acari: Ixodidae), in laboratory settings, and sustained protection against bites from the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum (L.) (Acari: Ixodidae), in field tests. However, long-lasting permethrin impregnation of clothing has not been field tested among outdoor workers who are frequently exposed to blacklegged ticks. We conducted a 2-yr randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded trial among 82 outdoor workers in Rhode Island and southern Massachusetts. Participants in the treatment arm wore factory-impregnated permethrin clothing, and the control group wore sham-treated clothing. Outdoor working hours, tick encounters, and bites were recorded weekly to assess protective effectiveness of long-lasting permethrin-impregnated garments. Factory-impregnated clothing significantly reduced tick bites by 65% in the first study year and by 50% in the second year for a 2-yr protective effect of 58%. No significant difference in other tick bite prevention method utilization occurred between treatment and control groups, and no treatment-related adverse outcomes were reported. Factory permethrin impregnation of clothing is safe and effective for the prevention of tick bites among outdoor workers whose primary exposure is to blacklegged ticks in the northeastern United States.

Abstract Background As brain activity depends greatly on the functions provided by lipid membranes, dietary fat in early life can affect the developing nervous system. Despite the adoption of an early more aggressive parenteral nutrition approach with amino acid infusions still reluctance to the early use of intravenous lipids in neonates. Aim To compare the effect of delayed versus early introduction of intravenous lipid in preterm on the biochemical parameters and on brain development by the cortical auditory evoked potential (CAEP) latency and amplitude. Methods This is a comparative study included 49 neonates admitted at the ain shams university NICUs. Participants were divided into two groups: 26 in group of early lipid infusion and 23 in late lipid infusion, Demographic data, and biochemical parameters were documented during the 1st 2 weeks of life. The CAEP was performed at age of 6 months. The latency and amplitude of P1 were recorded and compared between both groups. Results In the present work we found that group of early lipid infusion had reach their full oral intake earlier with shorter duration of parenteral nutrition and length of stay. They had better weight gain and significantly better glucose level control than group of late lipid infusion. There was no significant difference in the other chemical parameters between both groups expect for the higher incidence of cholestasis in the group of late lipid infusion. At 6 months of age, the group of early lipid infusion had significantly shorter latency and amplitude of P1 than the group of late lipid infusion. Conclusion Early effective nutrition positively affect feeding tolerance and weight gain and maturation of higher brain centers brain.

Aim: In this study, we aimed to evaluated whether there is an association between the biochemistry parameters obtained from the first blood test after hospitalization of COVID 19 patients and the prognosis and severity of the disease. Thus, we planned to identify patients with a severe course at an early stage and to help physicians determine the appropriate treatment. Material and Method: The study included 106 COVID 19 patients confirmed by RT-PCR. Patients were categorized into two groups: those admitted to the hospital ward and discharged with recovery (mild cases) and those admitted directly or eventually to the intensive care unit (severe cases). Biochemical parameters of the groups were compared with the Mann Whitney-U Test, as none of the compared parameters fit the normal distribution. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the male-female numbers and ages of the two groups. Statistically significant differences were observed in the length of hospital stay, procalcitonin, hs-troponin I, ferritin, glucose, urea, creatinine, calcium, direct bilirubin, AST, LDH and CRP values (p<0,05). However, no significant difference was found in sodium, potassium, chloride, total bilirubin and ALT tests. Conclusion: The results show that some biochemistry parameters may be used to predict the prognosis of the disease. In particular, procalcitonin, hs troponin I, LDH and CRP values seem to be moderate biomarkers of the prognosis of the disease.
