The physical and mechanical properties of hybrid Acacia, produced from natural crossing between two introduced timber species (Acacia auriculiformis and Acacia mangium) were studied. The timber hybrid Acacia is of medium dense having specific gravity 0.56 at green condition which is less than that of teak (Tectona grandis). The volumetric shrinkage of hybrid Acacia wood was found greater than that of teak but the specific gravity was found less than that of teak. From the study of physical and mechanical properties it is evident that the species is moderately strong. The species is suitable for making furniture and other household articles. Abstract Wood physical and mechanical properties in seven tropical hardwood species viz., Acacia auriculiformis A. Cunn. ex Benth., Artocarpus hirsutus Lamk., Artocarpus heterophyllus Lamk., Swietenia macrophylla King, Xylia dolabriformis Benth., Hevea braziliensis (H.B.K.) M. A.), and Tectona grandis L.f. have been studied by means of destructive and non-destructive techniques (NDT). Mechanical strength properties and specific gravity were evaluated by conventional methods. NDT was carried out by a Pilodyn and Treesonic Microsecond Timer (TMT) to measure a steel pin penetration depth into wood and dynamic MOE, respectively. In focus was the question, whether NDT data are suitable predictors for physical and mechanical properties of the indicated hardwood species. Dynamic MOE obtained by TMT correlated strongly positive with all the strength properties studied, except shearing stress. TMT data also correlated very well to static bending MOE and MOR. A linear relationship was found between Pilodyn steel pin penetration depth and oven dry specific gravity in all the species. Both Pilodyn and TMT proved to be useful predictors of timber properties, and these instruments have a high potential for timber grading.

Hybrid acacia, produced from natural crossing between two introduced timber species Acacia mangium and A. auriculiformies has been studied for assessing the suitability of plywood and particleboard manufacture. It was found that 1.5 mm thick smooth and figured veneer can be made and dried easily. Three-ply plywood were made using veneer of this species bonded with liquid urea formaldehyde glue of 50% solid content extended with wheat flower and catalyzed (ammonium chloride) with 2% hardener under the specific pressures, viz., 1.05, 1.40 and 1.76 N/mm2 in three replications at 6 minute press time and 120°C press temperature. Dry and wet shear test were conducted on the sample and their shear load at failure per unit area and percentage of wood failure were determined. 1.76 N/mm2 pressure for the manufacture of ply wood is found to be the best. The particleboard was tested for determining the strength and dimensional stability. The bending strength passed the standard specification, tensile strength was found to be low as per Indian standard. Abstract In this paper, bending strength and physical properties (specific gravity, dimensional stability and equilibrium moisture content) of a Malaysian bamboo locally known as Beting bamboo (Gigantochloa levis) are addressed. Characterizations of physical and bending strength of G. levis in terms of the variability of location along culm height (top, middle, bottom), culm section (nodes and internodes), fiber orientation (longitudinal, tangential and radial) and culm layer (outer and inner) were conducted. Comparison of these properties is also made to some bamboo and commercial timber species. It was found that G. levis has favorable physical and mechanical properties although the specific gravity of G. levis has tendency to be on the higher side. The characteristics studied were found to have some variability at different locations, sections, and directions. There was variability in terms of bending strength along with the culm height of bamboo. It is indicated from this study that the bending strength and physical properties of G. levis were found to be satisfactory.

Wood has several unique, independent properties. The physical and mechanical properties of wood do vary from species to species and even within species due to environmental conditions during growth. In Nigeria, timber is been grade based on permissible stress (NCP) an upgrade to the limit state is required. A laboratory test was carried out to develop the physical and mechanical properties (four-point bending test) of the timber species in accordance with EN 13153-1, ASTM D143 and EN 408. The strength classification of selected timber was performed according to EN 338 using characteristic value of the material properties in accordance with EN384 from the generated physical and mechanical properties, after being adjusted to 12% (Eurocodes reference moisture content). The timber species considered were Tectona grandis and Gmelina arborea. The result showed Tectona grandis had a higher property than Gmelina arborea and the species were assigned to strength classes of D50 and D35 (hardwoods) respectively. Timber Acacia mangium (Acacia mangium, Willd) for Furniture. The study aims to determine the mechanical and physical properties and the decorative value (color and fiber) wood of acacia mangium with using finishing materials. This type of finishing material used is ultran lasur natural dof ,ultran lasur classic teak, aqua politur clear dof, aqua politur akasia dan aqua politur cherry. After finishing the wood is stored for 3 months. Test parameters were observed, namely, physical and mechanical properties of wood, adhesion of finishing materials, color and appearance of the fiber, and timber dimensions expansion. The results showed that the mechanical physical properties of acacia wood qualified SNI. 01-0608-89 about the physical and mechanical properties of wood for furniture, air dry the moisture content from 13.78 to 14.89%, flexural strength from 509.25 to 680.50 kg/cm2, and compressive strength parallel to fiber 342.1 - 412.9 kg/cm2. Finishing the treatment process using five types of finishing materials can increase the decorative value (color and fiber) wood. Before finishing the process of acacia mangium wood has the appearance of colors and fibers and less attractive (scale scores 2-3), after finishing acacia wood fibers have the appearance of colors and interesting and very interesting (scale 4-5).Keywords: mangium wood, mechanical properties, decorative value, finishing, furniture.

The present investigation aims to determine the physical and mechanical properties in three-layer boards of Teak (Tectona grandis), Seike (Cedrelinga catenaeformis) and Mascarey (Hieronima alchorneoides), from the PISMADE S.A. Company, Canton Riobamba, province of Chimborazo. The three specimens used for each of the species in each of the tests performed were worked on using the ASTM D143-94 standard for the tests of parallel compression, perpendicular compression and flexion, and the DIN-52182 standard, with the main variation in thickness measurements caused by the commercial use established by the company. Mechanical tests showed that Seike had the best results, being superior in two tests: perpendicular compression and flexion. Teak tests gave us results that were superior in the perpendicular compression test. Mascarey, unlike the two species mentioned above, had complications during the trials due to problems with the glue between layers. Resumen La presente investigación pretende: Determinar las propiedades físicas y mecánicas en tableros tricapa de Teca, Seike (Cedrelinga catenaeformis) y Mascarey (Hyeronima alchorneoides), Empresa PISMADE S.A., cantón Riobamba, provincia de Chimborazo; para lo cual se utilizaron 3 probetas por cada una de las especies en cada uno de los ensayos realizados, las mismas fueron trabajadas con base a la Norma ASTM D143-94 para las pruebas de compresión paralela, compresión perpendicular y flexión y la Norma DIN-52182, teniendo como principal variación en las medidas de espesor debido al uso comercial establecido por la empresa. Las pruebas mecánicas mostraron que Seike tuvo los mejores resultados al ser superior en dos ensayos: Compresión perpendicular y flexión. Los ensayos con Teca nos dieron como resultados que es superior en el ensayo de compresión perpendicular. Mascarey a diferencia de las dos especies mencionadas anteriormente tuvo complicaciones con los ensayos debido a problemas con el pegamento entre capas. This study aims to examine the physical and mechanical properties of gypsum board from Acacia mangium Willd wood waste based on gypsum content and wood powder size. This study refers to the JIS A 5417-1992 standard. This research were conducted at Wood Work Shop laboratory for the preparation of raw materials, Wood Technology laboratory Faculty of Forestry for board making and testing the physical properties of gypsum boards, and  PT. Duta Pertiwi Nusantara laboratory to test the mechanical properties of the gypsum board. The material used is  A. mangium W. Wood powder, gypsum flour, water and borax. The study uses Factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with two factors, namely factor A (gypsum content) which consists of gypsum content of 400%, 500% and 600% of the weight of A. mangium W. wood powder, and factors B (wood powder size) consists of 20 mesh passes 40 mesh retained and 40 mesh passes 60 mesh retained. The results showed that the density (600% gypsum content of 40 and 60 mesh retained wood powder size), moisture content, thickness swelling, MOE (600% gypsum content of 40 and 60 mesh retained wood powder size) fulfill JIS A5417-1992 standard. The best gypsum board is gypsum board with gypsum content of 600% with a wood powder size is 40 mesh.Keyword: Acacia mangium, gypsum board, gypsum content, wood powder size.

The possibility of the application of impact microindentation method for testing the physic and mechanical properties of cast iron using the IFMH-C instrument developed at the Institute of applied physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus was tested. It was established that the method and the instrument allow to estimate such parameters as Brinell hardness in the range of 100–500 HB, elastic modulus from 40 to 200 MPa, as well as to determine the tensile strength of the flake and spheroidal graphite cast irons. The possibility of using the instrument for non-destructive test directly of parts and products in the manufacturing environments is shown.

Association of nitrogen transforming bacteria in soils under six-forest tree plantations viz. Lagerstroemia speciosa, Acacia auriculiformis, Acacia mangium, Dipterocarpus turbinatus, Tectona grandis, and Eucalyptus camaldulensis were assessed in the present study. Azotobacter population was the least among the nitrogen-transforming bacteria in all soils. Soils under L. speciosa had the lowest population of ammonifying, Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter and denitrifying bacteria and A. auriculiformis had higher average MPN values, although E. camaldulensis had the highest Nitrobacter population. Population of the microorganisms was positively and significantly correlated with each other, except Azotobacter. Azotobacter was only significantly correlated with the denitrifying bacteria. ABSTRACT Allelopathy is the compound released by the plants to the environtment where actualy another plants is living in.  The purpose of this research were to find out the effect of allelopathy which came from earpod wattle (Acacia auriculiformis), black wattle (Acacia mangium), and teak (Tectona grandis) to the seedlings plants of earpod wattle, black wattle, and teak, and also to find out the effect of allelopathy above mentioned that had the weakest effect.  This research was designed based on factorial in a complete random design.  Factor I was the seedlings which consist of earpod wattle, black wattle, and teak, while factor II was the allelopathy which consists of non allelopathy was used, the use of allelopathy from the extraction of earpod wattle leaves, the extraction of black wattle leaves, and the extraction of teak leaves.  The variable that was observed were seedlings height increasing, seedlings stem diameter increasing, number of leaves increasing, and living percentage of the seedlings.  This observation data was tested by Bartlett test to know the homogenity of variance.  Then it was analyzed by analysis of variance, then it is continually tested by least significant difference test.  All the counting were done at 5% significant level.  The result of this research showed that allelopathy which one came from earpod wattle, black wattle, and teak were not different effect for seedlings from allelopathy source in the same species.  The giving of black wattle allelopathy had significant different effect in height earpod wattle seedlings.  That also the giving of teak allelopathy had significant different effect in height black wattle seedlings.  The earpod wattle allelopathy had significant different effect in diameter of stem earpod wattle, black wattle, and teak seedlings.  Key words : allelopathy, extraction of earpod wattle, black wattle, and teak, seedlings growth
