The purpose of the present study was to estimate the effect of phenotypic characteristics on the performances of bulls at three AI centres/stations (CCBSDF, Savar, RDCIF, Rajabarihat and District AI centres, Rajshahi). A total 71 bulls were studied for phenotypic parameters, viz., body weight, body condition score, scrotal circumference (SC), libido score and time required between two ejaculates during 1993 to 2002. The information on the phenotypic parameters was obtained by interviewing the semen collectors in respective AI centers, reading the AI bull resister as well as examining and observing the bull during semen collection. The bulls were classified according to genetic composition viz., Group I: 100% Friesian, Group II: 100% Sahiwal, Group III: 75% Friesian? 25% Local, Group IV: 50% Sahiwa l?50% Friesian, Group V: 50% Friesian ? 50% Local and Group VI: 100% Local. In general, the average body weight, body condition score, scrotal circumference (SC), libido score and time required between two ejaculates were 572 ? 124 kg, 3.2 ? 0.5 (Score:1-5), 36.3 ? 1.9cm, 3.3 ? 0.6 (Score:1-5) and 7.1 ? 2.3 minutes, respectively. Individual bull had significant effect on phenotypic characteristics in six genetic groups. The overall better performance of phenotypic parameter was observed in bull Id #: 0065 for Friesian breed, 163 for 100% Sahiwal breed, 7811 for 75% Friesian ?25% Local, 5156 for 50% Sahiwal?50% Friesian, 8224 for 50% Friesian ? 50% Local and 40248 for 100% Local breed. Therefore, phenotypic characteristics has clearly influenced on bull performances of Artificial Insemination (AI) programme in Bangladesh. Apart from all the issues regarding health and undesirable recessive genes, which are determining factors to identify bulls not suitable for AI, there are other aspects which can be considered. The principal aims of AI studs are the selection of the best animals from a genetic point of view and the production of semen in a very short time, in order to start progeny testing as soon as possible. In Italy progeny testing starts when 1200 straws for each young bull are available. This requirement implies that bulls should be in good physical condition. According to this, the genetic centre of the Italian Holstein Breeder Association (ANAFI) has been paying growing attention to animal welfare and fitness, recording routinely some biometrical indicators. Body weight (BW), scrotal circumference (SC), body condition score (BCS) are some examples of this policy and could be helpful and easy predictors of reproductive performance for a young progeny testing dairy bull. The objective of this report was to conduct a preliminary analysis on the genetic aspects of BW, BCS, SC, age at the 1st usable straw (AGE1) and age at the 1200th straw (AGE1200) in Italian Holstein young bulls.

Some reproductive parameters of one-year-old 20 of each Red Sokoto and Kano Brown bucks were investigated. For the Red Sokoto and Kano Brown breeds of bucks, the mean (±S.E.) body weight, body condition score, scrotal circumference, testes weight, testes volume, epididymal length, epididymal volume, epididymal weight, testes sperm and epididymal sperm were 13.84± 0.54 vs 11.69 ± 0.35kg, 2.15±0.08 vs 2.10± 0.07, 19.83± 0.36 vs 18.27± 0.49cm, 36.41± 1.89 vs 29.70±1.98g, 35.63± 1.87 vs 29.48± 1.9ml, 10.67±0.20 vs 9.66± 0.25cm, 6.16± 0.23 vs 5.44±0.31ml 6.46± 0.24 vs 5.53± 0.34g, 0.24± 0.02 vs 0.16± 0.01 x 109 and 2.47± 0.16 vs 1.59± 0.16 x 109 respectively, and were significantly different between the breeds. The percentage epididymal segments mass and sperm were also depicted. There were highly significant correlations between many of the reproductive parameters in both breeds. The Red Sokoto bucks seem more adapted than the Kano Brown in terms of their reproductive make-up.

The aim of this study was to evaluate odds ratio (OR) of management factors on infertility of artificial insemination results. Three traditional farmer groups were purposively choosed, based on percentage of calf born of AI program. Group I, with calves born of 61.22%, Group II with calves born of 38,89 %, and group III with calves born of 30,0%. The management factors evaluated were 1. ownerships of cattle, 2. raise cattle in separate pen with other, 3. cattle raised in pen dirty pen, 4. not enough feed given 5. body condition score. The data was obtained by dichotomy questioner and observation then evaluated using odds ratio (OR), when OR more than 1 indicated the high risk of factor to infertility. The results of OR in Group I showed that ownership (1,18), separated pen (0,54), dirty pen (2,11), less feed (3,20) and body condition (0,22). The results in Group II showed that ownership (0,83) , separated pen (1,12), dirty pen (0,14), less feed (2,08) and body condition (2,00). The results of odds ratios in Group III showed that ownership (1,63), separated pen (3,83), dirty pen (0,88), less feed (1,00) and body condition (0,12). These data indicated that ownerships, dirty pen, less feed and body condition were factors which may confounding with other factors. However less OR of separate pen were, in Group I (0,54), Group II (1,12) and Group III (3,83) consistently with number of calves produced. It can be concluded that separate pen was a factor which influence calves produced in using artificial insemination.

This study was carried out to document the pelvic and testicular biometric characteristics of Sahel goats. Record of body weight, body condition score, height at withers, scrotal length, scrotal circumference and external pelvic circumference were obtained from 400 male and 600 female Sahel goats. All the goats were approximately 1.5 years old and weighing 14 to 18 kg, with body condition score of 3 or 4 (scale of 1-5). The mean bodyweight of Sahel bucks was 15.12 ± 1.10 kg while that of Sahel does was 13.22 ± 1.12 kg, height at withers in bucks and does were 52.22 ± 1.20 cm, and 48.13 ± 1.23 cm respectively. The scrotal length and circumference in Sahel bucks were 11.39 ± 1.12 cm and 17.95 ± 1.21 cm respectively. The external pelvic circumference in Sahel does was 55.13 ± 1.16 cm. There was significant (P<0.05) positive correlation between the body weight and body condition score in bucks (r=0.52) and in does (r=0.42). It was observed that there was weak but positive correlation between the body weight and height at withers (r=0.34), in bucks and in does (r=0.25; P <0.5). A low but significant positive correlation was found between the body weight and scrotal circumference r=0.28, (P<0.05) in bucks. There was a highsignificant positive correlation between the scrotal length and scrotal circumference r=0.66, (P <0.05).  The external pelvic circumference in Sahel does was also significantly positively correlated with body weight r=0.40, (P<0.05) and with the body condition score r= 0.33, (P<0.05). In conclusion, the body weight, body condition score, height at withers, scrotal length, scrotal circumference and external pelvic circumference of Sahel goats in Maiduguri were successfully determined, these parameters studied might serve as a bases for determining the breeding soundness of Sahel goats.

The prevalence of feline obesity is influenced by numerous factors, including inactivity and overconsumption of food. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of feeding frequency on physical activity in adult cats. A total of twelve healthy adult cats were used in a cross-over study consisting of 32 d. In each of the two periods, six cats were fed either two meals or four meals daily. Throughout the study, cats were fed the same diet at amounts to maintain body weight and body condition score. Cats were individually housed 4 h/d at each scheduled feeding time, while for the other 20 h, cats were group-housed to allow for voluntary physical activity in the room with a 16 h light–8 h dark cycle. Voluntary activity levels were evaluated using Actical activity collars for seven consecutive days in each period. Daily average activity level for two-meal-fed cats (20·04 (sem 2·19), activity counts/epoch (15 s)) was not different from four-meal-fed cats (20·14 (sem 2·15), activity counts/epoch (15 s); P>0·05). In conclusion, when group-housed cats are fed to maintain their body weight and body condition score, varied feeding frequency between twice and four times daily may not affect activity levels.
