Lolita was written by a Russian writer Vladirmir Nabokov in the twentieth century. Humbert, the male character in the story, was considered to be an ephebophile since he was attracted to girls in their adolescences. The author wrote about the character’s sexual orientation which led to his downfall. Psychological approach and ephebophilia theory applied in this research in order to reveal the description of Humbert’s sexual orientation.  Meanwhile, the data for this research were taken from the dialogues and narrations in Lolita novel. As it is a library research, the writers took the seconday data needed from books, journals, articles, and internet sites to analyze the issue. Hence, in conducting the research, descriptive qualitative method was applied to elaborate the data concerning to the research queation. After applying those techniques and analyzing data, the writers drew several conclusions. Ephebophilia was not only focus on the sexual encounters, but also on the sexual attraction. In this case, the construction of ephebohilia in the main character was influenced by his unforgettable sexual encounter with his teenage lover. Therefore, Humbert became fixated to much younger women and he could not escape from his burning desire. His sexual encountered with his teenage lover had also influenced the way he saw the young girls. He often fantasized and sexually attracted to them. Overall, throughout the story, Humbert had suffered due to his sexual orientation. Nabokov was able to present the male character’s dilema and grief who desperately needed help.

<p><em>In modern era, problems occur continuously and it triggers stress and anxiety. This study aims to describe characterization and the anxiety of the main character in ‘The Old Man and The Sea’, a novel by Ernest Hemingway. This studybelongs to library research that applied descriptive qualitative method with psychological approach. Reading and documentation techniques were used to collect the data. To analize the anxiety of the main character, a theory on psychological anxiety by Durand and Barlow were used. The result shows that: 1) the main character, Santiago, is described as a man who is kind, industrious, ambitious, powerful, smart, calm, cheerful, patient, confident and stubborn, 2) the anxieties felt by Santiago are Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Panic Disorder, Specific Phobia, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).</em></p><p><strong>Keywords</strong>: a<em>nxiety</em><em>, </em><em>Ernest Hemingway</em><em>, </em><em>psychological approach</em></p><p>_________________________________________</p><p>DOI &gt; <a href="https://search.crossref.org/?q=10.24071%2Fjoll.2019.190203">https://doi.org/10.24071/joll.2019.190203</a></p><p><em><br /></em></p><p><em> </em></p>

Destruction Caused by Greed and Brutality as Reflected in Shakespeare’s Macbeth: A Psychological Approach becomes the title of the research. It is intended to describe the greed and brutality of the main character; the main character’s id, ego, and super ego; the catastrophe suffered by the main character, and the moral values of this drama. The subject of the research is Macbeth, a play written by William Shakespeare and the main character’s greed. The object is the psychological aspect of the main character. The research belongs to a library research since its sources are taken from books. Horney’s theory of greed is applied to analyze the data. The study found several interesting results. First, Macbeth becomes a king by murdering King Duncan (a form of Macbeth’s greed). Second, Macbeth’s brutality is shown by murdering Banquo’s and Macduff’s family. Third, Macbeth’s id is murdering the king and the followers; the ego supports the King; and the super ego cuts of the King head when Birnam wood comes. The play delivers several messages to the readers, such as those who plant will harvest and the good deed will destroy the bad deed.

Self-identity is an aspect that every human in the world has. Without it, a person is in danger of being negatively affected by those around him/her and by the outside world. Some people are grappling with this identity-forming phase in their search for self-definition. This is reflected in Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. Therefore, this research aims to describe the main characters' search for self-identity as seen in the novel. The type of this research was library research. This research applied a psychological approach, and the data were analyzed using the descriptive qualitative method. The results showed that Kathy and Tommy's quest to find their true selves occurred in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood stages. Narrated by Kathy, she flashed back the memories of how they, Kathy and Tommy, are puzzled because of too many mysteries in Hailsham, the boarding school where they live. They connected each puzzle which could be the answer. But, in the novel, the question they belong to for being different brought them to another question. The process of findings itself flowed as long as they grew. In the end, they found information about their identity as a clone and as an individual.

Literary works are the reflection of real life. Movie is a literary work that tells a story by using some conflict. The character in a movie usually describes the human psychology and behavior. Ambition is one of human psychology. This research discusses about the ambition of the main characters in Perfume: the Story of a Murderer. This movie tells about the ambitious the main character to make a perfume by killed 26 victims. He has an ambition to fulfill their psychogenic needs. The fulfillment of psychogenic needs that is experienced by the main character on the movie is analyzed in Henry Murray's The Need Theory of Personality. This research is conducted by using the qualitative method. This research uses psychological approach to analyze the fictitious of the main character. The result from this study is that the ambition has the causes and the effects.Keywords: Movie, Psychogenic needs, Ambition, Psychological Approach.

The aims of this study are to analyze and identify; (1) Mark Watney’s optimism in the novel and (2) the impact of being optimistic as reflected in the novel. This study belongs to library research. To analyze the data, this study applies a psychological approach. The analyzed data are described by using the descriptive qualitative method, then. After analyzing the novel, it is found that; first, Mark Watney as the protagonist character is an optimist person proved by his goals and expectancy. Based on the types of optimism, Mark’s optimism refers to the comparative optimism and situational optimism. Second, the impact of being optimistic for Mark Watney are; he has high self-efficacy and hopes that somehow leads him to find a way to communicate with people on Earth, growing food and eventually manages to find his way back to the earth.

This study is entitled “Characterization and Three Dimensions of the Main Character in Looking For Alaska”. This study is concerned with the method of the characterization based on the three dimensions of the main character and intrinsic elements in the novel. The main purpose of this study is to find out how the author presents the main character in terms of the physiological, psychological, and sociological dimensions. This study was based on library research and used documentation method in collecting data. Then the data obtained were analyzed descriptively using descriptive qualitative method. Some theories of characterization were used such as the theory of characterization proposed by Kenney (1966), the theory of character dimensions by Egri (1960). The data source of this study is a novel entitled Looking For Alaska by John Green (2011). The analysis started with the overview of the biography of John Green and that was followed by the synopsis of the novel, and the data was categorized based on the theories. Based on Kenney’s theory, the main character is shaped through the mixing method of the characterization. In addition, based on Egri’s theory, there are three character dimensions (physiological, psychological, and sociological) involved in the shaping and presentation of the main character.

This paper discusses Amir’s anxiety and motive in Khaled Hosseini’s “The Kite Runner". The library research method was applied in this research. In analyzing the data, the structural approach was used to scrutinize the intrinsic elements such as character, conflict, setting, and plot, while the psychological approach was used to examine extrinsic elements such as anxiety and motive of Amir as the main character in “The Kite Runner”. The results show that Amir, as the main character, is a caring, inferior, coward, optimistic, anxious, selfish, careless, sly, and patient person. It also indicates that Amir is a round static character since he has complex traits but his character as a caring person remains the same from the beginning to the end of the story. Besides, as the main character, Amir experienced both internal and external conflicts. The settings of time, social, and place showed the period in Afghanistan between 1975 and 2001 and the social stratum, Pashtun and Hazara in Kabul.  Dealing with the plot, it starts from Amir’s effort to get Baba’s recognition and respect, Amir’s anxiety after betraying Hassan, Amir efforts to take Sohrab out from Kabul, the liberation of Sohrab from Assef, the Sohrab suicide trial, up to Amir’s effort to get back Sohrab trust. Also, Amir’s anxiety deals with realistic, neurotic, and moral anxiety, while the motives are safety and security need, belongingness and love need, and self-esteem needs.

Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan ketidakadilan gender dalam bidang sosial, politik dan ekonomi serta bentuk perlawanan tokoh utama dalam Perempuan di Titik Nol, novel Karya Nawal el-Saadawi. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kepustakaan bersifat deskriptif  kualitatif. Sumber data adalah novel Perempuan di Titik Nol Karya Nawal el-Saadawi yang diterbitkan oleh Yayasan Obor Indonesia 2006. Data dalam penelitian ini berupa kutipan kata, frasa, klausa, kalimat dan paragraf dari novel. Dari hasil penelitian ini, ditemukan dua hal yakni, 1) ketidakadilan gender dalam bidang sosial pada novel Perempuan di Titik Nol berupa tindakan kekerasan, penghinaan dan pelecehan terhadap tokoh utama serta cacian dari kaum laki-laki. Ketidakadilan gender dalam bidang politik berupa batasan untuk memperoleh pendidikan dan dibatasinya ruang bagi kaum perempuan untuk terlibat dalam ranha politik. Ketidakadilan gender dalam bidang ekonomi pada novel Perempuan di Titik Nol berupa beban kerja yang dialami oleh tokoh Firdaus yang sangat padat sehingga dia harus bekerja keras untuk bertahan hidup. Bentuk perlawanan tokoh utama dalam Novel Perempuan di Titik Nol berupa perlawanan tokoh utama terhadap proses stereotip, subordinasi marginal dan kekerasan terhadap perempuan.Kata kunci: novel, ketidakadilan gender, feminisme  This research aimed to reveal and describe gender inequity in Perempuan di Titik Nol novel by Nawal el-Saadawi in social, political, and economic sectors and the main character’s resistance. This is a library research using descriptive qualitative method. Data source of this study is Perempuan di Titik Nol novel by Nawal el-Saadawi, published by Yayasan Obor Indonesia in 2006. Data of the research are quoted words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and paragraphs from the novel Perempuan di Titik Nol by Nawal el-Saadawi. The results of this study discovered 3 issues, i.e. 1) gender inequities in social sector in the novel Perempuan di Titik Nol are the main character experienced many acts of violence, humiliation, and harassment against her as well as insult from men, 2) gender inequities in politic sphere are a limitation to obtain education and space for women to be involved in politic field, and 3) gender inequities in economic sector are the workload experienced by Firdaus is extremely heavy so he must work hard to be able to survive. The main character’s resistance in the novel Perempuan di Titik Nol is the resistance to the stereotyping, marginal subordination, or violence against women.Keywords: novel, gender inequity, feminism

The film Friends with Benefits is the data source in this study. In collecting the data through library research by viewing films, reading scripts, and taking notes. In analyzing the data, the qualitative method is used and presented descriptively based on the theory adopted in this study. The theory used in this study is the theory of literature proposed by Wellek and Warren (1949) about characterization. The results of this study showed that only three characterization dimensions were analyzed. In presenting these dimensions, this study presents an overview and/or dialogue from the film. There are three dimensions of the characterization of the main character analyzed in this study: physiological, sociological, and psychological. These physical and psychological characteristics combine to build up Jamie Rellis and Dylan Harper, a romantic person in the film Friends with Benefits.

The title of this study is “Character and Characterization of the Main Character in  The Legend of Hercules Movie by Renny Harlin”. This topic was chosen to better understand the main characters of Alcides (Hercules) in the movie The Legend of Hercules. This study is intended to analyze the method of characterization which is used by the author in the movie The Legend of Hercules. It also analyzes the physiological, sociological, and psychological aspects of the main character. The data were taken from the movie The Legend of Hercules published in 2014. This study was library research and used documentation method in collecting the data. Then the obtained data were analyzed descriptively using the qualitative method. This study applied the theory of the method of characterization stated by Kenney (1966) in his book “How to Analyze Fiction” and the theory of three dimensions by Egri in Sukada (1987) in his book “Beberapa aspek Tentang Sastra”. The result of this study shows the method of characterization and three dimensions applied in this movie. From this study, we can conclude that Alcides (Hercules) is the main character in this movie. The author applied more than one methods in characterizing the main character in the movie. The methods are; discursive method, dramatic method, and character on other character methods. In addition, based on Egri’s theory, there are three character dimensions (physiology, sociology, and psychology) involved in the shaping and presentation of the main character. From the physiological aspect, it is described that Alcides (Hercules) is twenty years old. From the sociological aspect, Alcides (Hercules) is the son of Zeus and from the psychological aspect, it is described that he is a good person.
