The three-color system containing signals of the same circular shape has been in existence for over a hundred years. Each traffic signal has been justifiably selected to have a special color light to correspond to human psychoemotional reaction (red – stop, yellow – caution, green – go) to a given color signal (British Standards, 2015) and to comply with the laws of physics (The Motivated Engineer, 2015) – Rayleigh’s scattering law (Banc SpaceTek, 2017). The main downsides of the traditional road traffic light include the following: • The uniform circular shape of light signals results in uncertainty and difficulties for road users with color blindness and visual impairments, resulting in the need for restrictions or bans on driving license issuance in some countries. This uncertainty becomes particularly acute in conditions of low visibility. • According to the concept of harmony of form and color (Itten, 1961), a green light alone corresponds to the circular (spherical-like) shape of the signal. Red and amber lights harmoniously combine with other geometrical shapes. • The uniform shape of light signals prevents the implementation of the original compact combined model of traffic lights. For example, during the day, colorblind people can tell which signal is which because there is a standard position assigned: top – bottom or right – left (Oliveira, Souza, Junior, Sales & Ferraz, 2015). This becomes problematic if the compact combined models of traffic lights are used. Engineers and inventors have been trying to solve these problems by introducing random changes in the light signal shape and complicating the traffic light design. For a long time there have been different proposals about how to eliminate the demerits of the existing traffic lights: from arbitrary changes in the signal shape (Patterson, 1988) to transformation of traffic lights into a single-section display panel (Kulichenko, 2011) which replaces among others stationary road signs. However, technical solutions like these deprive the traffic light of its signal uniformity and conciseness (simplicity, clarity and precision of its controlling effect), features which help safe traffic regulation in a busy and dynamic mode. Technical modernization of individual signal components has been going hand in hand with technological developments as light sources, diffusers, lenses, controllers, materials, control systems, timers, etc. are improved. However, adequate design and aesthetic proposals are considerably behind. The aim of this paper is to propose a concept of creating control signals of traffic light that harmonize color and form, and, as a result, to create a new model of traffic light that will be convenient for all road users.

There is considered a problem of road traffic organization at crossroads under conditions of urban environment and outgoing highways. The urgency of the problem of automated traffic control with the information for vehicle drivers about traffic situation using both navigation systems and warning systems by means of signal transfer to radar-detectors is shown. The investigation purpose consists in the development of automated self-regulated system of traffic lights control on the basis of vehicle number approaching to the traffic lights and vehicle driver warning about traffic jam approaching for the purpose of its going around. In the paper there are solved problems regarding traffic capacity of a megapolis traffic system, driver warning about problem road situations and the automation of these processes. On the basis of the theory of automated control there is shown a developed system allowing the formation of a traffic passage by means of driver warning about traffic jam ahead. There are described thoroughly component parts of the system limiting only with the choice of components among prototypes available in the market. A principle of automated traffic flow control at the crossroads supplied with the traffic lights is shown. There is shown a functional diagram of the interaction of system components for the successful traffic organization. The algorithm of the system automation functioning with its adjustment to certain time intervals of the effect of the enabling traffic light signal at a particular T-shaped or X-shaped intersection is described. The system developed for traffic control at intersections allows relieving considerably city streets. The analysis of the system has shown that traffic lights adaptive control allows decreasing traffic up to 70%. The application of domestic software components decreases system cost by 2-4 times as compared with foreign prototypes which, among other things, do not have the functional offered.

The number of vehicles on the roads of Almaty, Kazakhstan is growing from year to year. This brings about an increasing intensity and density of traffic flows in the streets which leads to congestion, decreasing speed of the traffic flow, increasing environmental pollution caused by car emissions, and which can potentially lead to the road traffic accidents (RTA), including fatalities. While the number of injuries grows up mainly due to drivers’ non-compliance with the speed limit, the environmental pollution is caused by longer traffic jams. Therefore, to reduce the level of road traffic injuries and emissions into the environment it is necessary to ensure the uniform movement of traffic flows in cities. Currently, one of the effective ways to do it is the use of transport telematics systems, in particular, control systems for road signs, road boards and traffic lights. The paper presents an analysis of existing systems and methods of traffic light regulation. The  analyses of the systems and methods are based on the use of homogeneous data, that is the data on standard parameters of traffic flows. The need in collecting and analyzing additional semi-structured data on the factors that have a significant impact on the traffic flows parameters in cities is shown as well. The work is dedicated to solving the problem of analysis and forecast of traffic flows in the city of Almaty, Kazakhstan. GPS data on the location of individual vehicles is used as the initial data for solving this problem. By projecting the obtained information onto the graph of the city's transport network, as well as using additional filtering, it is possible to obtain an estimate of individual parameters of traffic flows. These parameters are used for short-term forecast of the changes in the city's transport network.

Traffic lights play such important role in traffic management to control the traffic on the road. Situation at traffic light area is getting worse especially in the event of emergency cases. During traffic congestion, it is difficult for emergency vehicle to cross the road which involves many junctions. This situation leads to unsafe conditions which may cause accident. An Automatic Traffic Light Controller for Emergency Vehicle is designed and developed to help emergency vehicle crossing the road at traffic light junction during emergency situation. This project used Peripheral Interface Controller (PIC) to program a priority-based traffic light controller for emergency vehicle. During emergency cases, emergency vehicle like ambulance can trigger the traffic light signal to change from red to green in order to make clearance for its path automatically. Using Radio Frequency (RF) the traffic light operation will turn back to normal when the ambulance finishes crossing the road. Result showed the design is capable to response within the range of 55 meters. This project was successfully designed, implemented and tested.

Yogyakarta has increasing trends in the number of vehicles and consequently intensifying the traffic volume and will effect to higher emission and air pollution. Traffic lights duration plays a vital role in congestion mitigation in the critical intersections of urban areas. This study has objective to minimize the number of vehicles waiting in line by developing the hybrid simulation method. First of all, the MKJI and Webster method were calculated to determine the green traffic light. Then, the simulation model was developed to evaluate the number of vehicles waiting in line according to different duration of green traffic lights from MKJI and Webster method. A case study will then be provided in Pelemgurih intersection located in Yogyakarta, Indonesia for demonstrating the applicability of the developed method. The result shows that the duration of green traffic lights calculated by Webster method provides lower number of vehicles waiting in line. It is due to the short duration of green traffic light resulted by Webster method so that the traffic light cycle becomes shorter and it effects the number of vehicles waiting in line which is lower than MKJI method. The results obtained can help the generating desired decision alternatives that will important for Department of Transportation, Indonesia to enhance the road traffic management with low number of vehicles waiting in line.

In this paper, we present a new scheme to intelligently control the cycles and phases of traffic lights by exploiting the road traffic data collected by a wireless sensor network installed on the road. The traffic light controller determines the next phase of traffic lights by applying the Ant Colony Optimazation metaheuristics to the information collected by WSN. The objective of this system is to find an optimal solution that gives the best possible results in terms of reducing the waiting time of vehicles and maximizing the flow crossing the intersection during the green light. The results of simulations by the SUMO traffic simulator confirm the preference of the developed algorithm over the predefined time controller and other dynamic controllers.

Abstract The dynamic management of traffic light cycles is a really interesting research issue considering modern technologies, which can be used in order to optimise road junctions and then improve living conditions of the roads. Wireless sensor networks represent the most suitable technology, as they are easy to deploy and manage. The data relating to road traffic flows can be detected by the sensor network and then processed through the innovative approach, proposed in this work, in order to determine the right green times at traffic lights. Although wireless sensor networks are characterized by very low consumption devices, the continuous information transmission reduces the life cycle of the whole network. To this end, the proposed architecture provides a technique to power the sensor nodes based on piezoelectric materials, which allow producing potential energy taking advantage of the vibration produced by the passage of vehicles on the road.

This paper proposed an algorithm for a deep learning network for identifying circular traffic lights (CTL-DNNet). The sample labeling process uses translation to increase the number of positive samples, and the similarity is calculated to reduce the number of negative samples, thereby reducing overfitting. We use a dataset of approximately 370[Formula: see text]000 samples, with approximately 20[Formula: see text]000 positive samples and approximately 350[Formula: see text]000 negative samples. The datasets are generated from images taken at the Beijing Garden Expo. To obtain a very robust method for the detection of traffic lights, we use different layers, different cost functions and different activation functions of the depth neural network for training and comparison. Our algorithm has evaluated autonomous vehicles in varying illumination and gets the result with high accuracy and robustness. The experimental results show that CTL-DNNet is effective at recognizing road traffic lights in the Beijing Garden Expo area.

Abstract The paper aims to explore the possibilities of improving road traffic in the central area of cities characterized by a longitudinal arrangement of the street network, with application for the case of Pitesti, where the road network in the central area consists of two main roads arranged longitudinally, having one-way regulated traffic, interconnected by several streets. A special traffic problem is reported in the city center: on the main road connecting the two boulevards, the vehicle storage space is insufficient - because the distance between the two road intersections is too small and there is no correlation between the Green phases of traffic lights in the two intersections. The research, based on traffic measurements performed with DataFromSky software and micro-simulation traffic analyses performed with Vissim PTV software, indicated that the best solution is the partial or total correlation of the green time from the traffic light intersections that delimit the connecting road artery. As, almost exclusively, the works dedicated to the correlation of green light of traffic lights treat the problem only along the road arteries, this paper raises a special issue and reveals the possibility of simple solutions, by correlating the traffic lights at the intersections connecting the main arteries.

KS Tubun Street is a street in Bogor, which has a fairly high vehicle volume and become one of a high-traffic jam area. This is caused by KS Tubun Street is the main road for road users from Jakarta and Bogor. Traffic jam problem that occurs due to the confluence interchange of traffic flow and traffic lights settings that are not proportional to the volume of vehicles across the road. Optimization of traffic flow at KS Tubun Street performed by the stages of forming a model of traffic flow, determining the density and velocity of the vehicle is based on the Greenberg model, and determining the length of the traffic lights to avoid a buildup of vehicles. The result is a traffic flow model with distance and time parameters. The density of vehicles that occurs on the streets of KS. Tubun street based on the Greenberg model between 180 to 240 unit car of passanger (ucp) with the average velocity of vehicles 15 to 19.5 km per hour. The density of vehicles on KS. Tubun street can be break down by increasing time. Traffic light cycle time can be reduced for 8 seconds with the red light glowing time is 80 seconds and the green light glowing time is 62 seconds.

Advance of a road traffic light control system using Programmable Logic Controller is the principal of the system. This system can be divided into two parts which are hardware and software. The hardware part for this system is a model of four -way junction of a traffic light. The Red, Yellow and Green are installed at each lane to represent as a traffic light signal indicator. This switches and lamps are linked to PLC. The PLC receives signal which is coming from the inputs (sensor and switch) and drives the units (lamps or relays). In the system, Siemens s7-200 PLC is used as the main controller of the traffic light system. The Step7 Micro Win software can be developed the ladder logic diagram which can control the traffic light for proposed system. So, the traffic light system can be successfully controlled by PLC.
