In this paper, the acid-base and tautomeric equilibria of four nitrofluorescein dyes, 2,4,5,7-tetranitrofluorescein, 2,4,5,7,4’-pentanitrofluorescein, 2,4,5,7,5’-pentanitrofluorescein, and 2,4,5,7-tetranitrofluorescein methyl ester, were studied. As reaction media, a binary solvent acetonitrile – dimethyl sulfoxide (96 : 4 by mass) was used. The acidity scale in this solvent was established previously. The indices of the dissociation constants of the dyes were determined using the spectrophotometric method. Interpreting the  values requires an understanding of the state of tautomeric equilibria. The behavior of these compounds differs significantly from that of other fluorescein dyes, e.g., halogen derivatives. In the case of the first three compounds, i.e., for dyes with a free carboxylic group, the lactonic structure is predominant not only for the neutral form, but even for the double-charged anion. The single-charged anionic form exists as an equilibrium mixture of a colored (and fluorescent) tautomer and an almost colorless lactone. The fourth compound with esterified carboxylic group exhibits extreme stability in its anionic form.  Evaluation of the tautomerization constants made it possible to calculate the microscopic equilibrium constants of the stepwise dissociation of dye lactones, k1L and k2L. The consideration of the difference (pk2L – pk1L) allowed estimating the effective relative permittivity of the space between the ionizing groups basing on the Bjerrum – Kirkwood – Westheimer equation. Tautomerism of anions was discussed from the point of view of stabilization of symmetric structures.

The dissociation constants of 45 substituted 1- and 2-naphthoic acids in six organic solvents (methanol, ethanol, acetonitrile, dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, pyridine) have been used to evaluate the substituent effects in the naphthalene skeleton. The dissociation constants data have been treated traditionally by using Dewar-Grisdale equation and the Taft DSP equation, and the alternative interpretation of substituent effects (AISE) method. Quantitative comparison of substituent effects and their transmission from different positions, combination of inductive and resonance effects from various positions, and effects of solvents are discussed. Best results are predominantly provided by the AISE. Substituent effects are stronger in the case of substituents affecting from ring of the naphthalene skeleton bearing carboxylic group than from ring not bearing carboxylic group, and there are no substantial differences between the individual positions of this ring. The contribution of resonance effects at 4α and 8β positions distinctly changes with the medium. Special quality of substituent H was found in comparison with other substituents presumably due their bulkier character. The principal component analysis (PCA) has been also applied to treat the mean dissociation constants using the single substituent property approach. The dissociation together with reactivity data for other naphthalene derivatives have been tested for comprehensive evaluation using PCA. There was found a large similarity of naphthalene reactivity data tested from the point of view of substituent effects.

Two 4-tolyl-1,2,4-triazol-1-ium methylids, namely 4-tolyl-1,2,4-triazol-1-ium-phenacylid and 4-tolyl-1,2,4-triazol-1-ium-4′-nitro-phenacylid, are studied from solvatochromic point of view in binary solvent mixtures of water with ethanol and water with methanol. The contributions (expressed in percent) of the universal and specific interactions are separated from the spectral shifts recorded in the visible range for each composition of the binary solvent mixture. The essential role of the orientation and induction interactions in the studied solutions was demonstrated. Based on the statistic cell model of the binary solvent mixture solutions, the difference between the formation energies of ylid-water and ylid-alcohol complexes is estimated. The composition of the ylid’s first solvation shell was also established using the model of the binary solvent mixture solutions. The results obtained from the statistical cell model were compared with those obtained by using the Suppan’s model, resulting a good agreement.

Previous work has shown that sensory pleasure is both the motor and the sign of optimal behaviors aimed at physiological ends. From an evolutionary psychology point of view it may be postulated that mental pleasure evolved from sensory pleasure. Accordingly, the present work tested empirically the hypothesis that pleasure signals efficacious mental activity. In Experiment 1, ten subjects played video-golf on a Macintosh computer. After each hole they were invited to rate their pleasure or displeasure on a magnitude estimation scale. Their ratings of pleasure correlated negatively with the difference par minus performance, i.e., the better the performance the greater the pleasure reported. In Experiments 2 and 3, the pleasure of reading poems was correlated with comprehension, both rated by two groups of subjects, science students and arts students. In the majority of science students pleasure was significantly correlated with comprehension. Only one arts student showed this relationship; this result suggests that the proposed relationship between pleasure and cognitive efficiency is not tautological. Globally, the results support the hypothesis that pleasure is aroused by the same mechanisms, and follows the same laws, in physiological and cognitive mental tasks and also leads to the optimization of performance.

The construction and selection of a suitable bijective function, that is, substitution, is now becoming an important applied task, particularly for building block encryption systems. Many articles have suggested using different approaches to determining the quality of substitution, but most of them are highly computationally complex. The solution of this problem will significantly expand the range of methods for constructing and analyzing scheme in information protection systems. The purpose of research is to find easily measurable characteristics of substitutions, allowing to evaluate their quality, and also measures of the proximity of a particular substitutions to a random one, or its distance from it. For this purpose, several characteristics were proposed in this work: difference and polynomial, and their mathematical expectation was found, as well as variance for the difference characteristic. This allows us to make a conclusion about its quality by comparing the result of calculating the characteristic for a particular substitution with the calculated mathematical expectation. From a computational point of view, the thesises of the article are of exceptional interest due to the simplicity of the algorithm for quantifying the quality of bijective function substitutions. By its nature, the operation of calculating the difference characteristic carries out a simple summation of integer terms in a fixed and small range. Such an operation, both in the modern and in the prospective element base, is embedded in the logic of a wide range of functional elements, especially when implementing computational actions in the optical range, or on other carriers related to the field of nanotechnology.

In the article, the author reflects the existing problems of the fight against corruption in the Russian Federation. He focuses on the opacity of the work of state bodies, leading to an increase in bribery and corruption. The topic we have chosen is socially exciting in our days, since its significance is growing on a large scale at all levels of the investigated aspect of our modern life. Democratic institutions are being jeopardized, the difference in the position of social strata of society in society’s access to material goods is growing, and the state of society is suffering from the moral point of view, citizens are losing confidence in the government, and in the top officials of the state.

The article discusses the problems of evolution and the formation of the ideology of an enlightened monarchy in Russia. In this regard, the philosophical and political ideas of Catherine the Great, as well as their theoretical and ideological premises, are analyzed. It is noted that the philosophy of education in Russia was closely connected with the concepts of Voltaire, Didro, Montesquieu, Beccaria, Bentham, their views on natural law and human freedom, humanism and the rule of law. These concepts in the philosophy of Catherine received a specific interpretation, due to the sociocultural conditions of Russia. This was manifested in the famous work of Catherine the Great “The Nakaz”, which recognized Montesquieu's argument in favor of the autocracy, but at the same time, his point of view on the separation of powers was rejected. The specificity of the doctrine of enlightened monarchy lies in the combination of liberal and conservative values, which form eclectic forms. This was the dialectic of the supreme power, the difference between the enlightened monarchy and the ideology of absolutism. The article also notes that education in Russia is associated with fundamental socio-political reforms, processes of secularization of culture. At this time, the natural and human sciences are developing. The changes positively influenced the development of medicine, beautification of towns and public education. Also considered are the views on the autocracy of the opposition nobility intelligentsia: A. N. Radishchev and noted that his criticism of the autocracy was determined by an alternative cultural policy, proceeding from the protection of the interests of the people. The doctrine of enlightened monarchy is characterized by internal worldview inconsistency and political inconsistency, which did not allow solving the pressing social problems of the establishment of legal state, democratization of society and the abolition of serfdom.

Dreyfus argues that there is a basic methodological difference between the natural sciences and the social sciences, a difference that derives from the different goals and practices of each. He goes on to argue that being a realist about natural entities is compatible with pluralism or, as he calls it, “plural realism.” If intelligibility is always grounded in our practices, Dreyfus points out, then there is no point of view from which one can ask about or provide an answer to the one true nature of ultimate reality. But that is consistent with believing that the natural sciences can still reveal the way the world is independent of our theories and practices.

We present our study on the recognition of hydrogen isotopes by an open-cage fullerene through determination of binding affinity of isotopes H 2 /HD/D 2 with the open-cage fullerene and comparison of their relative molecular sizes through kinetic-isotope-release experiments. We took advantage of isotope H 2 /D 2 exchange that generated an equilibrium mixture of H 2 /HD/D 2 in a stainless steel autoclave to conduct high-pressure hydrogen insertion into an open-cage fullerene. The equilibrium constants of three isotopes with the open-cage fullerene were determined at various pressures and temperatures. Our results show a higher equilibrium constant for HD into open-cage fullerene than the other two isotopomers, which is consistent with its dipolar nature. D 2 molecule generally binds stronger than H 2 because of its heavier mass; however, the affinity for H 2 becomes larger than D 2 at lower temperature, when size effect becomes dominant. We further investigated the kinetics of H 2 /HD/D 2 release from open-cage fullerene, proving their relative escaping rates. D 2 was found to be the smallest and H 2 the largest molecule. This notion has not only supported the observed inversion of relative binding affinities between H 2 and D 2 , but also demonstrated that comparison of size difference of single molecules through non-convalent kinetic-isotope effect was applicable.

AbstractWe present the results of a large-scale corpus-based comparison of two German event nominalization patterns: deverbal nouns in -ung (e.g., die Evaluierung, ‘the evaluation’) and nominal infinitives (e.g., das Evaluieren, ‘the evaluating’). Among the many available event nominalization patterns for German, we selected these two because they are both highly productive and challenging from the semantic point of view. Both patterns are known to keep a tight relation with the event denoted by the base verb, but with different nuances. Our study targets a better understanding of the differences in their semantic import. The key notion of our comparison is that of semantic transparency, and we propose a usage-based characterization of the relationship between derived nominals and their bases. Using methods from distributional semantics, we bring to bear two concrete measures of transparency which highlight different nuances: the first one, cosine, detects nominalizations which are semantically similar to their bases; the second one, distributional inclusion, detects nominalizations which are used in a subset of the contexts of the base verb. We find that only the inclusion measure helps in characterizing the difference between the two types of nominalizations, in relation with the traditionally considered variable of relative frequency (Hay, 2001). Finally, the distributional analysis allows us to frame our comparison in the broader coordinates of the inflection vs. derivation cline.
